We report the histological findings seen in the lymph nodes draining the sites of large joint prostheses. Two patients underwent multiple prosthetic joint replacements. In one patient, the regional lymph nodes were enlarged during the revision of a total hip prosthesis, and a representative lymph node was resected. The other patient had undergone a pelvic lymph node dissection as part of a staging procedure for prostatic carcinoma. Human bone and cartilage specimens were evaluated for acid and alkaline phosphatase localization following varying fixation periods for fresh or frozen tissue. Formalin fixations of up to 183 hr were followed by embedment in methyl methacrylate; frozen tissue was examined either without fixation or following fixation for up to 1 hr and subsequent glycol or methyl methacrylate embedding. Permanent arterial occlusion can be obtained experimentally by using plastic micro-spheres, polymerising materials (Histo-Acryl, Paladur) and direct current thrombosis. Certain limitations in their use arise from the properties of the substances. In our experience, plastic microspheres are not suitable for blocking entire organs or large vascular territories. They are more appropriate for occlusion of individual, small vessels by super-selective injections. Sole use of polymerising materials is not possible; they are best used in combination with other techniques (magnets, balloon catheters).

Cement discoplasty has been developed to treat patients with advanced intervertebral disc degeneration. In discoplasty, poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is injected into the disc, leading to reduced pain and certain spinal alignment correction. The difference of radiation dose reduction effect with spacers of different materials, a heat-curing denture base resin and a silicon impression material, was examined experimentally and clinically. Radium needles and iridium hairpins were used as radioactive sources. In both studies, it was revealed that a dose reduction effect of silicon impression material was greater than that of denture base resin. Silicon impression material was thought to be a better material for spacers because of its larger radiation dose reduction effect and the time saving to produce the spacer.
