Solitary fibrous tumor occurring at unusual sites: A clinico-pathological series of 31 cases with emphasis on its wide morphological spectrum.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a relatively rare mesenchymal fibroblastic tumor occurring most commonly in adults with no gender predilection. Although the pathological diagnosis of SFT is usually straightforward, some difficulties may occasionally arise mainly due to the wide morphological spectrum exhibited by this tumor. In the present paper we aimed to evaluate the unusual clinicopathological features in a series of 31 SFTs arising from parenchymal organs, superficial soft tissues and deep soft tissues. Our results emphasize that SFTs may occur anywhere, including unusual sites such as pe

Elastofibroma: management and surgical outcome.

Elastofibroma is a benign slow-growing neoplasm of soft tissues, originally defined Elastofibroma dorsi because of the typical localization in the connective tissue placed between the bottom corner of the scapula and the chest wall. From 1990 to 2013 at our center, 115 patients underwent elestofibroma surgical removal, including 2 bilateral and one relapsed. For all the patients ultrasound preoperative examination was requested, sometimes with a diagnosis of lipoma or fibrolipoma because of the rarity of this type of lesion and therefore the lack of experience of the radiologists. In all 115 p

Pleomorphic Liposarcoma: A Series of 120 Cases With Emphasis on Morphologic Variants.

Pleomorphic liposarcoma (PLPS) is a highly aggressive sarcoma comprising variable numbers of pleomorphic lipoblasts mixed with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS)-like areas. Morphologic variants, such as myxofibrosarcoma-like or epithelioid, may cause diagnostic confusion, especially on a core biopsy, but there are few data on the prognostic significance of these features. A total of 120 PLPS biopsies and resection specimens were reviewed and catalogued based on the presence of myxofibrosarcoma-like, UPS-like, and epithelioid foci, in 10% increments. The clinical parameters were collec

A case of long-term unchanged calcifying fibrous tumor.

A calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign tumor that may occur in any part of the body. We report the case of an asymptomatic 21-year-old woman with thoracic tumors. Chest computed tomography showed multiple masses in the left costophrenic angle. As we were unable to diagnose the tumor with a CT-guided needle biopsy, we performed a thoracoscopic biopsy. We found smooth multilobulated masses on the pleura and multiple small nodules around the main tumors. Partial resection of the tumor was performed by VATS. Histological examination revealed that the tumor had hypocellular fibroscleroti

Malignant transformation of fibrous dysplasia into angiosarcoma.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is generally considered to be a benign disease that affects the bones, but it has potential to become malignant over time, generally several decades after its initial diagnosis. Radiation therapy can induce malignant transformation of FD; however, reports have indicated a few cases of malignant transformation of FD in the absence of radiation therapy. Angiosarcoma is a particularly rare type of cancer in the oral region, which accounts for less than 1% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Herein, we reported a case of a 62-year-old man with monostotic FD of the left maxilla of o

Immunohistochemical investigations of tumors of supposed fibroblastic-histiocytic origin.

The aim of this study was to localize alpha 1-antitrypsin, ferritin, and lysozyme by means of the indirect immunoperoxidase technique and to evaluate the significance of these antigens as markers of histiocytic differentiation in tumors of a supposed dual fibroblastic-histiocytic origin. The series comprised 31 malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) of the pleomorphic, spindle cell, and myxoid types, four cutaneous fibrous histiocytomas, and four atypical fibroxanthomas, four dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, and two osteoclastomas of bone. For comparison, 15 soft tissue sarcomas of various othe

MRI of a microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the skin mimicking a fibrous tumour: case report and literature review.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the skin is a very rare malignant tumour arising from the sweat glands. As far as we know, the MRI features of this tumour have not been described in the literature before. In this report we present the MRI features and pathological description of a case of a microcystic adnexal carcinoma in the cheek that was incidentally imaged during brain MRI examination. A review of the relevant literature as well as a discussion of MRI of skin tumours is also presented.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the central nervous system: clinicopathological and therapeutic considerations of 18 cases.

OBJECTIVE: This is a retrospective study of 18 patients harboring a solitary fibrous tumor of the central nervous system. Therapeutic management and outcome were analyzed. METHODS: Between 1999 and 2004, 18 patients harboring central nervous system solitary fibrous tumors were surgically treated at our two institutions. There were nine men and nine women. The patient ages ranged from 33 to 75 years, with a median age of 56.1 years. The locations were spinal in six cases (33.3%), the posterior fossa in six cases (33.3%), supratentorial in four cases (22.2%), and orbital in two cases (11.2%).

Solitary fibrous tumor in the extremity: case report and review of the literature.

A solitary fibrous tumor is a relatively unusual neoplasm first described as a distinctive tumor arising from pleura. Some reports have shown that solitary fibrous tumors also affect extrathoracic regions. The current study presents a literature review with four additional patients with solitary fibrous tumor arising from the extremities to clarify clinicopathologic features. The current four patients were two males and two females, ranging from 17 to 60 years of age. Magnetic resonance imaging scans of the current patients showed inhomogeneous low to intermediate intensity signal on T1-weight

Solitary extrapleural fibrous tumor with hepatic bilobar metastases: multimodal approach treatment.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor is an unusual fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasm typically described in the pleura. It may appear anywhere with a varied anatomic distribution and essentially it can develop from any soft tissue or visceral location. Its course is usually indolent and it rarely causes distant metastases, so it has a prolonged survival rate. It sometimes presents itself as a disseminate disease being the liver the most frequently involved location. In these occasions, the management should be discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor committee formed by surgeons, oncologists and r

Thyroid regional metastasis from a giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the larynx in a patient with history of trichinellosis and tuberculosis.

Sarcomas represent less than 1% of malignant laryngeal tumors and giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytoma is exceptionally rare. Diagnosis is histologically based and immunohistochemistry allows differentiation from other fibro-histiocytic neoplasms. We present the case of a 53-year-old male patient with positive medical history for trichinellosis and tuberculosis, and a laryngeal tumor invading the thyroid and causing respiratory distress by airway obstruction. Total laryngectomy and thyroidectomy were performed followed by thyroxine replacement therapy and radiotherapy. Histologically, the

Mandibular Osteoma in a Haflinger Mare: Clinical and Pathological Features.

A 11-year-old, Haflinger breed mare developed a slowly growing mass, protruding on the ventral aspect of the mandible. On palpation, the lesion was pedunculated, very firm, cold and not painful. Radiographic examinations showed a radiopaque, multi-lobular, "mushroom-like" lesion, which arose from the mandibular cortex without involving the bone marrow cavity. Thereafter, the mass was excised for cosmetic purposes. Microscopically, the lesion mainly consisted of bone trabeculae, covered by a thick layer of connective tissue resembling the periosteum. History and clinical findings allowed the te

Brown tumor complicating end-stage kidney disease.

Longstanding, severe hyperparathyroidism (HPT) can lead to the formation of "brown tumors". A brown tumor is a radiolucent bone lesion that is locally destructive; it is not a neoplasm, but rather a stromal mass consisting of fibrous tissue, poorly mineralized woven bone, and supporting vasculature. These tumors are a rare complication of advanced primary or secondary HPT. We present a young female with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis with uncontrolled secondary HPT (SHPT). The patient presented with progressive lower extremity weakness and back pain. CT imaging showed multiple ly

Idiopathic desmoid-type fibromatosis of the pancreatic head: case report and literature review.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DTF) is an uncommon nonmetastatic fibrous neoplasm. Sporadic intraperitoneal DTF is rarely described in current literature. We herein report a case of DTF of unknown cause involving the pancreatic head. A 41-year-old man presented with recurrent epigastric pain and weight loss. An abdominal computed tomography scan showed a well-delineated solid cystic mass inside the pancreatic head. Pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed due to the patient's debilitating symptoms and suspected malignancy. The pathological examination revealed massive fibroblastic

Atypical lipoma, atypical intramuscular lipoma, and well differentiated retroperitoneal liposarcoma: a reappraisal of 30 cases formerly classified as well differentiated liposarcoma.

Thirty cases formerly diagnosed as Grade I lipogenic liposarcoma (well differentiated liposarcoma) were reviewed. The basic histologic pattern in all was that of adult fat modified by the presence of cells with enlarged, hyperchromatic nuclei; in most cases there was also a component of myxoid and/or fibrous tissue. The length of follow-up ranged from two to 30 years. Nine of the tumors were located in the subcutaneous layer. None of these recurred after excision, not even those which were simply "shelled out," and none metastasized. The term "atypical lipoma" is proposed for this group. Thirt

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma: Factors predictive of adverse outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) encompasses rare neoplasms that can arise either in the dermis or in the subfascial soft tissue. The behavior of UPS ranges from indolent to aggressive, but data predicting outcomes are limited. OBJECTIVE: Identify predictors of poor outcomes by analyzing a large collection of UPS cases. METHODS: We evaluated all available cases of UPS (including those termed atypical fibroxanthoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, pleomorphic dermal sarcoma, and subfascial UPS) across 3 tertiary care centers. RESULTS: Among the 319 patients, 45 experien

A dedifferentiated solitary fibrous tumor of the parotid gland: a case report with Cytopathologic findings and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a ubiquitous mesenchymal neoplasm but it rarely occurs in the parotid gland. The histological features are variable, with the majority having spindle cell morphology and non-specific branching (staghorn) ecstatic vascular pattern. SFT ranges from benign to overtly malignant. Dedifferentiation within SFTs represents an abrupt transition from a well-differentiated component to a high-grade area, the latter most often including poorly differentiated epithelioid/round cell or high-grade spindle cell morphology. To the best of our knowledge, dedifferentia

Role of MR imaging of uterine leiomyomas before and after embolization.

Leiomyoma, the most common uterine neoplasm, is composed of smooth muscle with varying amounts of fibrous connective tissue. Most leiomyomas are asymptomatic, but patients may present with abnormal uterine bleeding or bulk-related symptoms. Over the past decade, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) has been an effective minimally invasive treatment for symptomatic patients. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the most accurate imaging technique for detection and evaluation of leiomyomas and therefore has become the imaging modality of choice before and after UFE. As leiomyomas enlarge, they may o

Perianal Solitary Fibrous Tumor in a Rare Anatomical Presentation: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) account for <2% of all soft tissue tumors and are slow-growing neoplasms of mesenchymal origin, which have been reported in various locations. They are frequently observed at the pleura and a perianal location is extremely rare. They show no predisposition by sex, are mainly benign, and usually occur between the 5th and 7th decades of life. CASE REPORT We report the case of an 80-year-old man with no comorbidities except hypertension, who presented with an asymptomatic perineal mass. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a solid tumor measuring 3.5×2.5 cm
