[Treatment of brain ischemic stroke by co-transplantation of neural stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells].

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the feasibility of treating the brain ischemic stroke by the co-transplantation of the neural stem cells(NSCs) and the endothelial progenitor cells(EPCs). METHODS: The original biomedical articles concerned with the treatment of the brain ischemic therapy by the use of the NSCs and the EPCs were extensively reviewed as well as retrieved and analyzed. RESULTS: The review revealed that the NSCs and the EPCs could migrate to the injured area due to brain ischemic stroke, the environment of the local microcirculation could induce the neurogenesis and the vasculogenesis to r

Autonomic indexes during the vestibular-visual conflict exposure: a squirrel monkey study.

To assess the dynamic changes of the autonomic neural responses evoked by vestibular-visual conflict (VVC) in the squirrel monkey, we analyzed the changes of salivary amount and sodium concentration, and the coefficient of variance (CV) of R-R intervals (RRI) along the time course of VVC exposure given in pitch plane. The sodium concentration and the amount of saliva showed clear increases at the first and second 15 min stimulation periods. The CV of RRI was found to increase over the entire periods of stimulation, and there was a significant difference between the rest value and those in stim

Distinct EEG cue-reactivity profiles associated with virtual-reality treatment responses in methamphetamine use disorder.

Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is associated with abnormal neural cue-reactivity dynamics that contribute to craving and relapse vulnerability. Using electroencephalography (EEG), virtual reality (VR)-based cue exposure, and VR intervention, we examined Cue-Rest spectral modulation across addiction-related neural systems before and after treatment. Principal Component Analysis(PCA)-based subgrouping method identified two distinct EEG cue-reactivity profiles characterized by relatively higher versus lower Cue-Rest spectral modulation patterns. During VR-cue exposure, widespread abnormalitie

TMS provokes target-dependent intracranial rhythms across human cortical and subcortical sites.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is believed to alter ongoing neural activity and cause circuit-level changes in brain function. While the electrophysiological effects of TMS have been extensively studied with scalp electroencephalography (EEG), this approach generally evaluates low-frequency neural activity at the cortical surface. However, TMS can be safely used in patients with intracranial electrodes (iEEG), allowing for direct assessment of deeper and more localized oscillatory responses across the frequency spectrum. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Our study used iEEG to unders

Metabolic correlate of memory-deficit awareness in dementia with Lewy bodies: Implication in cortical midline structure.

The neural substrate of memory-deficit awareness has been studied in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, little is known about that in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). To determine the neural substrates of memory-deficit awareness in DLB, we investigated the relationship between awareness of memory-deficit and glucose metabolism in DLB. Thirty-four patients with DLB were assessed by 18F-FDG-PET and dopamine transporter (DAT)-SPECT. The awareness was evaluated using an awareness index that represents the discrepancy between objective and subjective memory scores. Th

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome: NIPBL haploinsufficiency downregulates canonical Wnt pathway in zebrafish embryos and patients fibroblasts.

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome is a severe genetic disorder characterized by malformations affecting multiple systems, with a common feature of severe mental retardation. Genetic variants within four genes (NIPBL (Nipped-B-like), SMC1A, SMC3, and HDAC8) are believed to be responsible for the majority of cases; all these genes encode proteins that are part of the 'cohesin complex'. Cohesins exhibit two temporally separated major roles in cells: one controlling the cell cycle and the other involved in regulating the gene expression. The present study focuses on the role of the zebrafish nipblb paral

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening: benefits, risks, and costs.

Based upon previously published reports, the benefits and risks of screening a hypothetical population of 10,000 women are analyzed, and the cost benefit of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening is reviewed. Five hundred women would have an initially elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein and experience moderately severe anxiety until further tests are completed. One hundred fifty pregnancies would undergo amniocentesis with approximately one spontaneous abortion resulting from the procedure. Fifty sets of twins, 86 pregnancies with underestimated gestational age, and 50 pregnancies at risk for

Spatiotemporal analysis of 3D human iPSC-derived neural networks using a 3D multi-electrode array.

While there is a growing appreciation of three-dimensional (3D) neural tissues (i.e., hydrogel-based, organoids, and spheroids), shown to improve cellular health and network activity to mirror brain-like activity in vivo, functional assessment using current electrophysiology techniques (e.g., planar multi-electrode arrays or patch clamp) has been technically challenging and limited to surface measurements at the bottom or top of the 3D tissue. As next-generation MEAs, specifically 3D MEAs, are being developed to increase the spatial precision across all three dimensions (X, Y, Z), development

MRI assessment of intrinsic neural timescales in male alcohol use disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic, relapsing condition marked by compulsive drinking, imposing a significant burden on both the individual and their environment. The intrinsic neural timescale (INT) is determined through the assessment of autocorrelation of the brain activity in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, serving to elucidate the diversity of neural timescales. METHOD: This study involved 55 alcohol-dependent patients and 33 non-drinking healthy controls (HCs) matched for age, sex, and hand-use habits. We calculated the INT by evaluating the strengt

Alterations in brain spatiotemporal autocorrelation and functional connectivity in lifelong premature ejaculation: A resting-state fMRI study.

Spatial and temporal autocorrelation, as low-dimensional statistical properties, account for a substantial portion of variance in complex functional brain network topology, thereby providing a method for understanding the architecture of brain functional organization in specific populations. In this study, we investigated lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) by analyzing spatiotemporal autocorrelation and observed increased temporal autocorrelation in the right thalamus, left prefrontal cortex, and left somatomotor cortex, which may reflect abnormal neural signal persistence. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis and CIBERSORT screening of key genes related to m6A methylation in Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a neural crest disease that results from the failure of enteric neural crest cells (ENCCs) to migrate to the corresponding intestinal segment. The RET gene, which regulates enteric neural crest cell proliferation and migration, is considered one of the main risk factors for HSCR and is commonly used to construct HSCR mouse models. The epigenetic mechanism of m6A modification is involved in HSCR. In this study, we analyzed the GEO database (GSE103070) for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and focused on m6A-related genes. Comparing the RNA-seq data of Wide T

The effect of visual parameters on neural activation during nonsymbolic number comparison and its relation to math competency.

Nonsymbolic numerical comparison task performance (whereby a participant judges which of two groups of objects is numerically larger) is thought to index the efficiency of neural systems supporting numerical magnitude perception, and performance on such tasks has been related to individual differences in math competency. However, a growing body of research suggests task performance is heavily influenced by visual parameters of the stimuli (e.g. surface area and dot size of object sets) such that the correlation with math is driven by performance on trials in which number is incongruent with vi
