Growing the Next Generation of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Researchers.

Hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) research is needed to improve care for the rapidly growing population of patients and caregivers affected by serious illness across the lifespan. Presently, multiple barriers hamper the advancement of HPM research, including limited scientific training opportunities, a relatively small pool of senior mentors, inconsistent access to institutional support, and scarce funding mechanisms to support increased numbers of early career investigators. Given this landscape, strategic investment in and guidance for the next generation of HPM researchers is critical t

Clean intermittent catheterization in boys using the LoFric catheter.

PURPOSE: We compared a recently developed hydrophilic catheter to the standard polyethylene catheter in regard to hematuria, infection and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hydrophilic LoFric or standard Mentor catheter was assigned at random to 17 and 16 boys, respectively, who were skilled in intermittent self-catheterization. They were evaluated by weekly urinalysis and a questionnaire. RESULTS: Significantly fewer episodes of microscopic hematuria occurred in the LoFric than Mentor catheter group (9 episodes in 6 subjects versus 19 episodes in 11, p < 0.05). There were also

Mentorship for the Future Special Care Dentist.

Mentorship and exposure to individuals with intellectual disabilities and special health care needs is typically limited in predoctoral dental training programs due to time restrictions created by the expansion of technology and scientific learning within the dental school curricula. In this article, the authors look at the benefits of creating mentorship programs; characteristics of good mentors and mentees; and examples of successful, unsuccessful, and future programs in order to create dental professionals who are equipped to address the oral health needs for these vulnerable populations.

A mixed methods evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-led physical activity behaviour change intervention for inactive people living with and beyond cancer.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural physical activity (PA) interventions have shown success among people living with and beyond cancer (LWBC). Intervention delivery typically involves qualified exercise professionals (QEP); however, peer mentors (i.e. active people LWBC) may enhance such interventions as they can provide practical and emotional support from their lived experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-delivered PA behaviour change intervention for inactive people LWBC. METHODS: Inactive people LWBC participated in a 6-week intervention infor

Evaluating the performance of a virtual platform 'T-BOM' for mentorship in tropical diseases research among early career scientists: Insights from a pilot in Nigeria and other resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Research mentorship plays a crucial role in advancing science. However, there are limited virtual platforms for cultivating mentorship among early career infectious diseases researchers in resource challenged settings. This study reports the findings from the utilization of a recently developed virtual mentorship platform, including its achievements, challenges and needs. METHODS: We developed a web-based application called Top-Bottom Open Mentorship (TBOM) freely accessible at www.tbommodel.com. The platform hosts mentors and allows mentees to send connection requests. In this pa

Modular training for residents with no prior experience with open pelvic surgery in endoscopic extraperitoneal radical prostatectomy.

PURPOSE: To establish a teaching program for the performance of endoscopic extraperitoneal radical prostatectomy (EERPE) that would ascertain the safe and efficacious training of residents with no previous experience with open pelvic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The technique of EERPE was divided in 12 segments with 5 levels of difficulty. We thus designed a training program, where the resident learned the procedure in a mentor-defined schedule. During each educational EERPE, the trainee only performed the operative steps corresponding to his acquired skill level. The mentor performed the

The effectiveness of a community-based intervention for parents with FASD.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Step by Step program in which mentors work with parents affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) on a one-to-one basis. Mentors help clients identify and work towards meeting their needs and achieving their goals. Data from 24 closed client files was collected and analyzed and as predicted, the program was effective in helping clients reduce their needs and achieve their goals. The clients' reason for leaving the program as well as whether or not they had a formal FASD diagnosis had an impact on their success in the p

Active vs passive haptic feedback technology in virtual reality arthroscopy simulation: Which is most realistic?

BACKGROUND: Virtual Reality (VR) simulators are playing an increasingly prominent role in orthopaedic training and education. Face-validity - the degree to which reality is accurately represented - underpins the value of a VR simulator as a learning tool for trainees. Despite the importance of tactile feedback in arthroscopy, there is a paucity for evidence regarding the role of haptics in VR arthroscopy simulator realism. PURPOSE: To assess the difference in face validity between two high fidelity VR simulators employing passive and active haptic feedback technology respectively. METHOD: 38

Implementation of peer support for families of children with CHD: leveraging the unique perspectives of leaders within patient/family organisations.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with CHD frequently experience psychological distress related to the chronic and unpredictable demands of their child's diagnosis. Peer support can mitigate distress and promote resilience, but few studies have explored factors affecting its implementation or the experiences of those who provide or facilitate peer support. This study aimed to identify barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for optimising peer support from the unique perspectives of leaders of patient/family organisations within the CHD community. METHODS: Using online crowdsourcing meth

Reconceptualizing Recovery After Concussion: A Phenomenological Exploration of College Student Experiences.

PURPOSE: Typical measures of recovery from concussion-such as symptom scales, neurocognitive testing, or exertion measures-may not capture individualized experiences of concussion. This report examines how college students with concussion interact with and consider their recovery. METHOD: Sixteen college students who sustained concussions while in college completed 40- to 75-min semistructured interviews. All were enrolling to become mentors in a peer mentoring program for students with concussion. Questions addressed experiences as a college student with concussion, life changes following co…
