Motorcycle riding is a significant cause of serious injuries to young males. Little is known about the psychological and social characteristics of these riders, despite such knowledge being potentially important for the targeting of appropriate injury prevention interventions. Using problem-behaviour theory to broadly guide and structure the research, the present study focused on identifying predictors of motorcycle riding. Previous research investigating differences between riders and non-riders has tended to be inconclusive, methodologically limited, and lacking in explicit theoretical found

In Italy, motor-vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among persons aged 15-20 years, and motorcycles account for a substantial proportion of traffic-related fatalities: in 1993, of the 6349 traffic-related deaths reported in Italy, 1342 (21.1%) occurred among motorcycle and moped users, and 261 (19.4%) of these deaths were among persons aged 15-20 years. Because of the risks for head injury and death, in 1986 a national law was enacted requiring operators of motorcycles or mopeds to use helmets under specified conditions. To asses compliance with this law and factors associated with

A study is reported of the effect of sex, age, cubic capacity, and training on the rate of reported injury accidents in a cohort of 304 first time learner motorcycle riders resident in the Lothian and Borders of Scotland in 1983. Motorcycle in this paper includes all types of registerable two wheeled motor vehicle. Injury accidents as reported by the police were observed in this cohort over an average period of one year. The overall reported injury accident rate within the cohort was 8.2 per hundred riders. This rate does not seem to be markedly different to the Scottish rate for all riders. I

Motorcycle casualties in Thailand are strongly concentrated on a small proportion of the road network, yet road infrastructure assessment at the national scale remains constrained by incomplete road-inventory data and the cost of field audits. This study develops an integrated framework for identifying motorcycle crash hotspots and examining their visually observable road-environment correlates. Motorcycle crash records from the Thailand Road Accident Management System (2019-2024) were analysed using Network Kernel Density Estimation (NKDE) on 100 m road segments. The NKDE output is interprete

Fatigue is a major determinant of motorcycle accidents, posing a critical threat to road safety by impairing riders' psychophysiological performance and increasing the crash risk. This study introduces a real-time fatigue monitoring system specifically designed for motorcycle riders, integrating physiological signal acquisition with machine learning classification. Heart rate variability (HRV) and galvanic skin response (GSR) sensors, established biomarkers of fatigue, were employed to continuously collect physiological data. The acquired signals underwent pre-processing to minimize noise and

Pioneering road markings for motorcyclists, designed as Perceptual Rider Information for Maximising Expertise and Enjoyment (PRIMEs) were installed on approach to demanding bends at 22 trial sites and two comparison sites across the West Highlands of Scotland. The markings provided a series of 'gateways' to encourage safer riding. With 32,213 motorcyclists observed, the following statistically significant results were observed: speed reductions at 10 trial sites; positive changes in lateral position at the final PRIME gateway marking at 15 trial sites and positive changes in lateral position a

Motorcycle accident studies usually rely upon data collected from road accidents collected through questionnaire surveys/police reports including characteristics of motorcycle riders and contextual data such as road environment. The present study utilizes big data, in the form of vehicle trajectory patterns collected through GPS, coupled with self-reported road accident information along with motorcycle rider characteristics to predict the likelihood of involvement of a motorcyclist in an accident. Random Forest-based machine learning algorithm is employed by taking inputs based on a variety o

BACKGROUND: Occupational safety issues related to food delivery riders emerge with evidence of an increase in associated traffic accidents and injuries along with the rapid growth of the online food delivery business. This paper focuses on food delivery riders' job stress and investigates its relationships with both antecedents and risky riding outcomes.
METHOD: Survey data were collected from 279 Taiwanese food delivery motorcycle riders and analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis.
RESULTS: The results show that job overload and time pressure positively impact riders' job stress, wh

We present the case of a young male who sustained a rare acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injury during a road traffic accident. A left-sided ACJ injury was identified on plain radiographs fourteen days following a motorcycling accident during which significant distracting injuries were sustained. Owing to persistent shoulder pain during awake tertiary surveillance, repeat shoulder plain radiographs were obtained, along with re-examination of the patient's index computed tomography (CT) shoulder imaging, indicating a grade VI left-sided acromioclavicular subluxation. The patient underwent operati

BACKGROUND: Unhelmeted motorcyclists injured in states with lax or poorly enforced helmet safety laws are frequently seen in rural trauma centers. A trauma surgeon started a comprehensive injury prevention and research fund with outreach to a three-state trauma center catchment area promoting injury prevention at area high schools and local communities. We hypothesized that unhelmeted riders would have more severe head injuries and fatalities than helmeted riders.
METHODS: A trauma registry review of 708 injured motorcycle riders over an 11-year period examined demographics, helmet use, and c

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Among the different products and protective gear used by riders of two-wheeled motorized vehicles, back protectors that are designed to prevent damage to the spinal column are widely used today compared other protections. However, few studies measure their effectiveness. Can their effectiveness be measured? How do they help decrease or change the nature of thoracolumbar traumas that occur? To address these questions and remedy the lack of objective data regarding these products, an epidemiological, clinical, and biomechanical analysis of motorcycle riders who were admitt

INTRODUCTION: The majority of Thailand's road traffic deaths occur on motorised two-wheeled or three-wheeled vehicles. Accurately measuring helmet use is important for the evaluation of new legislation and enforcement. Current methods for estimating helmet use involve roadside observation or surveillance of police and hospital records, both of which are time-consuming and costly. Our objective was to develop a novel method of estimating motorcycle helmet use.
METHODS: Using Google Maps, 3000 intersections in Bangkok were selected at random. At each intersection, hyperlinks of four images 90°

BACKGROUND: Every year, there are significant numbers of motorcycle accident casualties in Taiwan. These accidents are the leading cause of maxillofacial trauma. Age should be an important factor of maxillofacial fracture patterns yet there is limited literature on the topic. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the correlation of age with maxillofacial fracture in motorcycle accidents.
METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive analysis conducted over 2-year period at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. We focused on the population of maxillofacial injury caused by motorcycle accidents.
