[Circulating tumor cells in the diagnosis and treatment of early and advanced prostate cancer].

Circulating tumor cells (CTC) are tumor cells that escape from the primary or metastatic tumor into the circulatory system, and closely related to cancer metastasis. Since the samples can be obtained through simple and minimally invasive blood sampling operations, CTCs have a great clinical potential. PCa is one of the most common malignant tumors in men. In recent years, many scholars have conducted studies as to whether CTC technology can be used for the diagnosis and treatment of PCa, as well as for more accurate prediction of the risk of progression. This article summarizes the advances in

Occurrence of metachronous second primary cancer in head and neck cancer survivors: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth leading cancer worldwide with approximately 600,000 new cases per year. Several studies suggest that HNC survivors may have an increased risk of developing second primary cancers (SPCs). A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed aiming to quantify the overall and site-specific risk of metachronous SPCs in HNC survivors. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were searched to identify studies published until October 2019. Studies investigating the standardised incidence ratio (SIR) of metachronous SPC were included. A random-effe

Multifocal hepatoblastoma: What is the risk of recurrent disease in the remnant liver?

PURPOSE: Multifocal hepatoblastoma (HB) is often treated with total hepatectomy and transplantation owing to concerns of surgical resectability, local recurrence, and/or metachronous tumor in the remnant liver. We aimed to review HB patients to determine the risk of local recurrence in multifocal disease. METHODS: We undertook retrospective cohort analysis of all HB patients at a single tertiary referral center between 2001 and 2015. Demographics, diagnostic features, operative details, and outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: Sixty patients underwent surgical management of HB. 39 had unifocal,

Metachronous bilateral testicular seminoma developing after an interval of 31 years: case report and review of the literature.

Men diagnosed with testicular germ cell tumors are at higher risk for development of a second germ cell tumor in the contralateral testis. Metachronous bilateral testicular germ cell tumors usually occur within 5 years. Here, we report a case of a 63-year-old man previously diagnosed with testicular seminoma and treated with a left orchiectomy followed by radiation, developing contralateral testicular seminoma after an interval of 31 years. The patient was asymptomatic and found to have an enlarged, nontender right testis on routine urological examination. Further workup did not reveal evidenc

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the breast after cured bilateral breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the breast is a rare and aggressive neoplasm that constitutes approximately 0.1% of all breast carcinomas. Before the tumor can be classified as a true SCC of the breast, certain criteria need to be fulfilled. These are: i) more than 90% of the malignant cells must be of squamous cells origin; ii) tumor is independent from the overlying skin and nipple; iii) other sites of primary SCC have been excluded. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of pure SCC of the breast that arose 15 years after local radiation for a primary adenocarcinoma of the br

Bilateral breast cancers.

An increasingly large proportion of women with unilateral breast cancer are treated with bilateral mastectomy. The rationale behind bilateral surgery is to prevent a second primary breast cancer and thereby to avoid the resultant therapy and eliminate the risk of death from contralateral breast cancer. Bilateral mastectomy has been proposed to benefit women at high risk of contralateral cancer, such as carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, but for women without such mutations, the decision to remove the contralateral breast is controversial. It is important to evaluate the risk of contralater

Osteosarcoma arising from a haemangioma: case report and review of the literature.

To create awareness of the benign lesions from which osteosarcoma may arise. Osteosarcoma is a rare tumour of bone the etiology of which is poorly understood, but it may arise from benign lesions. Malignant transformation in hemangiomas, in the absence of prior radiation, is exceedingly rare and the resulting neoplasm is usually an angiosarcoma. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman where investigation for thigh pain revealed a distal femoral hemangioma. She represented with pain and mass 18 years later, leading to a confirmed diagnosis of osteosarcoma at the same site. Osteosarcomas may a

Breast angiosarcoma secondary to phyllodes tumour.

Angiosarcomas are rare malignant tumours that arise from endothelial cells lining vascular channels, representing 0.04% of malignant neoplasms of the breast. Breast angiosarcomas (BAs) were first described by Schmidt in 1887, and may be primary or secondary to the pre-existing conditions. Primary BAs are more common in young women and present as a palpable mass. Secondary BAs arise in older patients, frequently 5-6 years after radiotherapy, and present as a rash. The authors describe the case of an 83-year-old woman with no history of thoracic radiotherapy or surgery. She had been observ

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumor: a case report.

Malignant transformation of the epithelial component of Warthin's tumor is extremely rare. We describe our experience of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumor of the parotid gland in a 35 year old female. The tumor removed from the parotid region was well encapsulated and histologically comprised ofmucoepidermoid carcinoma along with areas of Warthin's tumor. The pathogenesis and differential diagnosis of this rare occurrence have been discussed.

Pilomyxoid astrocytoma in a patient with neurofibromatosis.

Pilomyxoid astrocytoma (PMA), a recently described variant of low-grade astrocytoma is associated with a high rate of recurrence and a propensity for CSF seeding. While cases of PMA have been reported in infants and young children, there has been no report of PMA in patients with neurofibromatosis. The first reportable case of PMA occurring in a child with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is described. Following presentation with obstructive hydrocephalus, the patient underwent a partial resection of a third ventricular tumor. Histology confirmed the typical features of PMA. The patient demonstr

[Bilateral testicular tumors recurring 31 years after the initial treatment: a case report and the literature review].

We herein report a case of bilateral testicular germ cell tumor recurring 31 years after right high inguinal orchiectomy. In 2003, a 62-year-old man presented with a mass in the left testis. Ultrasonography demonstrated three hypoechoic mass and microlithiasis of the left testis. Abdominal and breast computed tomography revealed no lymph adenopathy and any metastasis. The preoperative diagnosis was stage I testicular tumor and subsequently left high orchiectomy was performed. Histological examination revealed typical seminoma. At present, the patient is free from recurrence after the surgery.

Metachronous adenocarcinoma occurring at a colostomy site after abdominoperineal resection for rectal carcinoma.

Carcinomas rarely occur at the site of a colostomy. A 73-year-old man underwent abdominoperineal resection (Miles' surgical procedure) for rectal carcinoma in September 1988. He did not return to the hospital until September 1995, when he was admitted with stricture of the stoma. Neither tumor nor ulcer was detected at the stoma. The tip of the doctor's little finger was able to pass through the stoma, and manual expanding alleviated the stricture. The patient did not return to the hospital again until August 1996, at age 81 years, when he visited the hospital because of complete stricture of

Unusual multiple pilomatrixomata: case report and review of the literature.

Pilomatrixomata are rare, benign, calcifying cutaneous tumours of the hair matrix cells. They usually present in childhood with a pre-surgical diagnosis of sebaceous cyst, because of their size and appearance. The usual sites of occurrence are the scalp, head and neck. Treatment is usually surgical excision. We report a case of unusual, multiple, benign pilomatrixomata in an Indian adult. The plastic surgeon should be aware of the various guises of pilomatrixoma and be alert to the important, although rare, occurrence of malignancy.

Malignant melanoma developing from an intradermal nevus.

A 58-year-old man presented a black nodule with satellites located in the left upper region of the umbilicus. Clinical history and microscopic findings led us to diagnose it as a malignant melanoma developing from an intradermal nevus. Histopathologically, melanoma cells developed upward from the nest of the intradermal nevus and no junctional activity was shown. Cases of malignant melanoma arising from an intradermal nevus have rarely been reported. Moreover, previously reported cases showed melanoma cells beneath the intradermal nevus.

Progressive carcinoid heart disease after resection of primary ovarian carcinoid.

Primary ovarian carcinoid tumors are uncommon, and carcinoid heart disease is a rare complication. Although carcinoid syndrome and carcinoid heart disease typically occur in the setting of metastatic carcinoid tumor, particularly involving the liver, this is not necessarily the case in patients with primary ovarian carcinoid tumors. After surgical resection of an ovarian carcinoid tumor, the prognosis is excellent; however, carcinoid heart disease can continue to progress. The following is a case report of a patient who, despite having complete resection of a primary ovarian carcinoid tumor, w

Metastasis in the gallbladder: does literature reflect reality?

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the gallbladder (GBm) are rare and pose a unique diagnostic challenge because they can mimic a second primary tumor. This study aimed to gain insight into the clinicopathological and epidemiological characteristics of GBm. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed (literature cohort) and compared with a nationwide cohort of GBm patients diagnosed between 1999 and 2015 in the Netherlands, collected via two linked registries (population cohort). Overall survival (OS) was estimated by Kaplan-Meier. Hazard ratios were determined by a Cox proportional hazar

What is the most appropriate period to define synchronous cancers?

BACKGROUND: Studies about second primary cancers (SPC) incidence exclude a period following the first cancer diagnosis given the high probability of diagnosing another primary cancer during this phase (synchronous cancers). However, definition of synchronicity period varies widely, from one to six months, without clear epidemiological justification. The objective of this study was to determine the most appropriate synchronicity period. METHODS: Data from 13 French population-based cancer registries were used to establish a cohort of all patients diagnosed with a first cancer between 1989 and
