Foot Mycoses Among Tanzanian Footballers: A Clinico-Epidemiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Superficial foot mycoses (SFM), including onychomycosis and tinea pedis, are common fungal infections among athletes, particularly professional footballers, owing to repetitive trauma, occlusive footwear, communal facilities, and hygiene practices. These infections may cause discomfort, nail deformity, and impaired athletic performance. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence, clinical spectrum, and factors associated with SFM among professional footballers in the Tanzanian Premier League between 13th August 2024 to 12th August 2025. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional stu…

[Acne and mycoses : between non-drug treatments and resistance].

This article focuses on recent developments regarding acne and fungal infections. Primary care physicians are in a unique position to screen for these disorders during consultations. Non-pharmacological approaches (such as diet and physical treatments) are the subject of ongoing scientific research and are of interest to patients but have not yet been incorporated into guidelines due to a lack of robust evidence. Recent studies highlight the psychological impact of acne, with a high prevalence of anxiety and depression among affected individuals. Regarding fungal infections, the recent emergen

Endemic Mycoses for Pulmonary Clinicians: From Nodules to ARDS.

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Endemic fungal infections are increasingly recognized as important causes of community-acquired pneumonia. Despite this, diagnosis is often delayed or misattributed, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. REVIEW FINDINGS: Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces species, and Coccidioides species are the most common endemic fungal infections in the United States. These infections share commonalities in modes of transmission and pathogenicity where regional climates, weather patterns, and certain exposures play a key role in infectivity. However, changes in climate and h

Epidemiological Characterization of Imported Systemic Mycoses Occurred in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Imported systemic mycoses is a severe fungal infection that can cause diseases in healthy people. However, there is a serious lack of epidemiological data about imported systemic mycoses. Therefore, an epidemiological characterization of imported systemic mycoses in Korea was performed. METHODS: We collected health insurance data between 2008 and 2012 from the Health Insurance Corporation and analyzed the data to determine the prevalence and treatment management of imported systemic mycoses. RESULTS: The prevalence of imported systemic mycoses between 2008 and 2012 increased slow…

Prominent animal mycoses from various regions of the world.

The mycoses selected for presentation in this section are relatively common diseases of companion animals or livestock in certain areas of the world. Malasseziosis is arguably the most frequent mycosis of dogs (as otitis externa and dermatitis) throughout the world, although its diagnosis is often overlooked. Protothecosis is also geographically widespread, particularly in cattle where severe mastitis is a result of adventitious infection from the environment. In contrast, coccidioidomycosis and pythiosis are geographically limited in their occurrence (coccidioidomycosis by geographic region a…

Thoracotomy for pulmonary mycoses in non-HIV-immunosuppressed patients.

Pulmonary mycoses can be life threatening in patients who are in an immunocompromised state stemming from defective host defenses or the use of certain treatment regimens. In 36 immunosuppressed patients undergoing thoracotomy for the treatment of pulmonary fungal disease, the underlying cause of immunosuppression was malignancy (n = 9), Wegener's granulomatosis (n = 4), hematologic disorders (aplastic anemia, 5-Q minus syndrome, or myelofibrosis) (n = 6), or chronic granulomatous disease of childhood (n = 17). The mean age of the patients was 25 years, and 89% were symptomatic (fever, n = 27;…

Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis of Superficial Mycoses: A Scoping Review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly proposed for diagnosing superficial mycoses, yet whether this literature covers the diagnostic pathway evenly, and is mature enough for clinical translation, remains unclear. We mapped AI applications onto an operational partition of the diagnostic pathway (D1-D4), a construct of this review: pre-analytical clinician-facing imaging (D1), analytical microscopy and histopathology (D2), analytical molecular identification (D3) and integrative post-analytical interpretation (D4). Thirty-three primary studies (2007 to 2026) were included, 85% published s…

Silver nanoparticles as antifungal: from formulation to therapy in mycoses.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained prominence in the scientific literature as potential antifungal therapeutic agents, especially those obtained through biological synthesis, due to their superior physicochemical properties. This review examines formulations and patents incorporating AgNPs with antifungal activity, focusing on their applicability in the treatment of mycoses, particularly in vivo. Comparative data on the mechanism of action of AgNPs in planktonic cells and biofilms are presented, as well as transcriptional analyses in fungi exposed to these nanoparticles. The results demo…

Trends in the epidemiology of systemic endemic mycoses in Latin America.

The changing epidemiology and diagnostic challenges of coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis in Latin America are reviewed. The agents responsible for these three systemic endemic mycoses are dimorphic fungi from the Onygenales order, all of which are classified as World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens. However, the mycoses they cause span a notable diversity of contrasting etiologies, target populations, geographic distributions, and factors (including climate changes) that determine their incidence. New, updated maps are presented that reflect the curre…

Cutaneous manifestations of deep mycoses in Nigeria: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Deep mycoses are serious fungal diseases commonly associated with the immunocompromised but can also present in the immunocompetent following severe exposure to fungal pathogens. Included in this group are subcutaneous and systemic fungal infections. OBJECTIVES: Reviews highlighting skin involvement in patients with deep mycosis in the Nigerian setting are sparse in the literature. This systematic review summarized the clinical presentation, risk factors, and diagnosis of deep mycosis presenting with cutaneous manifestations in Nigerians. DESIGN: This was a systematic review cond…

Inhaled Antifungal Agents for the Treatment and Prophylaxis of Pulmonary Mycoses.

Pulmonary mycoses are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The current standard treatment by systemic administration is limited by inadequate local bioavailability and systemic toxic effects. Aerosolisation of antifungals is an attractive approach to overcome these problems, but no inhaled antifungal formulation is currently available for the treatment of pulmonary mycoses. Hence, the development of respirable antifungals formulations is of interest and in high demand. In this review, the recent advances in the development of antifungal formulations for pulmonary delivery are discusse…

Orbital mycoses in a pediatric subtropical population: a case series.

PURPOSE: To report our experience in the diagnosis and management of invasive fungal infections with orbital involvement in children from a … eded to orbital exenteration and survived. The overall survival rate was 67%. CONCLUSIONS: Orbital mycoses can affect children of all ages. Immunocompromised patients are particularly at risk, and mortality rates are high. In a subtropical population, these infections may be caused by a different spectrum of fungi compared to other climate zones. We beli …
