An intracranial dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is an uncommon acquired dural shunt between an artery and a vein without a parenchymal nidus. DAVF occlusion may be achieved using either endovascular or open surgical means. Combining both techniques is also frequently used in clinical practice. In this video, we present 3 patients with Borden type III, complex intracranial DAVFs. The first patient presented with intracranial hemorrhage and underwent a successful microsurgical obliteration of the fistula in the tentorium. Two other patients had DAVFs that were incidentally found. Both underwe

An autopsied case of arteriovenous aneurysm of the vein of Galen in a 31/2-month-old female is reported. Arteriovenous aneurysm of the vein of Galen is a rare vascular malformation of the central nervous system consisting of a saccular dilatation of the vein which receives blood shunted through enlarged arteries. These peculiar structural and hemodynamic characteristics differentiate this particular malformation from the other AVMs of the central nervous system. In infants the arteriovenous aneurysm of the vein of Galen is characterized clinically by hydrocephalus and cardiomegaly. In the pres

The Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations was used in a multivariate analysis to explore the associations between maternal occupation in industry and children born with central nervous system (CNS) or musculoskeletal or oral cleft malformations. Possible confounding factors were selected in preliminary screening of risk indicators for malformations. These factors included characteristics of the mother, the child, and the family; maternal illnesses; an maternal medication at the time of pregnancy. Tobacco smoking was a confounding factor for all type of malformations; number of children

In 102 out of 127 patients who had congenital malformations of the eye and the orbit these malformations were part of a syndrome. Only 11 patients had a single ocular anomaly without associated malformations. Of the remaining 116 patients, 69.3% had associated anomalies of the nervous system, 48% had associated malformations of the connective tissue, 25.6% had anomalies of the skin and its appendages, 23.6% had malformations of the visceral organs, especially the urinary and intestinal tracts, and 22% had cardiovascular malformations. Anomalies of the ears and the auricles were present in 21%.

Dural venous sinus ectasia belongs to a rare group of venous sinus malformations of unknown origin and uncertain prognosis. We report the first patient with idiopathic congenital ectasia of the confluence of sinuses with thrombosis associated with bilateral polymicrogyria. It may highlight the causative relation between ischemia within the central nervous system due to torcular herophili ectasia with thrombosis in early pregnancy and the development of cortical malformations in neonates. We also highlight the role of MR neuroimaging in the diagnosis of these entities.

On the basis of an analysis of 2398 autopsies of infants aged up to 1 year in 194 cases congenital anomalies of the central nervous system were found (8.1%). Most cases of these anomalies were noted in the group of newborns (85%) and the most frequent anomalies were: myelomeningocele (35.6%), multiple anomalies (20.1%), congenital hydrocephalus (17%), anencephaly (14.4%) and corpus callosum malformations (3.6%). Myelomeningocele, congenital hydrocephalus, anencephaly and true microcephaly were more frequent in girls, while multiple anomalies and corpus callosum malformations were more frequent

Central nervous system (CNS) malformations play a role in all fetal malformations. Ultrasonography (US) is the best screening method for identifying fetal CNS malformations. A good echographic study depends on several factors, such as positioning, fetal mobility and growth, the volume of amniotic fluid, the position of the placenta, the maternal wall, the quality of the apparatus, and the sonographer's experience. Although US is the modality of choice for routine prenatal follow-up because of its low cost, wide availability, safety, good sensitivity, and real-time capability, magnetic resonanc

Over the past two decades, the number of genetically defined autoinflammatory interferonopathies has steadily increased. Aicardi-Goutières syndrome and proteasome-associated autoinflammatory syndromes (PRAAS, also known as CANDLE) are caused by genetic defects that impair homeostatic intracellular nucleic acid and protein processing respectively. Research into these genetic defects revealed intracellular sensors that activate type I interferon production. In SAVI and COPA syndrome, genetic defects that cause chronic activation of the dinucleotide sensor stimulator of interferon genes (STING) s

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among infants. The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) occurs in 21% of cases.
OBJECTIVE: To identify incidence of CNS malformations and associated factors in newborns at a Terciary Hospital of Porto Alegre.
METHOD: Case-control study conducted between 2000 and 2005 based on the Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations database.
RESULTS: Among 26,588 births registered in this period, 3.67% presented with malformations (IC=95%; 3.44-3.9), being 0.36% of the CNS (IC=95%,(0.

The cross sectional study was done to estimate the prevalence of various congenital malformations among the patients delivered in Community Based Medical College Hospital (CBMCH), Mymensingh, Bangladesh and corresponding risk factors were also studied from July 2014 to December 2015. A total of 2560 babies who were born at Community Based Medical College Hospital (CBMCH) were enrolled in this study. The newborn babies were examined and assessed for detection of congenital malformation, system wise distribution and risk factors attributable. Out of total 2560 deliveries, 2548 were live births a

The computed tomography and MRI imaging findings in a case of pituitary duplication and epipharyngeal teratoma are described in a newborn baby girl with respiratory difficulties. Associated skull base and central nervous system malformations are presented. Teratoma diagnosis was confirmed by histology. The embryological pathogenesis is discussed.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a serious malformation of the central nervous system which occurs between the 18th and 28th day of gestation. HPE can appear in different manifestations within one family. The diagnosis of HPE can be performed in an early sonographic scan between the 12th and the 14th week of gestation, according to the guidelines for the examination of the foetal nervous system. The history of a pregnant woman with a previous birth of a foetus with cerebral malformation and having a partner with minor signs for HPE justifies an intensified sonographic examination and molecular analy

Acromelic frontonasal dysostosis (AFND; MIM #603671) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder caused by a heterozygous mutation in the ZSWIM6 (KIAA1577) gene located at chromosome 5q12.1. It is phenotypically characterized by frontonasal malformation with hypertelorism, telecanthus, nasal clefting or bifid nasal tip, wide fontanels and sutures, brachycephaly, and cleft palate. The patients also present with central nervous system malformations such as encephalocele, agenesis of the corpus callosum, or interhemispheric lipoma. Limb malformations can also be found, including preaxial polyda…

BACKGROUND: Hemangiopericytomas are rare vascular tumors of the central nervous system. Although hemangiopericytomas have been associated with other vascular malformations, there is no report of an intracranial hemangiopericytoma found in association with multiple arteriovenous malformations and dural arteriovenous fistulae.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of an otherwise healthy 25-year-old woman who presented with a large hemangiopericytoma involving the superior sagittal sinus. The highly vascular nature of the lesion, the total occlusion of the sinus anterior to the tumor, and the p
