Subclinical infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and gastrointestinal nematodes results in reduced weight gain in grazing weaned lambs.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum (AP) is a tick-transmitted bacterium, causative of tick-borne fever (TBF) in sheep. Symptoms of TBF vary in severity from asymptomatic to fatal, and the disease manifests generally with immunosuppression. Here, we describe the effects of a naturally occurring AP infection on lamb welfare (bodyweight, dag score and faecal egg counts (FEC) in a UK farming setting. In 2022 TBF was incidentally diagnosed in a group of lambs undergoing parasitological field studies. Lamb performance and strongyle FEC were collected fortnightly over 21 weeks, and blood was collected for AP

Differential resistance to nematode infection is associated with the genotype- and age-dependent pace of intestinal T cell homing.

The resistance of inbred mice to nematode infections varies depending on the extent of protective Th2 responses. Here, we compared two mouse lines differing in resistance to infection with the enteric nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri despite the similar instruction of GATA-3+ T effector cells. Resistant BALB/c mice rapidly recruited high numbers of Th2 cells to the gut within the 1-week time frame required for larval development in the intestinal submucosa. C57BL/6 mice failed in the optimal control of early nematode fitness, with mucosal Th2 response peaking after 2 weeks when the la…

The soybean immune receptor GmBIR1 regulates host transcriptome, spliceome, and immunity during cyst nematode infection.

BAK1-INTERACTING RECEPTOR LIKE KINASE1 (BIR1) is a negative regulator of various aspects of disease resistance and immune responses. Here, we investigated the functional role of soybean (Glycine max) BIR1 (GmBIR1) during soybean interaction with soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines) and the molecular mechanism through which GmBIR1 regulates plant immunity. Overexpression of wild-type variant of GmBIR1 (WT-GmBIR1) using transgenic soybean hairy roots significantly increased soybean susceptibility to SCN, whereas overexpression of kinase-dead variant (KD-GmBIR1) significantly increase

Natural infection of white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) with entomopathogenic nematodes in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

White grubs are root feeding larvae of beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) that are sporadic pests in agriculture and can lead to economic damage. The grubs feed on the roots of plants, while the adult beetle can bore into underground stems, as well as cause defoliation of plants. Sporadic incidence of larvae with symptoms of nematode infections were detected in wattle and sugarcane plantations in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The larvae with infection symptoms were isolated, washed, and put on water traps to collect infective juveniles of possible nematode infections. Three speci…

Immune markers in goats selected for reduced gastrointestinal nematode egg count under artificial infection conditions.

This study aimed to further investigate the mechanisms responsible for inhibition of gastrointestinal nematode egg production in a line of Scottish Cashmere Goat selected for low faecal egg count. Animals were chosen as the lowest egg producers from a line selected for low egg output (selected group) with a second group from the wider herd based on high faecal egg count as controls. All animals were artificially infected with Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus vitrinus, then treated with anthelmintic and challenge infected prior to euthanasia and post mortem sampling. There was no

Infectivity of entomopathogenic nematodes against the legume pod-borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius, infesting pigeon pea.

The legume pod-borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) (LPB), is an important insect pest of pigeon pea. Chemical pesticides are generally employed to manage this pest, but because of the soil residue issues and other environmental hazards associated with their use, biopesticides are also in demand. Another benign alternative is to use entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) to manage this vital pest. In the present study, the infectivity of ten native EPNs was evaluated against LPB by assessing their penetration and production in the LPB. The effectiveness of the promising EPNs aga

Individual variability among autochthonous sheep in Northern Tunisia to infection by abomasum nematodes and Babesia/Theileria parasites.

In Tunisia, livestock plays an important role in the economy; unfortunately, Tunisian sheep population faces several health challenges. The aim of this trial was to study phenotypic variability of four local sheep breeds and strains to abomasum nematodes infection and to Babesia/Theileria parasites. Faeces, blood and abomasum contents were collected from 310 sheep slaughtered in eight commercial slaughterhouses across North Tunisia. Haematological and biochemical parameters were assessed. DNA was extracted and catch-all primers were used to detect both Theileria spp. and Babesia spp. DNA. Faec

Anthelmintic effects of forage chicory (Cichorium intybus) against gastrointestinal nematode parasites in experimentally infected cattle.

Two experiments studied the effects of dietary chicory against gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle. In Experiment (Exp.) 1, stabled calves were fed chicory silage (CHI1; n = 9) or ryegrass/clover hay (CTL1; n = 6) with balanced protein/energy intakes between groups. After 16 days, all calves received 10 000 Ostertagia ostertagi and 66 000 Cooperia oncophora third-stage larvae (L3) [day (D) 0 post-infection (p.i.)]. In Exp. 2, calves were assigned to pure chicory (CHI2; n=10) or ryegrass/clover (CTL2; n = 10) pastures. After 7 days, animals received 20 000 O. ostertagi L3/calf (D0 p.i.) and we

Ovicidal and larvicidal activity of extracts of Opuntia ficus-indica against gastrointestinal nematodes of naturally infected sheep.

This study describes the in vitro anthelmintic activity of extracts from Opuntia ficus indica against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The anthelmintic activity was evaluated by inhibition of egg hatching, larval development and larval migration assays. The residual aqueous fractions from cladodes and fruits showed higher ovicidal activity with EC50 values of 7.2mg/mL and 1.5mg/mL, respectively. The aqueous, hexane, and ethyl acetate fractions from fruits and the aqueous fraction from cladodes inhibited 100% of larval development at the lowest concentration tested (1.56mg/mL). The crude cl

A co-infection with two gastrointestinal nematodes alters host immune responses and only partially parasite dynamics.

Given their global distribution and abilities to persist in the host, helminths can play a crucial role in affecting risk of infections by increasing individual variation in infection. Helminth co-infections are of particular interest because by altering host immune responses, they can modify host susceptibility and thus intensity and transmission of other parasites/pathogens. The dynamics of co-infection were examined using two helminths of the European rabbit. Individuals were simultaneously challenged with a primary dose of both parasites, and changes in intensity were examined in relation

The effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on infection with the nematodes Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora in calves.

Diet-induced changes in the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of immune cells influences the immune phenotype that develops following infection. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of manipulating dietary PUFA supply on tissue fatty acids composition and immunity to a mixed infection with an abomasal and an intestinal nematode parasite in calves. Calves (n=24) were allocated into two treatment groups and fed 25 g/day of either fish oil (n-3 group) or a binary mixture of palm/rapeseed oil (normal group) as a supplement in milk replacer. Within each treatment group eight calv

Mucosal mast cells and nematode infection: strain-specific differences in mast cell precursor frequency revisited.

Mucosal mast cells (MMC) play an important role in the immune response against selected species of intestinal nematode. The kinetics with which different strains of inbred mice resolve infection with Trichinella spiralis correlates with their ability to mount MMC responses in the intestinal mucosa. Homologues of MMC that express and constitutively secrete abundant amounts of the granule chymase, mouse mast cell protease-1 (mMCP-1), can be generated in vitro from bone marrow cultures supplemented with interleukins-3 and -9, stem cell factor and transforming growth factor-beta1. Prevalence of strongyle nematodes in naturally infected ponies of different ages and during different seasons of the year in Louisiana.

One hundred and seventeen ponies were surveyed for the seasonal prevalence of strongyloid parasites, particularly cyathostomes, and for host- and age-related differences in these infections. For 56 ponies, all stages of the cyathostome life cycle, both mucosal and luminal, were enumerated. Total numbers of cyathostomes and percentage of developing larvae (DL) encysted in the mucosa remained constant in all 4 seasons of the year, whereas a significant increase in the percentage of adults in the cyathostome population occurred in fall. In yearling ponies, encysted early third-stage larvae consti

Albendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic, in the treatment of intestinal nematode and cestode infection: a multicenter study in 480 patients.

The anthelmintic activity of and patient tolerance to albendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic, were studied in a multicenter trial involving 480 patients ranging in age from 2 to 60 years. The patients had single or mixed infections caused by pinworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, threadworms, or tapeworms. The stools were examined by the direct method, and ova were counted by means of the Kato-Katz technique. A Graham-Scotch test was also done in patients infected with Enterobius vermicularis. Most patients received a single 400-mg dose of albendazole; adults were given two tablets, a

Cortisone-induced immunotolerance to nematode infection in CBA/Ca mice. I. Investigation of the defect in the protective response.

The parasitic nematode Trichuris muris is expelled from the large intestine of CBA/Ca mice after approximately 20 days of infection. Short term treatment with cortisone acetate prevented expulsion and allowed the establishment and survival of an adult worm population for at least 70 days. This tolerance to the primary infection persisted after removal of the adult worms by chemotherapy and allowed the full development of a secondary infection. High levels of blast activity were seen in the mesenteric lymph node on days 30 and 40 of a primary infection in tolerant mice. Serum taken from toleran
