Chromatic induction and retinal image motion.

As the eyes drift across a scene, borders between surfaces slide across the retina. Consequently, near borders' edges, parts of the retina that have adapted to the light at one side of the border are exposed to the light at the other side of the border. Such changes in exposure might increase the judged contrast. Retinal image motion might therefore contribute to chromatic induction, the influence that adjacent colours have on a surface's apparent colour, by increasing the apparent colour contrast. We conducted two experiments to evaluate this possibility. The experiments examined how artifici…

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame; yet it remains unclear which reference frame guides perception. A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) i…

Implied gravity promotes coherent motion perception.

Gravity, a constant in Earth's environment, constrains not only physical motion but also our estimation of motion trajectories. Early studies show that natural gravitational acceleration facilitates the manual interception of free-falling objects. However, whether implied gravity affects the perception of coherent motion patterns from local motion cues remains poorly understood. Here, we designed a motion coherence threshold task to measure the visual discrimination of coherent global motion with natural (1 g) and reversed (-1 g) gravitational accelerations. Across five experiments, we showed …

[Relative Motion Splinting: Indications and Results].

Relative motion splinting is a simple way to reduce tension on extensor and flexor tendons after an injury or surgery. The affected finger is placed in increased extension (relative motion extension splint, RMES) or flexion (relative motion flexion splint, RMFS) relative to the neighbouring fingers, allowing for active tendon gliding within a protected range of motion at the site of repair or injury. While originally introduced for the treatment of extensor tendon injuries, the concept of relative motion splinting is now being used for a growing number of indications. It is characterised by a …

Motion sickness and cybersickness - Sensory mismatch.

The use of virtual reality (VR) with head-mounted displays (HMD) may cause side effects called cybersickness with symptoms comparable to those of motion sickness. In this study, we explored whether individual balance characteristics and self-reported tendency to motion sickness could be related to cybersickness vulnerability. Healthy young people (N = 45) were exposed to a VR application with HMD for four minutes, standing with no support. Balance characteristics were measured before (Sensory orientation test) and during (balance platform) the VR exposure. Symptoms of cybersickness were record…

Motion perception in central field loss.

Motion information is essential in daily life because it provides cues to depth, timing, object identification, and self-motion, as well as input to the oculomotor system. As the peripheral visual field is exquisitely sensitive to motion, we investigated the periphery of individuals with central visual field loss (CFL) to determine whether speed and direction discrimination are intact in this population. We compared CFL participants' (N = 8), older (N = 6), and young controls' (N = 6) ability to discriminate motion speed and direction in a two-spatial-alternative forced-choice design. Particip…

Stationary entangled radiation from micromechanical motion.

Mechanical systems facilitate the development of a hybrid quantum technology comprising electrical, optical, atomic and acoustic degrees of … ueezing the joint field operators of two thermal modes by 3.40 decibels below the vacuum level. The motion of this micromechanical system correlates up to 50 photons per second per hertz, giving rise to a quantum discord that is robust with respect to microwave noise7. Such generalized quantum correlations of separable states are important for quantum-en …

Motion characteristics of human roller skating.

In order to achieve a high speed of skating robot based on the leg structure - with passive wheels on even ground - the motion characteristics of human roller skating are studied in this paper. Utilizing a three dimensional motion capture system, the linear and turning gait are analyzed to express the motion characteristics of human roller skating. According to the observation and analysis, the normal linear gait can be divided into four phases and normal turning can be divided into three phases. The spin angle between the sagittal plane and the roller skate of the supporting leg is mainly gen…

Drug-Induced Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion.

Vocal cord dysfunction, also known as paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM), is a disorder characterized by abnormal vocal cord adduction during inspiration. PVFM is commonly misdiagnosed as asthma because of the similarity of symptoms: cough, wheezing, chest pain, and dyspnea. We present the clinical vignette of a 36-year-old woman with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and multiple adverse drug reactions who presented with recurrent episodes of unrecognized PVFM during skin testing for drug allergy, omalizumab treatment, and tocilizumab desensitization. Before the diagnosis of PVFM, these episode…

Wrist motion analysis in scaphoid nonunion.

INTRODUCTION: The motion of human wrist is a complex and multidirectional process. The aim of this study was to develop a reliable and practicable method to measure motion impairment of the wrist in patients who incurred a scaphoid nonunion. A scaphoid nonunion in computed tomography as well as the consent in this study was required. METHODS: A total of nine patients with unilateral scaphoid nonunion accomplished maximal circumferential wrist movements. The wrist movements were measured with an electrogoniometer (Biometrics Ltd.). To quantify maximal wrist motion we constructed the maximal bo…

Auditory motion processing after early blindness.

Studies showing that occipital cortex responds to auditory and tactile stimuli after early blindness are often interpreted as demonstrating that early blind subjects "see" auditory and tactile stimuli. However, it is not clear whether these occipital responses directly mediate the perception of auditory/tactile stimuli, or simply modulate or augment responses within other sensory areas. We used fMRI pattern classification to categorize the perceived direction of motion for both coherent and ambiguous auditory motion stimuli. In sighted individuals, perceived motion direction was accurately cat…

Motion sickness prevalence in school children.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of motion sickness in schoolchildren and related the finding to the postural balance and quality of life. A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out with 831 children aged 7 to 12 years. The frequency of motion sickness was evaluated based on the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire-Short (MSSQ-short). Postural balance was assessed using the Romberg test under different sensory conditions. The Dizziness Handicap Inventory was used in order to assess the quality of life. The statistical analyses were performed using …

Neural correlates of visual motion prediction.

Predicting the trajectories of moving objects in our surroundings is important for many life scenarios, such as driving, walking, reaching, hunting and combat. We determined human subjects' performance and task-related brain activity in a motion trajectory prediction task. The task required spatial and motion working memory as well as the ability to extrapolate motion information in time to predict future object locations. We showed that the neural circuits associated with motion prediction included frontal, parietal and insular cortex, as well as the thalamus and the visual cortex. Interestin…

Motion preservation in cervical spine: review.

Cervical disc replacement is an innovative technology that preserves motion at the instrumented level and has evolved as a potential alternative to spinal fusion for the treatment of cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy. Despite the excellent results of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, arthroplasty allows for motion preservation which may be beneficial. Although the initial and midterm results from the randomized clinical trials demonstrated safety and equivalent clinical success as compared to anterior cervical fusion; the evidence establishing the superiority of arthroplasty over fu…

Motion sickness: a cholinomimetic agent hypothesis.

Motion sickness has been defined as a set of physiological signs and symptoms produced as a result of prolonged sensory conflict in central nervous system vestibular centers. It has long been noted that the particular pattern of motion sickness signs and symptoms does not fit the conventional "fight or flight vs. rest and digest" autonomic synergy. We argue that most of the progression of symptoms is consistent with a new etiologic hypothesis: that an as-yet-unidentified ganglionic cholinomimetic agent is slowly released in proportion to sensory conflict. The agent accumulates systemically and…

Disruption of MT impairs motion processing.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have associated motion processing with cortical region MT+, which includes sub-region MT that preferentially processes motion in the contralateral visual field. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to temporarily disrupt MT+ which impaired motion perception, suggesting this region is necessary for motion processing. In the present study, we used fMRI guided TMS to disrupt MT and determine whether this sub-region is necessary for motion processing. On an individual participant basis, MT was localized in each hemisphere using …
