Corneal endothelial morphology of healthy myopic Malaysian children of Chinese ethnicity aged 8-9 years and its association with axial length.

Background: This is a cross-sectional study to further understand the effects of axial length elongation on the corneal endothelial cell's morphology in myopic children. Abnormal changes in the morphology of corneal endothelium are indicators of corneal stress or instability which could be linked to myopia. Methods: 111 school children comprising of 37 emmetropes, 37 mild myopes and 37 moderate myopes aged 8-9 years old were recruited. Visual acuity was measured using the LogMar chart, cycloplegic refraction was determined using an open-field autorefractor (Grand Seiko WAM-5100, Hiroshima, Jap

Comparison of the Near Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment (NETRA) and non-cycloplegic subjective refraction.

OBJECTIVE: The NETRA (Near Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment) is a smartphone-based refractive tool that allows for self-evaluation of refractive error. This study investigates the validity of the NETRA with and without cycloplegia to non-cycloplegic subjective refractions (SR). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Participants underwent NETRA measurements without cycloplegia, and again after the administration of cycloplegia (cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1%). Non-cycloplegic SR were also performed. Variation of refractive measurements in symmetric dioptric power space were investigated using stereo-pair c

Effect of Pupil Dilation with Tropicamide on Retinal Vascular Caliber.

Purpose: The retinal blood vessels reflect changes in the brain's micro-circulation and these changes have been shown to correlate with the incidence of diseases such as stroke, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. Studies investigating the retinal vasculature routinely use pupil dilation with tropicamide to optimize image acquisition and quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tropicamide on retinal vascular parameters using retinal photography. Methods: The study was performed on 41 healthy young subjects of both sexes, using tropicamide to dilate only the right pup

Stopping the rise of myopia in Asia.

This review discusses the rapid rise of myopia among school-age children in East and Southeast Asia during the last 60 years. It describes the history, epidemiology, and presumed causes of myopia in Asia, but also in Europe and the United States. The recent myopia boom is attributed primarily to the educational pressure in Asian countries, which prompts children to read for long hours, often under poor lighting and on computer screens. This practice severely limits the time spent outdoors and reduces exposure to sunlight and far vision. As a consequence, the eyes grow longer and become myopic.

[Treatment of uveitis-associated refractory ocular hypotony with topical ibopamine].

BACKGROUND: Ibopamine is a non-selective dopamine- and adrenalin-receptor agonist that has been shown to cause pupillary dilation and an increase in aqueous humour secretion. This novel drug can be used as a mydriatic agent, as a provocative test in open-angle glaucoma, and for the treatment of persisting ocular hypotony. HISTORY AND SIGNS: This 47-year-old man had a history of uveitis associated with Crohn's disease. Six years after deep sclerectomy for uveitic secondary glaucoma, he developed severe hypotony in his left eye with drop of visual acuity (VA). The hypotony did not respond to to

An overview of the current drugs scene.

Ophthalmic drugs, both diagnostic and therapeutic, play a central role in new developments in optometry, particularly as practitioners extend their involvement in primary care. Optometrists now dilate more patients in routine practice, and this brings increasing concern about the risk of provoking acute closed angle glaucoma (CAG) attacks. It would seem that the risk of inducing acute CAG is far outweighed by the potential benefit of examining the eye through a dilated pupil. Driving difficulties, reported subjectively to be the result of glare, are frequently encountered by patients after dil

Neovascular glaucoma. Current management.

Neovascular glaucoma is one the most difficult forms of glaucoma to treat successfully. Recent advances modifying filtration surgery can result in up to 77% success. Utilization of anterior and posterior segment photocoagulation can maintain an open angle in up to 80% of eyes when they are treated prior to angle closure by peripheral anterior synechiae. Destruction of the ciliary body can be performed more selectively utilizing argon and ruby lasers. This paper presents a rational approach to the management of neovascular glaucoma incorporating these recent advances.

Rapid myopization of the fellow eye in anisometropic amblyopia treated with 1% atropine: a case report.

BACKGROUND: High anisometropia is often accompanied by amblyopia. One percent atropine penalization is an important treatment for anisometropic amblyopia and is as effective as occlusion therapy. On the other hand, 1% atropine had the strongest effect on controlling refractive error and axial length (AL) changes in myopic patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A female child was diagnosed with anisometropia at the age of two. Cycloplegic retinoscopy examination revealed refraction of + 2.5 diopters the right eye and -8.5/-1.5 × 120 diopters the left eye, and full correction spectacles and patching ther

Intracameral phenylephrine for surgical mydriasis and intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome: systemic adverse effects and optimal dose.

Phenylephrine, a potent sympathomimetic, induces mydriasis via iris dilator muscle contraction. Intracameral (IC) phenylephrine has been successfully used in cataract surgery for initial mydriasis, maintaining mydriasis, and management of intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome. Serious systemic adverse events (mainly cardiovascular) have been described with topical phenylephrine drops, but we found very little evidence of such adverse events associated with IC phenylephrine use. However, we suspect under-reporting of such adverse events, as they may instead be ascribed to anxiety, positioning, an
