Perchloroethylene: acute occupational poisoning and a proposal for its replacement with other less toxic substances.

Perchloroethylene is used mainly as a solvent in dry cleaning, cleaning of electrical equipment, and degreasing of metal parts. The authors report a case of acute poisoning with perchloroethylene contracted by a maintenance worker when cleaning an electric transformer. Since perchloroethylene may cause severe poisoning and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified it as a probable carcinogen for humans, the authors have revised the main substances that may replace perchloroethylene in the workplace. Med Pr. 2019;70(3):393-5.

Inappropriate shock delivery as a result of electromagnetic interference originating from the faulty electrical installation.

We present a case report of a 74-year-old male patient with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator who suffered an inappropriate defibrillation shock while bathing in the tub. Insight in the ICD stored electrogram episodes revealed electromagnetic interferences, with a typical 50 Hz electrical artifact mimicking fast ventricular tachycardia as a device misinterpreted. After this event, the maintenance workers investigated the electrical installation in the bathroom and revealed that there was voltage leaking between electrical installation and metal pipes. After the repair was completed wit

[New welding processes and health effects of welding].

This paper describes some of the recent developments in the control technology to enhance capability of Pulse Gas Metal Arc Welding. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) processing has been also considered. FSW is a new solid-state joining technique. Heat generated by friction at the rotating tool softens the material being welded. FSW can be considered a green and energy-efficient technique without deleterious fumes, gas, radiation, and noise. Application of new welding processes is limited and studies on health effects in exposed workers are lacking. Acute and chronic health effects of conventional w

A study of fatal injuries in Nigerian factories.

A study of the pattern of occupational injury mortality rates by industry and cause of death was undertaken to indicate the high-risk types of industry and the major causes of death, which could subsequently be used in developing cost-effective strategies for prevention. This is the first such study of accidental mortality factors in Nigerian factories. This paper reports the outcome of the study of mortality in Nigerian factories over a 10 year period (1987-1996). Between 1987 and 1996, a total of 3183 injuries were reported, of which 71 (2.2%) were fatal. The annual case fatality rate ranged

Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome following metal fume fever.

Metal fume fever (MFF) is an acute response to the inhalation of heavy metals used in industry. The patient typically experiences symptoms of cough, fever, chills, malaise, and myalgia that are self-limited and of short duration. Wheezing may occur and pulmonary function may be acutely impaired with a decrease in lung volumes and diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide. Nevertheless, respiratory function quickly returns to normal, and persistent pulmonary insufficiency is unusual. Irritant-induced asthma is a non-immunogenic form of airway injury that may be associated with industrial inhalation

Unilateral pseudogynecomastia: an occupational hazard in manual metal-pressing factories?

BACKGROUND: Five cases of unilateral occupation-related pseudogynecomastia are presented. All the patients in these cases worked in the same metal-pressing factory. METHODS: One patient with grade 4 unilateral gynecomastia in the right breast presented to the authors' outpatient department asking persistently for surgery. He also reported that all his male colleagues working in the same business (a total of 5) had different degrees of unilateral gynecomastia. Their line of work involved holding a long round rod under the axilla and then pressing the distal end of it firmly against a spinning

The importance of monitoring endocrine-disrupting chemicals and essential elements in biological samples of fertilizer industry workers.

Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can lead to adverse health effects, including immune and endocrine system disruption, respiratory problems, metabolic issues, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, growth impairment, neurological and learning disabilities, and cancer. Fertilizers, which contain varying levels of heavy metals, are known to pose a significant risk to human health, especially for those residing or working near fertilizer industries. This study aimed to investigate the levels of toxic elements in biological samples of individuals working in a fertilizer indus

Occupational patterns of opioid-related harms comparing a cohort of formerly injured workers to the general population in Ontario, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: The role of work-related injuries as a risk factor for opioid-related harms has been hypothesized, but little data exist to support this relationship. The objective was to compare the incidence of opioid-related harms among a cohort of formerly injured workers to the general population in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: Workers' compensation claimants (1983-2019) were linked to emergency department (ED) and hospitalization records (2006-2020). Incident rates of opioid-related poisonings and mental and behavioural disorders were estimated among 1.7 million workers and in the general popu

Rheumatism in foundry workers.

In order to investigate loss of work from rheumatic diseases in the metal trades, employees in 10 foundries were questioned. Of 325 foundry workers aged 35 to 74 years, who had worked for at least 10 years on the foundry floor, 299 were examined clinically and radiologically for evidence of rheumatic disease. Radiographs of the hands, knees, and dorsal and lumbar spine were taken as a routine, and the pelvis was included in those aged 45 and over. A comparison was made with a control series of radiographs, from men, matched for age, in a random population sample examined earlier in the town of

Effects of welding fumes on haematological parameters of male albino rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Welders or metal workers not being an exception are exposed to metals ions or oxides (fumes) at trace concentrations either through direct contact supplementation at occupational sites or indirectly through uptake from contaminated food, water or contaminated soil, dust, or air. The study aims to determine the effects of welding fumes exposure on haematological parameters in blood of experimental animals. The fumes were collected from welding sites during the activity by a skilled welder. 130 male experimental animals were utilized and made into 13 groups. 12 groups were given dosages calculat…

Severe noise-induced deafness--a 10-year review of cases.

Noise Induced Deafness (NID) is the leading occupational disease in Singapore. Every year, over 500 new cases of NID are detected by the Department of Industrial Health (DIH). Severe NID is a disabling disease which is compensable under the law. A retrospective study was conducted to elicit the profile of workers with severe, disabling NID. From 1 January 1985 to 31 December 1994, the DIH confirmed 127 of such cases. Of these, 57 (44.9%) were involved in the building and repair of ships and boats, 30 (23.6%) with the basic steel industries, manufacture and fabrication of metal products and sto

Exposure-Associated Metabolic Changes in Electronic-Waste Recycling Workers: An Exploratory Untargeted Metabolomics Study.

Electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling is an important source of occupational exposure to complex mixtures of heavy metals, yet the broader metabolic consequences remain insufficiently characterized. Untargeted metabolomics provides a hypothesis-generating approach for identifying systemic biochemical alterations associated with such exposure. A cross-sectional serum metabolomics study was performed using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) in negative electrospray ionization mode, including 30 e-waste recycling workers and 46 non-exposed controls. Integration of laboratory and epidemiologic studies to evaluate genotoxic exposure in tool and die workers.

In summary, the data presented here provides perspective on the analysis of cancer in a relatively small population of tool and die workers. Each part of the effort establishes evidence for or against the presence of a workplace carcinogenic effect. Overall, the weight of evidence leads to the hypothesis that cutting fluids are a likely candidate for observed increases in urinary system cancer and perhaps other sites. Because cutting fluids and a wide variety of metals are used together, the interaction of these entities need be considered in the overall process of carcinogenesis in the workpl

The influence of pH on the in vitro permeation of rhodium through human skin.

Workers in precious metals refineries are at risk of exposure to salt compounds of the platinum group metals through inhalation, as well as through the skin. Rhodium salt permeation through the skin has previously been proven using rhodium trichloride (RhCl3) dissolved in synthetic sweat at a pH of 6.5. However, the skin surface pH of refinery workers may be lower than 6.5. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of pH 6.5 and 4.5 on the in vitro permeation of rhodium through intact Caucasian skin using Franz diffusion cells. A concentration of 0.3 mg mL-1 rhodium was used and a

Laboratory evaluation of a field-portable sealed source X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for determination of metals in air filter samples.

Recent advances in field-portable X-ray fluorescence (FP XRF) spectrometer technology have made it a potentially valuable screening tool for the industrial hygienist to estimate worker exposures to airborne metals. Although recent studies have shown that FP XRF technology may be better suited for qualitative or semiquantitative analysis of airborne lead in the workplace, these studies have not extensively addressed its ability to measure other elements. This study involved a laboratory-based evaluation of a representative model FP XRF spectrometer to measure elements commonly encountered in wo
