Historically, nitrite has been a component of meat-curing additives for several centuries. In recent years the safety of nitrite as an additive in cured meats has been questioned mainly because of the possible formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. Nitrite has many important functions in meat curing including its role in color development, flavor, antioxidant properties, and antimicrobial activity. The effect of the diuretic drug furosemide on two-stage urinary bladder carcinogenesis in F344 rats initiated by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)nitrosamine (BBN) was investigated with regard to possible promoting activity. BBN was administered at 2 doses, 0.01 or 0.05%, in drinking water for 4 wk, and thereafter furosemide was given by gavage 3 times weekly for 32 wk, 250 mg/kg body weight. Buffalo strain male and female rats 12 weeks of age ingested 0.0114% dimethylnitrosamine in a semisynthetic diet for 12 weeks. Hepatic vein thrombosis developed along with focal fibrosis of the liver in female rats. Male rats had focal hepatic fibrosis, but not thrombosis of hepatic veins. A high incidence of hepatic vein thrombosis has been observed previously in Buffalo strain rats given carbon tetrachloride and methylcholanthrene simultaneously.

PURPOSE: To investigate the performance of a combined nasal midturbinate- and oropharyngeal (NAOP) self-swab compared to a deep oropharyngeal (OP) swab by health care workers (HCW) in detecting SARS-CoV-2 in a real-life setting.
METHODS: Paired swabs from 1119 participants were included. RT-PCR were used to detect SARS-CoV-2 in both swab samples.
RESULTS: 330 participants tested positive. The sensitivity of the combined self-swab and OP swab was 96.9 % and 95.4 % respectively, whereas the Ct-values for self-swabs were significantly lower compared to OP swabs.
