Carbon nanotubes and pleural damage: perspectives of nanosafety in the light of asbestos experience.

Carbon nanotubes are molecular-scale one-dimensional manufactured materials which display several potential applications in engineering and materials science. Burgeoning evidence demonstrates that carbon nanotubes and asbestos share comparable physical properties. Therefore carbon nanotubes might display toxic effects and the extent of the toxicity is more specifically directed to lung and pleura. These effects are related to properties of carbon nanotubes, such as their structure, length, aspects ratio, surface area, degree of aggregation, extent of oxidation, bound functional group, method o…

Imaging methods for determining uptake and toxicity of carbon nanotubes in vitro and in vivo.

Demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is increasing rapidly in electrical, mechanical, and health and medical applications due to their thermal, electrical conductive and other properties. The continued commercial up-scaling of CNT production and application needs to be accompanied by an understanding of the occupational health, public safety and environmental implications of these materials. An increasing volume of literature on the toxicity of CNTs is being published; however, the results of these studies are frequently inconclusive. Due to the enormous number of permutations of nanoparticle sh…

In vivo imaging of carbon nanotube biodistribution using magnetic resonance imaging.

As novel engineered nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are extensively used in nanotechnology due to their superior properties, it becomes critical to fully understand their biodistribution and effect when accidently inhaled. A noninvasive follow-up study would be beneficial to evaluate the biodistribution and effect of nanotube deposition after exposure directly in vivo. Combined helium-3 and proton magnetic resonance resonance (MRI) were used in a rat model to evaluate the biodistribution and biological impact of raw single-wall CNTs (raw-SWCNTs) and superpurified SWCNTs (SP-SWCNT…

Hall measurements on carbon nanotube paper modified with electroless deposited platinum.

Carbon nanotube paper, sometimes referred to as bucky paper, is a random arrangement of carbon nanotubes meshed into a single robust structure, which can be manipulated with relative ease. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were used to make the nanotube paper, and were subsequently modified with platinum using an electroless deposition method based on substrate enhanced electroless deposition. This involves the use of a sacrificial metal substrate that undergoes electro-dissolution while the platinum metal deposits out of solution onto the nanotube paper via a galvanic displacement reaction. The s…

Mitochondria transfer via tunneling nanotubes drives macrophage immunosuppression and metabolic reprogramming in pediatric AML.

Although immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, its benefits in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remain limited, partly due to an incomplete understanding of the AML microenvironment. While most studies focus on T cells, innate immune populations such as macrophages are less well explored. In pediatric AML patients, we demonstrate that immunosuppressive macrophages dominate the AML microenvironment and support growth of RUNX1::RUNX1T1 and KMT2A-rearranged leukemic blasts. In co-culture experiments, AML cells reprogrammed naïve and pro-inflammatory macrophages toward an anti-i

Extrusion-Stretched Multigrooved Conduits Loaded with Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Peripheral Nerve Regeneration.

Nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) represent a promising alternative to autologous nerve transplantation; however, their clinical efficacy remains limited by insufficient structural integrity and suboptimal fascicular guidance. Here, we report a novel extrusion-stretched strategy for fabricating multigrooved NGCs (MNGCs) reinforced with oriented multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). This scalable and controllable method effectively prevents conduit collapse during fabrication and enables precise regulation of conduit geometry, overcoming key limitations of conventional forming approaches. Incorpo…

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for regulating nickel nanoparticles towards efficient electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

Coating transition metal nanoparticles with the carbon layer represents a highly effective strategy to modulate electronic structure for enhanced catalytic performance. Nevertheless, it is challenging for these materials to achieve the desired catalytic activity. Here, we synthesized a series of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes confined nickel nanoparticles (Nix@NC) through high-temperature pyrolysis to facilitate the efficient electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to carbon monoxide (CO). The morphology and electronic structure of Nix@NC were effectively controlled by optimizing the c…

α-Synuclein triggers intercellular nanotubes formation to prevent apoptosis in astroglia by promoting stemness.

Astrocytes play a significant role in neuroprotection by internalizing neurodegenerative aggregates and facilitating their degradation. Recent studies indicate that α-Synuclein (α-SYN) protofibrils promote the transfer of pathogenic aggregates and dysfunctional mitochondria between astroglia via tunneling nanotubes (TNTs), which enhances cell survival and resistance to apoptosis. However, the underlying mechanism of TNT-driven apoptosis resistance remains unclear. We find that α-SYN protofibrils induce aberrant mitochondria with decreased membrane potential (Ψm) and promote dynamic actin remod…

Tunneling nanotubes contribute to Zika virus pathogenesis at the maternal-fetal interface in vivo.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can result in severe fetal outcomes, yet the mechanisms of transplacental dissemination remain incompletely defined. We previously showed that ZIKV induces tunneling nanotubes (TNTs), actin-rich intercellular conduits that enable direct cell-to-cell transfer of viral components. Here, we investigated the in vivo role of TNTs in ZIKV maternal-fetal transmission using complementary pregnancy models. A TNT-deficient ZIKV mutant (ZIKVΔTNT), harboring a change between residues 40 and 52 of the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1), showed markedly reduced viral …

Synergistic effect of PbS nanoparticle deposition on TiO2 nanotubes for efficient indoor air remediation.

This study investigated the photocatalytic performance of PbS-NPs/NTs-TiO2 photocatalysts for the degradation of Butane-2, 3-Dione (BUT). The impact of decorating dioxide nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) with lead sulfide nanoparticles (PbS-NPs) on the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was the focus of the investigation. The titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) were synthesized by electrochemical anodization of a titanium-based substrate. At the same time, lead sulfide nanoparticles (PbS-NPs) were deposited using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The mean diameter of PbS-NPs inc…

Preparation and Formation Mechanism of Carbon Nanotubes via Coal Pyrolysis Using Alkaline Potassium Catalysts.

In this study, two potassium-based alkaline compounds, KOH and K2CO3, were utilized as catalysts for the pyrolysis of bituminous coal to directly synthesize carbon nanotubes (CNTs). During the conventional reaction process, CNTs were observed as unusual products, with respective contents reaching 9.43 and 8.98 wt.% in the pyrolysis products. The results indicate that at temperatures exceeding 600 °C, KOH undergoes complete conversion into K2CO3. The melting point of K2CO3 (890 °C) serves as the critical temperature for the formation of CNTs. Under the reducing atmosphere provided by -CH2- and …

Preparation, acid modification and catalytic activity of kaolinite nanotubes in α-pinene oxide isomerization.

In this work kaolinite nanotubes (KNT) were obtained from commercial kaolin AKF-78 (Uzbekistan) by starting material sequential intercalation by DMSO and methanol, followed by treatment with a cetyltrimethylammonium chloride solution. Acid functionalization of KNT for catalytic applications was successfully performed for the first time using a two-step treatment with piranha solution (H2SO4-H2O2), which resulted in the removal of organic impurities as synthetic artifacts and an increase in specific surface area by 3.9 times (up to 159 m2 g-1), pore volume by 1.5 times (0.23 cm3 g-1) and acidit…

Preparation of Cobalt-Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Activated Peroxymonosulfate Degradation of Carbamazepine.

Cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3@NCNT-800) were synthesized via a facile and economical approach to investigate the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The experimental data revealed that at a neutral pH of 7 and an initial CBZ concentration of 20 mg/L, the application of Co3@NCNT-800 at 0.2 g/L facilitated a degradation rate of 64.7% within 60 min. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the presence of pyri…

Assessments of carbon nanotubes toxicities in zebrafish larvae using multiple physiological and molecular endpoints.

In recent years, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become one of the most promising materials for the technology industry. However, due to the extensive usage of these materials, they may be released into the environment, and cause toxicities to the organism. Here, their acute toxicities in zebrafish embryos and larvae were evaluated by using various assessments that may provide us with a novel perspective on their effects on aquatic animals. Before conducting the toxicity assessments, the CNTs were characterized as multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized with hydroxyl and carboxyl group…

Combined exposure to multiwalled carbon nanotubes and dibutyl phthalates aggravated airway inflammation in rats.

Previous work has shown that mice exposed to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) adsorbed onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), via tail vein injection, displayed black lesions in their lungs. To investigate the mechanism causing this toxicity in the lung tissue, we performed an experiment with rats, exposing them to DBP adsorbed onto MWCNTs via a tail vein injection for 14 days. The results revealed pulmonary edema and greyish-black lung tissue in the MWCNTs and the MWCNTs + DBP combined exposure groups. In the combined exposure group there was evident alveolar fragmentation and adhesion, and lung…

Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Highly Stable Room Temperature and Humidity-Tolerant Triethylamine Sensing.

Triethylamine (TEA) poses a significant threat to our health and is extremely difficult to detect at the parts-per-billion (ppb) level at room temperature. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are versatile materials used in chemiresistive vapor sensing. However, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity with a low detection limit remains a challenge for pristine CNTs, hindering their widespread commercial application. To address these issues, we propose functionalized multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) with carboxylic acid (COOH)-based sensing channels for ultrasensitive TEA detection under ambient conditions. Ad…
