Overt naming in aphasia studied with a functional MRI hemodynamic delay design.

The purpose of this study was to develop a functional MRI method to examine overt speech in stroke patients with aphasia. An fMRI block design for overt picture naming was utilized which took advantage of the hemodynamic response delay where increased blood flow remains for 4-8 s after the task [(Friston, K.J., Jezzard, P., Turner, R., 1994. Analysis of functional MRI time-series. Hum. Brain Mapp. 1, 153-171)]. This allowed task-related information to be obtained after the task, minimizing motion artifact from overt speech (Eden, G.F., Joseph, J., Brown, H.E., Brown, C.P., Zeffiro, T.A., 1999.

Improving the design of AAC displays: preliminary study of the effects of targeted motion and decluttering on visual attention and symbol learning by individuals with Down syndrome.

This study investigates the effects of targeted motion (i.e., smooth movement of a selected AAC symbol from its location to the center of the display) and decluttering of the AAC display on visual fixation duration and accuracy of symbol identification by participants with Down syndrome across three sessions. In each session, participants were first asked to find a target symbol in a grid display with and without targeted motion of selected symbols; data on their visual fixation duration were collected using the Tobii Spectrum Pro. Then they were asked to identify target picture symbols from a

Connectivity of the precuneus-posterior cingulate cortex with the anterior cingulate cortex-medial prefrontal cortex differs consistently between control subjects and first-episode psychosis patients during a movie stimulus.

BACKGROUND: Functional connectivity is altered in psychotic disorders. Multiple findings concentrate on the default mode network, anchored on the precuneus-posterior cingulate cortex (PC-PCC). However, the nature of the alterations varies between studies and connectivity alterations have not been studied during an ecologically valid natural stimulus. In the present study, we investigated the functional and structural connectivity of a PC-PCC region, where functioning differentiated first-episode psychosis patients from control subjects during free viewing of a movie in our earlier study. An fMRI study of the reverse perspective illusion.

"Reverse perspective" is a powerful visual illusion similar to the hollow mask illusion, but more interesting in producing the perception of an illusory motion in a stationary picture. It is caused by conflict between motion parallax and pictorial depth cues in 3D "relief" paintings built with depth inversion. Here we report the measurement of brain activation using fMRI in response to a reverse perspective (RP) object, as well as a normal perspective, 3D-relief object ("shadow-box", SB) and a 2D painting of the same architectural scene. The stimuli were presented to 10 subjects in static and

Haptic contents of a movie dynamically engage the spectator's sensorimotor cortex.

Observation of another person's actions and feelings activates brain areas that support similar functions in the observer, thereby facilitating inferences about the other's mental and bodily states. In real life, events eliciting this kind of vicarious brain activations are intermingled with other complex, ever-changing stimuli in the environment. One practical approach to study the neural underpinnings of real-life vicarious perception is to image brain activity during movie viewing. Here the goal was to find out how observed haptic events in a silent movie would affect the spectator's sensor

Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder.

Adhesive capsulitis is characterized by painful, gradual loss of active and passive shoulder motion resulting from fibrosis and contracture of the joint capsule. Other shoulder pathology can produce a similar clinical picture, however, and must be considered. Management is based on the underlying cause of pain and stiffness, and determination of the etiology is essential. Subtle clues in the history and physical examination can help differentiate adhesive capsulitis from other conditions that cause a stiff, painful shoulder. The natural history of adhesive capsulitis is a matter of controversy

Gaze behavior during closed-captioned movie viewing adapts to absent audio through more frequent switching between text and scene.

Closed captions, originally for hearing-impaired audiences, are now increasingly used, adding an additional visual element to the multisensory experience of movie viewing. This study examines how gaze behavior adapts to the absence of auditory information by testing whether increased caption engagement reflects more frequent switching between closed captions and the visual scene, longer uninterrupted reading intervals, or both. Using eye-tracking, we analyzed saccades and fixations in designated areas of interest as participants viewed a 20-minute movie with alternating presence and absence of

Assessing the Impact of a Community-Based Narrative Film about Diabetes and Homelessness.

Stigma prevents societal acceptance, reinforces social inequities, and greatly complicates the management of diabetes for those dealing with homelessness. Various forms of media, such as film, can educate audiences and play a role in reducing stigma, but the effectiveness of such interventions in changing individuals' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs (KAB) requires further exploration. This study assessed the impact of a film on diabetes and homelessness through pre- and post-surveys of audience members (n = 202) at 12 screening events. The surveys measured changes in KAB through Likert scale

Neural divergence between individuals with and without minor depression during dynamic emotion processing: a movie-fMRI Study.

Research on the neuropathological mechanisms underlying minor depression (MD), particularly in individuals with a history of recurrent minor depressive episodes, is very limited. This study focuses on the abnormality in processing real-life emotional stimuli among individuals with MD. Thirty-two individuals with MD and 31 normal controls (NC) were recruited and underwent comprehensive clinical interview, cognitive assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. During functional MRI scanning, subjects watched positive, negative, and neutral emotional movie clips. We used the inter-subj

Abnormal cortical responses elicited by audiovisual movies in patients with autism spectrum disorder with atypical sensory behavior: A magnetoencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND: Atypical sensory behavior disrupts behavioral adaptation in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, neural correlates of sensory dysfunction using magnetoencephalography (MEG) remain unclear. METHOD: We used MEG to measure the cortical activation elicited by visual (uni)/audiovisual (multisensory) movies in 46 children (7-14 years) were included in final analysis: 13 boys with atypical audiovisual behavior in ASD (AAV+), 10 without this condition, and 23 age-matched typically developing boys. RESULTS: The AAV+ group demonstrated an increase in the cortical activati

Teaching resilience and vulnerability to nursing students using films: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited tradition of using films in healthcare education, although it is constantly developing. Further, to understand complex concepts, such as vulnerability and resilience, is fundamental to improving nursing education. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how a combined approach, using films and expert patients, could influence nursing education on the topics of vulnerability and resilience. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was carried out. Reflective writings of eight bache- lor's degree students during the first semester of the second year were analysed t

Dichoptic movie viewing treats childhood amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-balanced dichoptic experience with perceptual-learning tasks or simple games has been shown to improve visual acuity significantly in amblyopia. However, these tasks are intensive and repetitive, and up to 40% of unsupervised patients are noncompliant. We investigated the efficacy of a potentially more engaging movie method to provide contrast-balanced binocular experience via complementary dichoptic stimulation. METHODS: Eight amblyopic children 4-10 years of age were enrolled in a prospective cohort study to watch 3 dichoptic movies per week for 2 weeks on a passive 3D

Coccidioidomycosis among cast and crew members at an outdoor television filming event--California, 2012.

In March 2013, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified two Doctor's First Reports of Occupational Injury or Illness (DFRs) regarding Los Angeles County residents who had worked at the same jobsite in January 2012 and had been evaluated for possible work-associated coccidioidomycosis (valley fever). Occupational exposure to Coccidioides, the causative fungi, typically is associated with soil-disrupting activities. The physicians noted that both workers were cast or crew members filming a television series episode, and the site of possible exposure was an outdoor set in Vent

The role of affect and rumination in cardiovascular recovery from stress.

This study examined the psychological processes that may impede or facilitate cardiovascular recovery. It was hypothesized that cardiovascular recovery would be hampered by negative affect and rumination, and facilitated by positive affect. In an experimental study, stress was elicited by exposing participants (N=110) to a mental arithmetic task with harassment. After the stress task, affective levels were manipulated via a movie scene with negative, neutral, or positive emotional valence, or without an affect manipulation (control condition). During the entire experiment, heart rate and systo

Asymmetric-echo, short TE, retrospectively gated MR imaging of the heart and pulmonary vessels.

Although retrospectively cardiac-gated (cine) magnetic resonance imaging has shown promise for large-vessel pulmonary vascular imaging, it has not been able to depict the peripheral pulmonary vasculature, where signal is dephased because of susceptibility and/or motion artifacts. The authors developed a cine pulse sequence that uses asymmetric echoes and radio-frequency envelopes to achieve reduced gradient moments and a short TE, thereby reducing signal losses due to disordered flow and susceptibility effects. The effects of TE (2.8-12 msec) and the degree of echo symmetry as measured by the

Potential diagnosis of hemodynamic abnormalities in patent ductus arteriosus by cine magnetic resonance imaging.

Cine magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 11 patients with communication between systemic and pulmonary circulation. In five patients with uncomplicated patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), ductus arteriosus was delineated by a persistent band of low signal intensity, whereas in two patients who also had severe pulmonary hypertension the signal intensity was varied. Two separate low signal intensities in the main pulmonary artery and the descending aorta were each uniformly recorded in the five patients with uncomplicated PDA, consistent with continuous left-to-right shunt and turbulent flow

Resting frontal brain asymmetry predicts affective responses to films.

This article assessed whether resting electroencephalographic (EEG) asymmetry in anterior regions of the brain can predict affective responses to emotion elicitors. Baseline EEG was recorded from 32 female adults, after which Ss viewed film clips preselected to elicit positive or negative affect. Resting alpha power asymmetry in the frontal region significantly predicted self-reported global negative affect in response to clips and predicted the difference between global positive and negative affect. Analyses of discrete emotions revealed a strong relation between frontal asymmetry and fear re

[Modern images of womanhood and their relationship to fetishism].

The image of womanhood accepted by society has changed from the corseted lady at the beginning of the 20th century to the emancipated and booted woman of today. The dictates of fashion in clothing correspond to unconscious wishes nurtured by men; the present fashion enables latent fetishist tendencies to work themselves out within the social framework and is directed at creating the "phallic woman". The boot and leather fetishism masquerading under the guise of a fashionable trend sheds light on unconscious sexual behaviour in the male, the underlying psychodynamics of which are further illumi
