Insights into the Genomic Potential of a Methylocystis sp. from Amazonian Floodplain Sediments.

Although floodplains are recognized as important sources of methane (CH4) in the Amazon basin, little is known about the role of methanotrop … aldehyde assimilation through the serine pathway. Furthermore, the complete set of genes related to nitrogen fixation is also present in the Core. Interestingly, the MAG singleton cluster revealed the presence of unique genes related to nitrogen metabolism and cell motility. The study sheds light on the genomic characteristics of a dominant, but as yet unexplored m …

Community composition and functional genes explain different ecological roles of heterotrophic bacteria attached to two bloom-forming cyanobacterial genera.

Eutrophication leads to frequent outbreaks of cyanobacterial blooms, however, the effect of heterotrophic bacteria attached to cyanobacterial cells is unclear. Field investigations were carried out to gain a deeper understanding of the community composition and functional role of heterotrophic bacteria attached to Dolichospermum and Microcystins cells. The significantly positive relationships between Dolichospermum density and total nitrogen (TN) and between Microcystins density and particle nitrogen (PN) indicated the strong nitrogen (N) demand of these two species. The lack of functional gen

How to develop nature-based solutions for revegetation on abandoned farmland in the Loess Plateau of China?

Adequate revegetation of abandoned farmland acts as a defence against desertification and soil loss, and can help remove carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby playing an important role in regulating regional climate change. Legume, a nitrogen-fixation species, which could effectively improve vegetation coverage to control soil erosion, was widely used for revegetation. However, the dynamics of soil and plant development after legume introduction on abandoned farmland remain unclear. A 16-year in situ experiment including three treatments, natural abandonment (fallow), planting of alfalfa (

Partial manure substitution mitigates nitrogen environmental loss and improves maize yield via reconfiguring rhizosphere-bulk soil microbial functional differentiation.

Fertilization and rhizosphere effects co-regulate soil N cycling and bacterial succession, with mechanistic understanding being key to improving crop yield and N transformation in intensive farmland. Based on a 16-year field experiment, six fertilization treatments with urea (U) and manure (M) alone or in combination (CK, U200, U100, M200, M100, and U100M100; subscript numbers denote nitrogen application rates in kg N ha-1) were established to clarify the responses of bacterial communities in two components (bulk and rhizosphere) and their associations with N dynamics and maize yield. Improving nutrient fixation and dry matter content of an ammonium-rich anaerobic digestion effluent by struvite formation and clay adsorption.

The anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic wastes that contain nitrogen leads to its mineralization, yielding a digestate rich in ammonium (NH(4)(+)), an important fertilizing nutrient. The applicability of AD digestate as fertilizer can be improved by fixating the nutrients and increasing its dry matter content. Methods for the fixation and recovery of the digestate's NH(4)(+) and possible also PO(4)(3-) include struvite precipitation and adsorption in clay materials such as bentonite. These techniques were tested in batch experiments employing the liquid fraction of a digestate originating from

Wildfire-Altered Soil Water-Extractable Organic Matter Drives Divergent Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Anaerobic Subsurface Soils.

Intensifying global climate change has increased wildfire frequency. Wildfire-altered soil water-extractable organic matter (burned-WEOM) is hydrologically transported to unburned areas, profoundly affecting cross-ecosystem carbon-nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Taking soils from unburned subtropical forests as the research object, this study combined anaerobic incubation with high-resolution mass spectrometry and metagenomic sequencing to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of burned-WEOM on soil GHG emissions under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that burned-WEO

Fe(Ⅱ)-mediated detoxification mitigates low-dose rare earth elements-induced stress on anammox consortia for mining tailwater treatment.

Rare earth mining activities cause severe nitrogen pollution in watersheds, yet the residual hazardous rare earth elements (REEs) toxicity in tailings wastewater challenges biological nitrogen removal technology. This work demonstrated that introducing low-dose Fe(II) into partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) system significantly alleviated REEs-induced stress on anammox consortia via detoxification and physical barrier reinforcement. The PD/A bioreactor with 15 mg/L Fe(II) (R1) was compared against a control without Fe(II) for real rare earth tailings wastewater treatment. Metagenomic analy

Alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotroph community assembly and enhances putative recruitment of diazotrophs from legume soils to sedge soils.

INTRODUCTION: Biological nitrogen fixation is a key microbial process sustaining nutrient cycling and plant productivity in nitrogen-limited alpine meadows. However, how alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotrophic community composition and assembly across different plant species, and how these changes relate to aboveground biomass, remain poorly understood. METHODS: We used the nifH gene as a molecular marker to investigate diazotrophic communities in rhizosphere and bulk soils associated with the legume Oxytropis ochrocephala, and the sedge Carex alatauensis in undegraded and degraded al…

Phosphorus as a key to unlock the potential of hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria for ammonium recovery from mining wastewater into microbial protein.

Rare earth wastewater with high concentrations of NH4+-N poses serious environmental challenges. Conventional treatment converts NH4+-N into N2, leading to nitrogen resources loss. This study proposes a hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB)-based strategy to convert NH4+-N in real wastewater into microbial protein (MP). Based on the finding that HOB growth was inhibited in real wastewater, the effects of excess (S, Ca) and deficient (Mg, K, P) elements were investigated. P deficiency, rather than excess S/Ca or Mg/K deficiency, was identified as the primary factor limiting HOB performance. P addit

Artificial light pollution alters epilithic microbial communities and functional biodeterioration-related functional potentials in subterranean sandstone environments.

Artificial light pollution represents an important anthropogenic disturbance in subterranean heritage environments, yet its associations wit … ic shifts: artificial light enhanced assimilatory nitrogen and sulfur metabolism, sunlight promoted nitrogen fixation, and darkness favored nitrification, denitrification, and sulfur oxidation. However, bacterial community patterns were also associated with temperature, humidity, pH, and soluble salts, indicating that the observed differentiation reflected the comb …

Bacillus and related genera in sustainable agriculture and their effectiveness for soil health.

Rising global demand for food has led to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, increasing yields but damaging soils, biodiversity, and microbial communities. Alternatives such as the application of beneficial bacteria could restore diminished soil health and maintain productivity without these long-term costs. Bacillus species and related genera, such as Paenibacillus and Priestia, combine several useful traits, including phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, production of growth hormones, enzyme release, and generation of antimicrobial compounds. These abilities improv…

Legume-microbiome interactions unlock mineral nutrients in regrowing tropical forests.

Legume trees form an abundant and functionally important component of tropical forests worldwide with N2-fixing symbioses linked to enhanced growth and recruitment in early secondary succession. However, it remains unclear how N2-fixers meet the high demands for inorganic nutrients imposed by rapid biomass accumulation on nutrient-poor tropical soils. Here, we show that N2-fixing trees in secondary Neotropical forests triggered twofold higher in situ weathering of fresh primary silicates compared to non-N2-fixing trees and induced locally enhanced nutrient cycling by the soil microbiome commun

Nature of phosphorus limitation in the ultraoligotrophic eastern Mediterranean.

Phosphate addition to surface waters of the ultraoligotrophic, phosphorus-starved eastern Mediterranean in a Lagrangian experiment caused unexpected ecosystem responses. The system exhibited a decline in chlorophyll and an increase in bacterial production and copepod egg abundance. Although nitrogen and phosphorus colimitation hindered phytoplankton growth, phosphorous may have been transferred through the microbial food web to copepods via two, not mutually exclusive, pathways: (i) bypass of the phytoplankton compartment by phosphorus uptake in heterotrophic bacteria and (ii) tunnelling, wher

The effect of nitrogen nutrition on cluster root formation and proton extrusion by Lupinus albus.

Nitrogen nutrition can influence cluster root formation in many wild species, but the effect of N form on cluster root formation and root exudation by white lupin is not known. In a solution culture study, we examined the effect of N nutrition (ammonium, nitrate, both or N2 fixation) on cluster root formation and H+ extrusion by white lupin plants under deficient and adequate P supply. The number of cluster roots increased greatly when plants were supplied with I microM P compared with 50 microM P, the increase being 7.8-fold for plants treated with (NH4)2SO4, 3-fold for plants treated with KN

Network-scale spatiotemporal dynamics and drivers of nitrogen-cycling genes and their microbial hosts in a multi-tributary mountain river.

Rivers are critical regulators of the global nitrogen (N) cycle, yet their microbial nitrogen-cycling dynamics and feedbacks to environmental change remain poorly understood at the river-network scale. Here, we combined systematic field sampling at 187 water-column sites spanning two mainstems and 22 tributaries of the upper Hanjiang River with shotgun metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and 30 environmental variables representing geography, climate, hydromorphology, land use, and water quality. Our results showed that nitrogen-cycling genes (NCGs) mediating six major pathways showed clear longi
