Phasic and tonic coupling between EEG and EMG demonstrated with independent component analysis.

The authors describe a method for demonstrating the tonic and phasic couplings between suitably time-aligned surface eletromyographs (sEMGs) and the simultaneously recorded EEGs. The method, based on independent component analysis, was applied to data recorded from two normal subjects performing sustained submaximal contractions or continual repetitive movements of the arm. Augmented datasets, consisting of the EEG and either the sEMG from a single muscle (subject 1) or a combination of sEMGs from several muscles (subject 2), were analyzed with independent component analysis to determine the E

A deterministic partial differential equation model for dose calculation in electron radiotherapy.

High-energy ionizing radiation is a prominent modality for the treatment of many cancers. The approaches to electron dose calculation can be categorized into semi-empirical models (e.g. Fermi-Eyges, convolution-superposition) and probabilistic methods (e.g.Monte Carlo). A third approach to dose calculation has only recently attracted attention in the medical physics community. This approach is based on the deterministic kinetic equations of radiative transfer. We derive a macroscopic partial differential equation model for electron transport in tissue. This model involves an angular closure in

Bayesian Predictive Inference for Future Order Statistics from the Two-Parameter Lomax Distribution under Type-II Censoring.

This study develops Bayesian predictive procedures for future order statistics from the two-parameter Lomax distribution under Type-II censored sampling schemes. The proposed framework combines predictive likelihood inference with Bayesian prediction based on independent gamma priors and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Bayesian point predictors are derived under the squared error, LINEX, and general entropy loss functions, and predictive intervals are constructed from posterior predictive samples. A detailed Monte Carlo simulation study compa

Frequentist and Bayesian Predictive Inference for the Log-Logistic Distribution Under Progressive Type-II Censoring.

This paper investigates the prediction of unobserved future failure times for the heavy-tailed Log-Logistic distribution under Progressive Type-II censoring. We first develop point and interval estimates for the unknown parameters using both frequentist maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches. For predicting future failures, we derive three distinct point predictors: the Best Unbiased Predictor (BUP), the Conditional Median Predictor (CMP), and the Bayesian Predictor (BP). Corresponding prediction intervals are constructed using frequentist pivotal quantities, Bayesian Equal-Tailed Interval

Experimental Validation and Calibration of Cherenkov Imaging for Real-Time Surface Dosimetry in Photon Breast Therapy.

Cherenkov imaging holds promise as a non-invasive, real-time method for surface dosimetry during photon-based external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of using Cherenkov emission as a quantitative surrogate for surface dose in breast cancer treatment through Monte Carlo simulation and experimental validation. A Monte Carlo model was developed to simulate both dose deposition and corresponding Cherenkov photon emission for breast patients undergoing photon EBRT. Validation was performed using phantoms with homogeneous optical properties and varying geo

Tensor-Network Markov-Chain Monte Carlo: Efficient Sampling of Three-Dimensional Spin Glasses.

Sampling equilibrium configurations of three-dimensional (3D) spin glasses with quenched disorder remains a fundamental challenge in statistical physics. The rugged energy landscape, pronounced critical slowing down, and intrinsic ergodicity breaking render standard Monte Carlo methods severely inefficient, particularly for large systems at low temperatures. In this Letter, we introduce the tensor-network Markov-chain Monte Carlo (TNMCMC) approach to address the issue. By formulating large-scale collective updates via tensor-network contractions on 2D lattice slices, TNMCMC yields unbiased sam

Analysis of lesion detectability in Bayesian emission reconstruction with nonstationary object variability.

Bayesian methods based on the maximum a posteriori principle (also called penalized maximum-likelihood methods) have been developed to improve image quality in emission tomography. To explore the full potential of Bayesian reconstruction for lesion detection, we derive simplified theoretical expressions that allow fast evaluation of the detectability of a lesion in Bayesian reconstruction. This work is builded on the recent progress on the theoretical analysis of image properties of statistical reconstructions and the development of numerical observers. We explicitly model the nonstationary va

GMCT : a Monte Carlo simulation package for macromolecular receptors.

Generalized Monte Carlo titration (GMCT) is a versatile suite of computer programs for the efficient simulation of complex macromolecular receptor systems as for example proteins. The computational model of the system is based on a microstate description of the receptor and an average description of its surroundings in terms of chemical potentials. The receptor can be modeled in great detail including conformational flexibility and many binding sites with multiple different forms that can bind different ligand types. Membrane embedded systems can be modeled including electrochemical potential

Optimization of 99mTc-SPECT in the presence of 90Y for radioembolization.

BACKGROUND: 99mTc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA) imaging is part of the standard work-up procedure for radioembolization using 90Y microspheres. In certain scenarios, it may be warranted to visualize the distribution of 99mTc in co-presence of 90Y, for example when validating intra-procedural 99mTc-MAA imaging after 90Y-therapy to enable single-session radioembolization. Another instance involves additional 99mTc-MAA administration during the therapeutic procedure itself, e.g. when initial imaging reveals insufficient targeting of a specific liver segment. In these situations, crosstalk from 90

Influence of lung physical density on dose calculation in boron neutron capture therapy for malignant pleural mesothelioma.

The boron neutron capture therapy treatment planning systems such as SERA and TSUKUBA Plan, which are mainly based on the Monte Carlo method, require the lung physical density and composition of the tissue for the dose calculation. However, the physical density and composition of lungs may change because of diseases such as pneumonia and emphysema. We investigated the effect of the lung physical density on the neutron flux distribution and dose for the lung and tumor.

FasNet: a hybrid deep learning model with attention mechanisms and uncertainty estimation for liver tumor segmentation on LiTS17.

Liver cancer, especially hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), remains one of the most fatal cancers globally, emphasizing the critical need for accurate tumor segmentation to enable timely diagnosis and effective treatment planning. Traditional imaging techniques, such as CT and MRI, rely on manual interpretation, which can be both time-intensive and subject to variability. This study introduces FasNet, an innovative hybrid deep learning model that combines ResNet-50 and VGG-16 architectures, incorporating Channel and Spatial Attention mechanisms alongside Monte Carlo Dropout to improve segmentatio

A Monte Carlo analysis of breast screening randomized trials.

PURPOSE: To analyze breast screening randomized trials with a Monte Carlo simulation tool. METHODS: A simulation tool previously developed to simulate breast screening programmes was adapted for that purpose. The history of women participating in the trials was simulated, including a model for survival after local treatment of invasive cancers. Distributions of time gained due to screening detection against symptomatic detection and the overall screening sensitivity were used as inputs. Several randomized controlled trials were simulated. Except for the age range of women involved, all simula

Development of a scatter correction technique for planar 99mTc-MAA imaging to improve accuracy in lung shunt fraction estimation.

PURPOSE: Prior to 90Y selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) treatment, 99mTc-MAA scintigraphy imaging is used in the estimation of the lung shunt fraction (LSF). Planar imaging is recommended for determining a LSF ratio. However, the estimate may be affected by scatter contributions, attenuation and respiratory motion. The objective of this study was to correct for the effects of scatter in the LSF, towards the determination of a more accurate estimation method of LSF derived from planar scintigraphy imaging, which is recommended by international guidelines. METHODS: The open access SIM

Method to Compute the Solute-Solvent Dispersion Contribution to the Electronic Excitation Energy in Solution.

A method formulated within the polarizable continuum model of the solvent and a quantum Monte Carlo treatment of the electronic states of the solute molecule is presented for the calculation of the solute-solvent dispersion contribution to the electronic excitation energy in solution. Variational quantum Monte Carlo is exploited to measure the fluctuations of the electronic electric field of the solute molecule to compute the London's dispersion forces with the solvent. The method previously applied to the ground state of the solute is here extended to excited states. To perform the Casimir-Po

Sampling Quantum States with Inequality Constraints.

Random samples of quantum states with specific properties are useful for various applications, such as Monte Carlo integration over the state space. In the high-dimensional situations that one already encounters when working with a few qubits, the quantum state space has a very complicated boundary, and it is challenging to incorporate the specific properties into the sampling algorithm. In this paper, we present the Sequentially Constrained Monte Carlo (SCMC) algorithm as a practical and versatile method for sampling quantum states in accordance with properties that can be stated as inequalit

Bayesian estimation of the inverse Exponential Power distribution for COVID-19 case fatality analysis under SDG 3.

In this study, the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and Bayes estimators for the shape and scale parameters of Inverse Exponential Power (IEP) distribution are derived. As closed-form solutions for the Bayes estimators are not available, approximate estimators are obtained through Lindley's and Tierney-Kadane's approximation methods, along with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, under the squared-error loss (SEL) function. Also, the approximate Bayes estimates are evaluated against the maximum likelihood estimates based on mean square error (MSE) and bias values using Monte Carlo

Computational analysis to identify key factors governing drug encapsulation of cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials formed by metal ions and organic ligands. MOFs are promising candidates for Drug Delivery Systems (DDS) because of their high porosity and tunable pore properties. Cyclodextrin-based MOFs (CD-MOFs) have gained attention as biocompatible MOFs for drug-delivery applications. This study investigates the encapsulation behavior of drug molecules in γ-CD-MOFs through computational simulations. The chemical potential of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) was calculated as - 40.13 kJ/mol using the Widom insertion method within the canonical Monte Carlo (CMC) simu

Highly Efficient Discovery of 3D Mechanical Metamaterials via Monte Carlo Tree Search.

Machine learning (ML) has surpassed traditional intuition-driven trial-and-error approaches in metamaterial design by employing efficient inverse pipelines based on structure-property mapping. However, three critical challenges impede the applications of ML when extending the geometry from 2D to 3D: exponentially increasing design space dimensionality, scarce high-quality training data, and excessive computational demands. To address these problems, Monte Carlo Tree Search-Active Learning (MCTS-AL), an active learning framework integrating Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), convolutional neural n

Fitting a linear-linear piecewise growth mixture model with unknown knots: A comparison of two common approaches to inference.

A linear-linear piecewise growth mixture model (PGMM) is appropriate for analyzing segmented (disjointed) change in individual behavior over time, where the data come from a mixture of 2 or more latent classes, and the underlying growth trajectories in the different segments of the developmental process within each latent class are linear. A PGMM allows the knot (change point), the time of transition from 1 phase (segment) to another, to be estimated (when it is not known a priori) along with the other model parameters. To assist researchers in deciding which estimation method is most advantag
