Olfaction in Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: The first study.

BACKGROUND: To study the pattern of olfactory dysfunction/recovery in juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA). METHODS: Olfactory assessment was undertaken in 30 patients (category1) both pre- & post-operatively and in another 18 (category 2) only postoperative. All patients underwent transpalatal excision and variables of interest included age, radiological stage/parameters & tumor size. RESULTS: Objective olfactory dysfunction was seen in 60% while involvement of olfactory strip was suggested in 50%. Despite some marginal trends only noted between size/age with change of olfaction, Pear

Irradiated ears in nasopharyngeal carcinoma survivors: A review.

This article reviews the literature on otological complications in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) survivals after irradiation during the past three decades. Symptoms of the irradiated ears were assessed from the external ear canal, through the middle ear cavity including the Eustachian tube, and to the inner ear compartments. The development of radioimaging diagnostic techniques, the introduction from adjuvant chemotherapy to concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and the invention of radiotherapeutic equipment to intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) have increased the survival rate of NPC patients

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in a 32-year-old man.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NA) is a benign, highly vascularised tumour of the nasopharynx, which typically occurs in young males aged 14-25 years. We report an interesting case of an NA arising de novo in a 32-year-old male. He was referred to our facility for severe nasal haemorrhage after biopsy of a left nasopharyngeal mass. In the operating room, extensive bleeding was noted, and an endoscopic medial maxillectomy was performed, and the left internal maxillary artery was ligated allowing for near total resection of the lesion. The pathological specimen confirmed the diagnosis of NA. To ou

Pneumococcal Colonization and the Nasopharyngeal Microbiota of Children in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal colonization precedes infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. A more detailed understanding of interactions between S. pneumoniae and the nasopharyngeal microbiota of children could inform strategies to prevent pneumococcal infections. METHODS: We collected nasopharyngeal swabs from children 1 to 23 months of age in Botswana between August 2012 and June 2016. We tested samples for S. pneumoniae and common respiratory viruses using polymerase chain reaction. We sequenced the V3 region of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene and used random forest models to ide

Evaluation of Volume of Nasopharyngeal Cancers by the Cavalieri Principle.

Prediction of tumor volume using the Cavalieri method may be helpful in management of therapy and evaluation of treatment results. The aim of this study was to adapt the Cavalieri stereological method to magnetic resonance imaging for determining volume of nasopharyngeal cancers and assess changes after treatment using the Cavalieri method. Serial MRI images in the sagittal plane were obtained from a total of 33 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinomas (11 with stage T2, 11 with stage T3, and 11 with stage T4 lesions). The images were analyzed retrospectively before and two months following the

Non-Keratinizing Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma with Adenomatous Differentiation.

A case of non-keratinizing, EBV-positive (EBER-in situ hybridization), carcinoma with adenomatous differentiation is presented. The patient is a 40 year old male with T2N2M0 disease who received standard combined chemo- and radiotherapy with complete resolution of all tumor. The tumor cells were strongly positive for low-molecular weight cytokeratins (AE1-3) and scattered cells expressed cytokeratin 20. No expression of cytokeratin 5/6, 7, p63, TTF-1, CDX2 or androgen receptor was detected. There was no evidence of recurrence or disease progression on follow-up after 19 months, which included

Management of nasopharyngeal teratomas associated with cleft palate.

Nasopharyngeal teratomas are rare tumours, responsible for a high birth mortality rate from acute respiratory distress. Palatine localization can lead to an embryopathogenic mechanical obstacle responsible for a cleft palate. The aim of this study was to update current knowledge concerning the management of this rare pathological association. We conducted a multicentre, retrospective study by case analysis. The inclusion criteria were patients of any age under care for a nasopharyngeal teratoma associated with a velopalatine cleft. The diagnosis of the teratoma was confirmed by histological an

The Nasopharyngeal Microbiota of Children With Respiratory Infections in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of child pneumonia deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Microbial communities in the nasopharynx are a reservoir for pneumonia pathogens and remain poorly described in African children. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from children with pneumonia (N = 204), children with upper respiratory infection symptoms (N = 55) and healthy children (N = 60) in Botswana between April 2012 and April 2014. We sequenced the V3 region of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene and used partitioning around medoids to cluster samples into microbiota biotypes. We then used multiv

Otitis Media and Nasopharyngeal Colonization in ccl3-/- Mice.

We previously found CC chemokine ligand 3 (CCL3) to be a potent effector of inflammation during otitis media (OM): exogenous CCL3 rescues the OM phenotype of tumor necrosis factor-deficient mice and the function of macrophages deficient in several innate immune molecules. To further delineate the role of CCL3 in OM, we evaluated middle ear (ME) responses of ccl3-/-mice to nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi). CCL chemokine gene expression was evaluated in wild-type (WT) mice during the complete course of acute OM. OM was induced in ccl3-/- and WT mice, and infection and inflammation were

Reassessing the Anatomic Origin of the Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma.

OBJECTIVE: A modern imaging review is necessary to further define the anatomic origin of the juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. METHODS: After institutional review board approval, a search from January 1998 to January 2013 yielded 33 male patients (aged 10-23 years) with pathologically proven juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma lesions, as well as pretreatment computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma involvement was assessed in the following regions: sphenopalatine foramen, pterygopalatine fossa, vidian canal, nasopharynx, nasal cavity, sphenoid

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma incidence and mortality in China, 2013.

BACKGROUND: We estimated the incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in China in 2010 according to the data of 145 domestic population-based cancer registries in 2014, and no such reports since then. Hence, to further and better understand its epidemiology in China and to provide more precise scientific information for its control and prevention in China, we analyzed the NPC incidence and mortality of 255 domestic population-based cancer registries, and estimated the national rates in 2013 again. METHODS: NPC incidence and mortality data of 255 domestic cancer registries in

Unilateral Alacrima as a Presenting Symptom of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma may present to oculoplastic surgeons and ophthalmologists as epiphora or medial canthus swelling. In contrast, the authors describe an uncommon initial presentation of alacrima in a 30-year-old female with nasopharyngeal carcinoma without invasion of the nasolacrimal sac, duct, or lacrimal gland. The diagnosis was delayed due an initial misdiagnosis of dry eye. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma should be included in the differential for diminished tear production, especially if it presents asymmetrically.

Development of the Nasopharyngeal Microbiota in Infants with Cystic Fibrosis.

RATIONALE: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by early structural lung disease caused by pulmonary infections. The nasopharynx of infants is a major ecological reservoir of potential respiratory pathogens. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the development of nasopharyngeal microbiota profiles in infants with CF compared with those of healthy control subjects during the first 6 months of life. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study, from the time of diagnosis onward, in which we collected questionnaires and 324 nasopharynx samples from 20 infants with CF and 45 age-matched healthy contr

Optimal Depth for Nasopharyngeal Temperature Probe Positioning.

BACKGROUND: The nasopharynx is considered 1 of the 4 generally reliable core temperature measurement sites. But curiously, there is no consensus on how far past the nares to insert the probe. Insertion depth is likely to influence the accuracy of nasopharyngeal temperature measurements because probes near the nares will be cooled by ambient air; similarly, probes inserted too far may approach the airway and be cooled by ventilation gases. We thus determined the range of nasopharyngeal probe insertion depths that best approximate reference core temperature measured in the distal esophagus. MET

Identification of key genes involved in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the most common cancer originating from the nasopharynx. OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanisms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, we analyzed GSE12452 microarray data. METHODS: GSE12452 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and included 31 nasopharyngeal carcinoma samples and 10 normal nasopharyngeal tissue samples. The differentially expressed genes were screened by ANOVA in the PGS package. Using the BiNGO plugin in Cytoscape and pathway enrichment analysis in the PGS package, functional and pathway enrichment analyses were performed sepa

Therapeutic vaccination strategies to treat nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects most people worldwide. EBV has oncogenic potential and is strongly associated with several lymphomas and carcinomas, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), that together total 200,000 cases of cancer each year. All EBV-associated cancers express viral proteins that allow highly selective immunotherapeutic targeting of the malignant cells. A number of therapeutic EBV vaccines have been tested in clinical trials with evidence of immune boosting and clinical responses in NPC patients. Therapeutic vaccination could be used after adoptive T-cell transfer to incre

A Rare Nasopharyngeal Teratoma Arising From the Vomer.

Teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms derived from the 3 germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare teratoma arising anywhere from the oronasal cavity, regarded as an expanding, avity filling lesion, with a high mortality rate because of severe airway obstruction, especially in the neonatal period and make up only 2% of all teratomas. The authors present a case of an infant girl with a single, finger-like, hairy teratoma arising from the vomer and protruding from the mouth with bilateral complete cleft palate, cleft lip, and cleft alveolus. Chemotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Cancer: Neoadjuvant, Concomitant, and/or Adjuvant.

Nasopharyngeal cancers are unique among other head and neck cancers, not only in epidemiology and histological characteristics, but also on treatment strategies as well. Radiotherapy is the primary treatment due to its radiosensitivity. In locally advanced stages, concurrent chemoradiation has been established to be effective to eradicate the disease and improve survival, in favor of radiotherapy alone. While increasing studies have explored the potential benefit of adding more chemotherapy to the concurrent regimen, whether adjuvant or neoadjuvant, it is generally agreed that proper patient s

Isolated nasopharyngeal metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide, the incidence of which parallels that of areas with high prevalence of chronic hepatitis. HCC commonly metastasizes to the lungs, lymph nodes, adrenals and bones with the overall prognosis of metastatic HCC being dismal. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We herein with present a case of a 70-year-old male who was referred to our institution with history of nasal obstruction and nasal bleeding which on further evaluation was diagnosed to have an isolated metastasis to nasopharynx from liver primary. DISCUSSION: Extr
