Impact of Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti on dengue incidence in endemic regions: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dengue remains a major public health challenge in endemic regions, and conventional vector-control strategies have shown limited long-term effectiveness. The release of Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes has emerged as a novel biocontrol strategy to reduce dengue transmission. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of Wolbachia deployments in reducing dengue incidence. We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library until 30 April 2025 for randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies conducted in dengue-endemic settings. Po

Comparison of Oviposition and Adult Trapping to Monitor wMel Introgression for Wolbachia-Based Vector Control.

Wolbachia introgression into Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) mosquito populations is an effective strategy for preventing dengue and is currently under evaluation for WHO prequalification. The standard protocol for trials and deployments currently being conducted in Brazil by the World Mosquito Program (WMP) for long-term monitoring of Wolbachia introgression involves the use of BG-Sentinel traps (BG-traps; Biogents AG [Regensburg, Germany]), which are labor-intensive and costly. More affordable alternatives, such as oviposition traps (ovitraps), have been used in other settings; however, a compar

Taking the 'I' out of LLINs: using insecticides in vector control tools other than long-lasting nets to fight malaria.

Long-lasting insecticidal nets, or LLINs, have significantly reduced malaria morbidity and mortality over the past two decades. The net provides a physical barrier that decreases human-mosquito contact and the impregnated insecticide kills susceptible mosquito vectors upon contact and may repel them. However, the future of LLINs is threatened as resistance to pyrethroids is now widespread, the chemical arsenal for LLINs is very limited, time from discovery of next-generation insecticides to market is long, and persistent transmission is frequently caused by vector populations avoiding contact

A novel approach to determine mosquito trap placement for West Nile virus surveillance.

The rapid spread of West Nile virus (WNV) is a growing concern. With no vaccines or specific medications available, prevention through mosquito control is the only solution to curb the spread. Mosquito traps, used to detect viral presence in mosquito populations, are essential tools for WNV surveillance. But how do we decide where to place a mosquito trap? And what makes a good trap location, anyway? We present a robust statistical approach to determine a mosquito trap's ability to predict human WNV cases in the Chicago metropolitan area and its suburbs. We then use this value to detect the la…

Infection of highly insecticide-resistant malaria vector Anopheles coluzzii with entomopathogenic bacteria Chromobacterium violaceum reduces its survival, blood feeding propensity and fecundity.

BACKGROUND: This is now a concern that malaria eradication will not be achieved without the introduction of novel control tools. Microbiological control might be able to make a greater contribution to vector control in the future. The interactions between bacteria and mosquito make mosquito microbiota really promising from a disease control perspective. Here, the impact of Chromobacterium violaceum infections, isolated from both larvae and adult of wild-caught Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes in Burkina Faso, was evaluated on mosquito survival, blood feeding and fecundity. METHODS: To

High sensitivity of one-step real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR to detect low virus titers in large mosquito pools.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals in the world. Their ability to carry and spread diseases to humans causes millions of deaths every year. Due to the lack of efficient vaccines, the control of mosquito-borne diseases primarily relies on the management of the vector. Traditional control methods are insufficient to control mosquito populations. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is an additional control method that can be combined with other control tactics to suppress specific mosquito populations. The SIT requires the mass-rearing and release of sterile males with the aim to ind

Perceptions and practices of mosquito-borne diseases in Alabama - is concern where it should be?

BACKGROUND: The Gulf Coast of the United States is home to mosquito vectors that may spread disease causing pathogens, and environmental conditions that are ideal for the sustained transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens. Understanding public perceptions of mosquito-borne diseases and mosquito prevention strategies is critical for the development of effective vector control strategies and public health interventions. Here, we present a survey conducted in Mobile, Alabama along the Gulf Coast to better understand public perceptions of mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito control activities, and p…

Mosquitoes and Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Vietnam.

Mosquito-borne diseases pose a significant threat to humans in almost every part of the world. Key factors such as global warming, climatic conditions, rapid urbanisation, frequent human relocation, and widespread deforestation significantly increase the number of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases in Vietnam, and elsewhere around the world. In southeast Asia, and notably in Vietnam, national mosquito control programmes contribute to reducing the risk of mosquito-borne disease transmission, however, malaria and dengue remain a threat to public health. The aim of our review is to provide a …

Systematic review of Aedes aegypti control trials suggests publication bias related to author disclosure of conflicts of interest.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, resulting in a large global disease burden. Vector control remains the key strategy to prevent transmission due to the absence of widely available vaccines or treatments. Many studies evaluate control approaches, yet only a subset are published in peer-reviewed journals. One potential contributor to selective reporting, or publication bias, could be a conflict of interest (COI), defined as employment by a for-profit company conducting the trial, or a financial interest tie

Less is more: modelling the impact of species-targeted versus broadcast larviciding in Anopheles funestus-dominated malaria transmission settings.

BACKGROUND: Larval source management (LSM) was once central to malaria control before insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying dominated. Renewed interest in LSM raises questions about its effectiveness in rural Africa, where habitats are dispersed, and vector species contribute unequally, and whether species-targeted larviciding could offer greater gains than broadcast approaches. METHODS: This modelling study quantified the potential impact of larviciding in African settings where multiple vector species contribute unequally to malaria transmission. We modeled malaria transmiss

A mycelium-based carbon dioxide source for trapping vector mosquitoes.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a key activator and attractant for mosquitoes during host-seeking and is routinely used to bait traps. However, deploying CO2 via dry ice, compressed gas, sugar-yeast reactions, or carbonate-acid systems can be expensive, short-lived, and labor-intensive. We evaluated the effectiveness of a commercially available, mycelium-based CO2 source (ExHale bag) for attracting mosquitoes to passive and active traps. Originally developed for greenhouse use, the ExHale bag provides sustained CO2 release for up to 6 mo. Under semi-field conditions, we compared Biogents gravid Aedes

Are they there, how many, and how big? Investigating potential trap biases in the surveillance of La Crosse virus vectors.

Several methods of mosquito collection are used for the surveillance of the primary La Crosse virus (LACV) vectors, Aedes triseriatus (Say, 1823), Ae. albopictus (Skuse, 1895), and Ae. japonicus (Theobald, 1901). However, little is known about how the choice of collection method may confound inferences made from LACV vector surveillance data. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate potential biases in the surveillance of LACV vectors using the Biogents BG-Sentinel 2 (BGS), CDC-Light Trap (CDC-LT), Biogents Gravid Aedes Trap (BG-GAT), and standard oviposition cup (ovicup). Larval source management in Ethiopia: modelling to assess its effectiveness in curbing malaria surge in dire Dawa and Batu Towns.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia faces several severe challenges in terms of malaria elimination, including drug resistance and diagnostic evasion in the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, insecticide resistance in the primary Anopheles malaria vector, and, most recently, the invasion of the Asian malaria vector Anopheles stephensi. Novel malaria control methods are therefore needed, and in this paper, we describe the evaluation of a larval source management (LSM) strategy implemented in response to An. stephensi. The primary outcome was the malaria incidence rate compared between intervention and non-interv
