Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) has emerged as a significant public health issue, in Canada and elsewhere. Health experts increasingly acknowledge that the disproportionate impact of FASD on indigenous people is driven by social and historical contexts, especially in settler colonial states like Canada. However, they generally frame FASD as preventable through abstinence and the effects of FASD as manageable through provision of appropriate medical and legal protection to affected offspring. Drawing from Marxist, anticolonial and anti-imperial theories and applying a Critical Discourse

This paper describes the involvement of peer trainers in Tree of Life groups for young people living with Type 1 Diabetes. The approach is informed by narrative therapy and collective narrative practice and principles, where people are seen as separate from problems and the focus is on creating opportunities for people to tell and witness one another's preferred identity stories. Young people who have participated in a Tree of Life day are invited to join the project as peer trainers who help facilitate, engage group participants, witness their stories and consult to the project. Involving pee

Literary narratives treating infertility metaphorically or thematically abound, but stories about women's individual experiences with infertility and assisted reproduction are less scrutinized by literature scholars. Acknowledging the role of online writing in the proliferation of such stories in the post-in vitro fertilization era, this article applies the tools of narrative analysis to a set of social media narratives authored by women undergoing Assisted Reproduction Therapy. I argue that examining the guiding metaphors and central conflicts of such texts reveals their significant intervent

Sexual transaction, or any exchange of financial or material goods for sex, contributes to the disproportionate HIV burden among young women aged 15-24 years in sub-Saharan Africa. We analysed representations of sexual transactions in a sample of 363 narratives about HIV written by young Africans. The narratives were written at 4 time points (1997, 2005, 2008, 2014) by authors aged 10-24 years in urban and rural areas of Senegal, Burkina Faso, South-east Nigeria, Kenya and Eswatini, formerly Swaziland. We combined three analytical approaches: descriptive statistics of quantifiable characterist

In an online randomized experiment with 419 Israeli adult women using two rounds of data collected at a one-month interval, we test the effects of exposure to messages with greater and lesser detail about behaviors that increase personal risk (RID: Risk Information Detail) on women's self-efficacy to perform the risky behaviors. Participants viewed news media videos about anorexia (or a control video about vaccination). Video messages varied according to the amount of detail provided regarding the specific risky behaviors (High vs. low RID), and message format (narrative or expository). Effect

This study analyzed narratives from 18 Mandarin-speaking children with specific language impairment (SLI) and 18 typically developing children matched on chronological age. The narrative data were based on Frog, where are you? Participant's narratives were analyzed at the macrostructure and microstructure levels. Regarding the macrostructure, the results revealed that the narratives of children with SLI included significantly less story grammar components, less evaluative comments, and were less coherent than those of TD controls. With respect to the microstructure, the two groups of children

This qualitative study reflects an analysis of 50 stories told by Americans living with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition marked by widespread physical pain. Stories were randomly collected from The Experience Project, an online public forum, and analyzed using the communication theory of identity as a guiding framework. Thematic analysis was used to examine how the legitimacy narratives of people with fibromyalgia respond to the American discourse of hard work. Three narrative themes emerged from the data: The Personal Experience of Living With Fibromyalgia (personal layer of identity), the S

Zoonosis calls for a multispecies approach to medical semiotics, a method involving the decipherment of outward symptoms and the construction of narrative. In Madagascar, early detection of bubonic plague outbreaks relies on sightings of sick and dead rats. However, people most vulnerable to plague often do not perceive warning signs, and plague symptoms do not always present in rat and human bodies. In August 2015, a plague outbreak killed 10 residents of a rural hamlet in the central highlands. To reconstruct the transmission chain, scientists elicited survivors' memories of dead rats in the

BACKGROUND: Vast numbers of domestic violence (DV) incidents are attended by the New South Wales Police Force each year in New South Wales and recorded as both structured quantitative data and unstructured free text in the WebCOPS (Web-based interface for the Computerised Operational Policing System) database regarding the details of the incident, the victim, and person of interest (POI). Although the structured data are used for reporting purposes, the free text remains untapped for DV reporting and surveillance purposes.
OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we explore whether text mining can automatic

Social media platforms such as Pinterest are often used as venues for discussing relationships, making them ideal channels for promoting healthy relationships and preventing intimate partner violence (IPV). This is particularly relevant for IPV, which has been historically understood as a personal issue and lacked support as a significant public health issue. To explore its potential as a platform for prevention, this study examines the ways in which IPV messages on Pinterest reflect public health understandings of, and approaches to, prevention, and how Pinterest users engage with these posts

There are particular complexities faced by people attempting to tell their stories in the context of social stigma, such as the hostility which often surrounds injecting drug use. In this article, we identify some of the distinct advantages of taking a narrative approach to understanding these complexities by exploring a single case study, across two life-history interviews, with "Jimmy," a young man with a history of social disadvantage, incarceration, and heroin dependence. Drawing on Miranda Fricker's notion of "hermeneutical injustice," we consider the effects of stigmatization on the soci

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) significantly increases a person's risk of ischemic stroke. However, little is known about the experiences of these people or what influences their decision to access care. This article explores the stories of three people who experienced a TIA. All participants were interviewed after receiving a diagnosis of TIA by a specialist neurologist. By utilizing a framework of narrative inquiry, several storylines were revealed across temporal, social, and geographical landscapes. The main storylines include: bodily disruption, time stasis, altered temporal perception

This paper aims to queer evidence-based practice by troubling the concepts of evidence, knowledge and mental illness. The evidence-based narrative that emerged within biomedicine has dominated health care. The biomedical notion of 'evidence' has been critiqued extensively and is seen as exclusive and limiting, and even though the social constructionist paradigm attempts to challenge the authority of biomedicine to legitimate what constitutes acceptable evidence or knowledge for those experiencing mental illness, biomedical notions of evidence appear to remain relatively intact. Queer theory of

What can an exploration of contemporary Aboriginal healing programs such as those offered in Canadian prisons and urban clinics tell us about the importance of history in understanding social and psychological pathology, and more significantly the salience of the concept of "historical trauma"? The form of Aboriginal "healing" that has emerged in recent decades to become dominant in many parts of the country is itself a reflection of historical processes and efforts to ameliorate the consequences of what is today often termed "historical trauma." In other words, contemporary notions of "healin

Contemporary Taiwanese literature has witnessed an emergence of narratives addressing cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, constituting a significant literary phenomenon that merits scholarly attention. These narratives often delve into intergenerational dynamics between ageing parents, whose stories are untold, and their adult children, who emerge as literary voices. Through the filial narratives of amnesia, writers reveal the relational nature of memory itself. Through theoretical frameworks of Asian gerontology and narrative medicine, this study examines how Taiwanese dementia narrati

This study investigates how mainstream Chinese media have portrayed foreign states over the past seven decades. While scholars have extensively studied foreign media portrayals of China, little systematic or longitudinal evidence exists on how China's official party press frames the world across different countries and time periods. Using word embedding techniques, this study traces media representations of major foreign countries (N = 94) on People's Daily (1950-2019). Results show that media favorability trends in the People's Daily closely mirror major turning points in Chinese foreign poli

Industries producing harmful products such as tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, and fossil fuels use highly developed communication strategies to shape public opinion, influence policy, and protect their markets. These 'playbooks' rely on recurring tactics, including framing harms as matters of personal choice, promoting innovation narratives, manufacturing doubt, delaying regulation, and obscuring human consequences. While public health has increasingly recognized these strategies, responses have often been fragmented and reactive. This paper argues that health promotion requires a pra

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most emotionally demanding conditions encountered in neurosurgical and acute neurotrauma practice. Sudden neurological deterioration, unexpected death in young and previously healthy individuals, persistent prognostic uncertainty, and systemic resource constraints together create a uniquely intense emotional environment for clinicians involved in TBI care. While the psychosocial consequences of TBI for patients and caregivers have been extensively studied, the emotional burden borne by treating clinicians-particularly experiences of grief, moral distre
