Loss or impairment of bladder function is a common effect of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and can be detrimental to a patient's quality of life. Poor bladder management can cause Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), which can, in some cases, lead to death. Therefore, bladder management is of primary importance for those living with SCI.This paper presents a method for extracting information about the bladder pressure from Electroneurogram (ENG) recordings from an ewe's extra-dural sacral roots (S1-S3) using a cross-correlation algorithm between adjacent channels of multichannel book electrodes. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) is the most prevalent hereditary neuropathy worldwide and classically has slow nerve conduction velocity (NCV), in most cases below 38 m/s. Two unrelated patients with motor NCVs in the upper limbs above 38 m/s are reported.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: Two genetically confirmed CMT1A patients are presented, from two unrelated families (one of British origin and the other of Brazilian origin). Both individuals had upper limb motor NCVs above 38 m/s, with values ranging from 41.9 to 45 m/s in the median nerve and from 42 to

Electrodiagnostic studies (EDx) are frequently performed in the diagnostic evaluation of peripheral nerve disorders. There is increasing interest in the use of newer, alternative diagnostic modalities, in particular imaging, either to complement or replace established EDx protocols. However, the evidence to support this approach has not been expansively reviewed. In this paper, diagnostic performance data from studies of EDx and other diagnostic modalities in common peripheral nerve disorders have been analyzed and described, with a focus on radiculopathy, plexopathy, compressive neuropathies,

Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) is a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), characterized by acute areflexic flaccid quadriparesis with motor axonal changes and absence of demyelinating findings in electrophysiological studies. A 30-year-old man presented with acute onset flaccid type of weakness involving all four limbs, along with drooping of eyelids. Examination revealed ptosis with restricted horizontal and vertical eye movements. Spinomotor system examination revealed acute flaccid areflexic quadriparesis. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) showed features suggestive of motor axonal n

Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes that affects up to 50% of patients during the course of the disease; 20-30% of the patients also develop neuropathic pain. The mechanisms underlying neuropathy are not known in detail, but both metabolic and vascular factors may contribute to the development of neuropathy. The development of the most common type of neuropathy is insidious, often starting distally in the toes and feet and gradually ascending up the leg and later also involving fingers and hands. The symptoms are mainly sensory with either sensory loss or positive symptoms

Objective. The diagnosis of nerve disorders in humans has relied heavily on the measurement of electrical signals from nerves or muscles in response to electrical stimuli applied at appropriate locations on the body surface. The present study investigated the demyelinating subtype of Guillain-Barré syndrome using multiscale computational model simulations to verify how demyelination of peripheral axons may affect plantar flexion torque as well as the ongoing electromyogram (EMG) during voluntary isometric or isotonic contractions.Approach.Changes in axonal conduction velocities, mimicking those

OBJECTIVES: Electrophysiology plays a crucial role in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) diagnosis and subtype classification. The aim of our study was to assess the potential role of distal compound muscle action potential (dCMAP) for early differentiation between acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) and axonal GBS.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 24 subjects with AIDP and 18 subjects with axonal GBS. We built up receiver operating characteristic curves for total dCMAP duration and negative phase of dCMAP duration, in order to derive cut-off values ab

Leprosy is still a prevalent disease in Brazil, representing 93% of all occurrences in the Americas. Leprosy neuropathy is one of the most worrying manifestations of the disease. Acute neuropathy usually occurs during reaction episodes and is called neuritis. Twenty-two leprosy patients were included in this study. These patients had neural pain associated with ulnar sensory neuropathy, with or without adjunct motor involvement. The neurological picture began within thirty days of the clinical evaluation. The patients underwent a nerve conduction study and the demyelinating findings confirmed

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) is related to PMP22 gene duplication. It is characterized at electrodiagnostic testing (EDX) by diffuse homogeneous signs of demyelination, such as velocity slowing and prolonged distal latencies. These abnormalities are less pronounced in infants under two years old, and the possibility of normal nerve conduction studies (NCS) in infants with CMT1A under one year of age has been questioned. We report three infants who displayed normal or almost normal NCS. EDX abnormalities in CMT1A patients may therefore appear late during development. This may aff

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The purpose of this literature review is to develop an evidence-based guideline for the use of neuromuscular ultrasound in the diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). The proposed research question was: "In patients with suspected UNE, does ulnar nerve enlargement as measured with ultrasound accurately identify those patients with UNE?"
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed, and studies were classified according to American Academy of Neurology criteria for rating articles for diagnostic accuracy.
RESULTS: Based on Class I evidence in four

Electrical stimulation can be used to modulate activity within the nervous system in one of two modes: (1) Activation, where activity is added to the neural signalling pathways, or (2) Block, where activity in the nerve is reduced or eliminated. In principle, electrical nerve conduction block has many attractive properties compared to pharmaceutical or surgical interventions. These include reversibility, localization, and tunability for nerve caliber and type. However, methods to effect electrical nerve block are relatively new. Some methods can have associated drawbacks, such as the need for

BACKGROUND: Confirmatory methods such as electrodiagnostic testing (EDX) and ultrasonography (US) are currently used to support a clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Scientific consensus long has preferred nerve conduction studies (NCS); however, recent studies have advocated for a diagnostic niche for ultrasound examination. This study seeks to compare diagnostic accuracies, sensitivity, and specificity between these 2 diagnostic tools.
METHODS: An institutional database was retrospectively analyzed to reveal 402 upper extremity cases (265 patients) with potential for CTS dia

It is common belief that axonal neuropathies are characterized by simple axonal degeneration and loss and that the electrophysiological correlates are just reduced compound muscle action potential and sensory nerve action potential amplitudes with normal or slightly slow conduction velocity. However, axonal autoimmune neuropathies with involvement of the nodal region and axonal neuropathies due to energy restriction such as occurring in nerve ischemia, thiamine deficiency, critical illness, and mitochondrial disorders present conduction failure that can be either reversible with prompt recover

Background: The utility of nerve conduction studies (NCS) for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) has continued to be a subject of debate. Proponents of NCS assume a high sensitivity and specificity; however, many are unaware of the actual literature on this topic and the cutoff values commonly used for diagnosis. The purpose of this systematic review of the literature is to report the sensitivity and specificity of NCS for diagnosis of CTS in various studies. Methods: A literature review of PubMed and EMBASE databases was performed for all articles on NCS for diagnosis of CTS. The outco
