Pediatric Musculoskeletal Infection: Old and New Techniques for Clinical Use.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) infections in children present substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their diverse clinical manifestations and potential complications. Without timely and accurate diagnosis and intervention, MSK infections can lead to significant morbidity and mortality due to severe clinical sequalae, such as sepsis, joint destruction, and growth disturbances. This article reviews the clinical presentation and up-to-date imaging techniques for MSK infections in the pediatric population to allow for early detection and optimal management. In addition, mimickers of pedi

The Value of Strength as a Predictor of Musculoskeletal Injury in Canadian Armed Forces Basic Infantry Candidates.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) impact military organizations by threatening their operational readiness, warranting investigation into relevant factors to inform risk reduction strategies. While several self-reported and physical performance measures have been associated with MSKI among military personnel, few have been validated and none have been reported in Canadian basic infantry candidates. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between self-reported and physical performance measures and MSKI, and determine their validity as predictors of MSKI, in Canadia

Modern low-field MRI.

This narrative review explores recent advancements and applications of modern low-field (≤ 1 Tesla) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in musculoskeletal radiology. Historically, high-field MRI systems (1.5 T and 3 T) have been the standard in clinical practice due to superior image resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. However, recent technological advancements in low-field MRI offer promising avenues for musculoskeletal imaging. General principles of low-field MRI systems are being introduced, highlighting their strengths and limitations compared to high-field counterparts. Emphasis is placed

Can a Psychologic Profile Predict Successful Return to Full Duty After a Musculoskeletal Injury?

BACKGROUND: Psychologic variables have been shown to have a strong relationship with recovery from injury and return to work or sports. The extent to which psychologic variables predict successful return to work in military settings is unknown. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In a population of active duty soldiers, (1) can a psychologic profile determine the risk of injury after return to full duty? (2) Do psychologic profiles differ between soldiers sustaining injuries in the spine (thoracic or lumbar) and those with injuries to the lower extremities? METHODS: Psychologic variables were assessed in so

US for diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions in the young athlete: emphasis on dynamic assessment.

Ultrasonography (US) is increasingly recognized as an important tool for diagnosis and therapeutic management of a variety of musculoskeleta … with information regarding joint stability. Numerous congenital variants that occur throughout the musculoskeletal system can be associated with awkward sensations such as snapping, popping, and clunking and occasionally with pain. Pathologic processes associated with congenital variants in the upper extremities include slipping rib syndrome, atraumatic anterior sublux …

[Magnetic resonance imaging of the locomotor apparatus].

A multiplanar approach and a good tissue differentiation characterize magnetic resonance imaging which have a great role in exploring numerous musculo-skeletal lesions; review of main indications and limits. MRI is useful in diagnosing certain undisplaced fractures, fatigue and insufficiency fractures, and consequences. Fibrous cartilage and hyalin cartilage lesions, tears of tendons, ligaments and muscles are well appreciated. MRI is also very good for an early and correct diagnosis of avascular necrosis, spinal degenerative lesions, spinal consequences of rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing

Lymphoma of bone, muscle, and skin: CT findings.

Lymphoma can involve any part of the musculoskeletal system. Primary musculoskeletal lymphoma is rare but can occur in bone (reticulum cell sarcoma) or in the skin and subcutaneous tissues (mycosis fungoides). Secondary involvement in the musculoskeletal system is more common and can have a variety of radiologic findings. The definitive diagnosis of musculoskeletal lymphoma, however, is difficult to make by using imaging criteria alone. Any part of the musculoskeletal system can be involved and, therefore, a wide variety of primary and secondary neoplasms or inflammatory processes may have sim…

Neuroimmune interactions in musculoskeletal conditions. An introduction for clinicians.

BACKGROUND: The immune system protects against invading pathogens and helps maintain homeostasis. Other pivotal roles include the regulation of tissue health through interactions with the nervous system. Understanding how these neuroimmune interactions may go awry in musculoskeletal conditions and how they can be targeted therapeutically may optimise patient care. METHODS: We conducted a clinically focused narrative review of the role of the immune and nervous systems in musculoskeletal health and conditions such as neck pain, back pain and osteoarthritis and how psychosocial and behavioural

Coordinating upper limbs for octave playing on the piano via neuro-musculoskeletal modeling.

Understanding the coordination of multiple biomechanical degrees of freedom in biological organisms is crucial for unraveling the neurophysiological control of sophisticated motor tasks. This study focuses on the cooperative behavior of upper-limb motor movements in the context of octave playing on the piano. While the vertebrate locomotor system has been extensively investigated, the coherence and precision timing of rhythmic movements in the upper-limb system remain incompletely understood. Inspired by the spinal cord neuronal circuits (central pattern generator, CPG), a computational neuro-

Role of multi-layer tissue composition of musculoskeletal extremities for prediction of in vivo surface indentation response and layer deformations.

Emergent mechanics of musculoskeletal extremities (surface indentation stiffness and tissue deformation characteristics) depend on the underlying composition and mechanics of each soft tissue layer (i.e. skin, fat, and muscle). Limited experimental studies have been performed to explore the layer specific relationships that contribute to the surface indentation response. The goal of this study was to examine through statistical modeling how the soft tissue architecture contributed to the aggregate mechanical surface response across 8 different sites of the upper and lower extremities. A public

[Musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology--current status and future perspectives].

In the last ten years we are whitnesses of fast development of ultrasound in rheumatology clinical practice and research. The main problem is general perception that US can be highly subjective. Since 2004 an international collaborative group of ultrasound experts known as the OMERACT Ultrasound Task Force has worked to address the metric qualities of ultrasound in RA and other arthritides, according to criteria specified by the OMERACT filter. The same group has worked since 2000 in the EULAR setting for promoting training and educational issues. Part of this group is now promoting the standa

Endocrine disease.

The effects of endocrine disease on bone mass continue to attract attention. Investigations include the effects on the skeleton of thyroid disease, primary hyperparathyroidism, and their treatment. The effect of growth hormone replacement in adults with panhypopituitarism has also been investigated; children with treated growth hormone deficiency appear to reach adulthood with low bone mass. The indications for surgery in asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism have recently been reviewed. The associations between autoimmune thyroid disease and connective tissue disease have been investigated
