Pre-operative vitamin B infusion and prevention of nitrous oxide-induced homocysteine increase.

Nitrous oxide inactivates vitamin B(12) with detrimental consequences for folate and methionine metabolism, detectable by an increase in total plasma homocysteine. We hypothesised that a pre-operative vitamin B(12) and folate infusion prevents nitrous oxide-induced homocysteine increase. Sixty-three healthy patients having elective surgery were randomly allocated to receive either B-vitamin plus nitrous oxide; placebo plus nitrous oxide or placebo plus air. Fifty-nine patients completed the study. After intravenous B-vitamin infusion, plasma vitamin B(12) and folate concentrations increased 35

[Changes in vital functions in endoscopic interventions by various anesthesia and ventilation conditions].

Three different mixed anaesthesias were compared and monitored as for the behaviour of vital functions (heart frequency, RR, ECG, respiration, pO2tc, blood gases) during endoscopy of the air passages in 3 patient groups (n = 36), using one complex measuring set-up. Hypertonic blood pressure rises and increase in the heart frequency were regularly demonstrated in all methods of anaesthesia. Initial cardiac depression with a drop of frequency and blood pressure was observed for the first time within the first minute after the injection of Hexobarbital or Radenarcon in 70 per cent of the cases. [Toxicologic and nutritional aspects of nitrates and nitrites].

The toxic action of nitrates and nitrites has often been summarized by methemoglobinemia and nitrosation of amines inducing carcinogenic effects; these two impacts are spectacular, but they hide varying more or less insidious actions recently studied and perceived. In the NO3/NO2 couple, it is accepted that especially nitrite ion lays down a toxicological problem, probably because of its particular chemical reactivity: nitrite ion, which is the base of nitrous acid HNO2 (pKa = 3.36) can react with many functional groups from dietary or endogenous origin; it is also a reducing agent, only oxida…

Feed Efficiency Classification in Confined Texel Ewe Lambs: Relationships with Ruminal Fermentation, Nitrogen Metabolism, and Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Feed efficiency classification based on residual feed intake (RFI) and residual intake and gain (RIG) is widely used to identify biologically efficient animals, yet it remains unclear whether this classification reflects consistent differences in digestive, fermentative, and metabolic processes. This study evaluated the effects of RFI and RIG classification on nutrient intake, apparent digestibility, ruminal fermentation, nitrogen metabolism, microbial protein synthesis, and gaseous emissions in confined lambs. Thirty-eight weaned Texel ewe lambs underwent a 60-day performance test using an au

Relationships among nitrous oxide exposure, neurological injury and biomarkers.

AIMS: Recreational nitrous oxide (N2O) misuse is an increasing public health problem associated with functional cobalamin (B12) deficiency and severe neurological complications. Despite growing recognition of its harms, the dose-response relationship and clinical value of biomarkers remain unclear. This study aimed to characterize the demographics, patterns of use, outcomes, and biomarker utility in patients hospitalized with N2O toxicity, as well as to examine the relationship between exposure and toxicity. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included hospitalized individuals with N2O t

Cobalamin Deficiency in Children and Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease.

Background/Objective: Cobalamin (B12) deficiency is reported in 18% of adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) and only 10% without SCD; limited data are available on children. Diagnosing B12 deficiency is challenging given the lack of an established gold standard method of assessment and the unique renal features of SCD. B12 metabolism can be impacted by the clinical use of nitrous oxide gas (N2O), which is a standard therapy for SCD pain in some European countries. In response to emerging reports of neurologic sequalae in patients with SCD receiving N2O, we evaluated the prevalence of B12 defi

Summertime surface ozone (O3) and related secondary formation of fine particles are the major air quality concerns in the megacity of Shangh … total PM2.5, which is strongly facilitated by solar radiation in summer. According to our results, nitrous acid (HONO) is the major precursor of hydroxyl radicals (OH) accounting for 40% to 80% of the total OH production during daytime. A significant correlation is found between the HONO levels in the early morning and the daily O3 and PM2.5 levels. The summe …

Interaction of nitric oxide with photoexcited rose bengal: evidence for one-electron reduction of nitric oxide to nitroxyl anion.

The interaction of nitric oxide (.NO) with Rose Bengal (RB) in the presence of electron donors was investigated. Upon illumination of a mixture of RB and .NO with visible light, an enhancement in the rate of .NO consumption was observed that increased with increasing RB concentration. In the presence of electron donors (NADH, glutathione, or ascorbate), the rates of .NO depletion increased further. NADH enhanced .NO depletion to a greater extent than either glutathione or ascorbate. Photoactivated RB under anaerobic conditions reacts with NADH to form the RB anion radical (RB.-), which has a c

Effect of non-carbonic acidosis on total splanchnic perfusion and cardiac output during anaesthesia with O2-N2O-barbiturate-relaxant.

Seven dogs were anaesthetized using mebumal natrium-O2-N2O-gallamonijdidum. The PaCO2 was kept at a constant level by means of mechanical ventilation, and non-carbonic acidosis was induced with HCl infusion (0.3 normal). The arterial pH varied from 7.45 to 6.88. During this acidosis, a rising arterio-venous oxygen difference was observed, with an unchanged total oxygen consumption. The pulse fell, but the mean pressures in the right atrium and aorta were unchanged. The peripheral resistance rose by 50%, whereas the fall in cardiac output of 20% was non-significant (0.10 greater than P greater

Comparative effect of pethidine, trichloroethylene, and Entonox on fetal and neonatal acid-base and PO2.

The second stage of labour is associated with relative fetal hypoxia and progressive metabolic acidosis. Maternal analgesia can increase the danger, especially for the high-risk fetus. In 152 patients the effect on the fetus of pethidine alone, pethidine + trichloroethylene, or pethidine + Entonox was assessed by fetal scalp blood sampling. Fetal pH, Pco(2), and Po(2) were measured and base excess was calculated. Capillary samples were also taken 45 to 60 minutes after birth in 88 of the babies to estimate the rate of neonatal recovery.Entonox proved safer than trichloroethylene, and babies tre

Genotypic Variation in Rice Root Exudates Controls Biological Nitrification Inhibition Efficiency in the Rhizosphere.

Nitrification in agricultural soils drives significant nitrogen fertiliser losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, particularly in intensively fertilised rice systems. Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI), mediated by plant-derived compounds, offers a promising nature-based strategy to mitigate these losses, but the factors controlling BNI potential remain poorly understood. In this study, BNI mechanisms across five rice genotypes were investigated by combining plant physiology, soil nitrification dynamics and exudate metabolomics. Nitrifier suppression was strongest in the rhizosphere

Sulfur disproportionation in engineered environmental systems: A critical review of mechanisms, applications, and emerging perspectives.

Sulfur disproportionation (SDP), a microbial metabolism that couples the oxidation and reduction of intermediate-valence sulfur compounds, is increasingly recognized as a key process in both natural sulfur cycling and engineered environmental systems. Despite growing interest, our understanding of SDP remains incomplete, and its practical significance has often been overlooked. This critical review integrates recent advances in ecophysiology, molecular mechanisms, and reactor-scale applications to establish a unified framework and provide practical guiding principles for SDP. We first summariz

Understanding Neuropathy Features in the Context of Nitrous Oxide Abuse: A Combined Electrophysiological and Metabolic Approach.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of neurological complications associated with nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse, including N2O-induced myelopathy and neuropathy, has risen in the past decade. N2O-induced neuropathy often presents as a subacute axonal pathology; however, demyelinating patterns mimicking Guillain-Barré syndrome have also been observed. This study explores the metabolic pathophysiology of N2O-induced neuropathy, focusing on the alteration in metabolism to provide a deeper understanding of the biochemical pathways influencing the diverse electrophysiological patterns observed. METHODS: We cond

The effect of age on glucose and energy metabolism in brain cortex of rats.

It is well documented that the mature human brain oxidizes only glucose to obtain energy under physiological, nonstarved conditions. Through adulthood to the beginning of senescence, the balance between oxygen and glucose consumption of the brain was found to be unchanged as the basis for energy production. Beyond the age of 70 yr, however, cerebral glucose consumption appears to decrease. In the present study, the effect of advancing age on glucose and energy metabolism in brain cortex of rats was investigated. The study was carried out in male Wistar rats, 6 (young adult), 12 (adult), 24 and

Blood flow to the human uterus during maternal metabolic acidosis.

Uterine blood flow and metabolism were estimated at cesarean section under general anesthesia in pregnant women at term with the use of the Fick principle with nitrous oxide as the test material. Observations were made without superimposed maternal metabolic acidosis and during the infusion of ammonium chloride. Increasing maternal metabolic acidosis was accompanied by a decreasing rate of blood flow in the uterine circulation. There were no statistically significant differences in the metabolic rate of the uterus and its contents during maternal metabolic acidosis induced by the infusion of a

Elucidating the relevance of high temperature and elevated CO2 in plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) production.

Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) are plant products that are discontinuously distributed throughout the plant kingdom. These secondary compounds have various chemical groups and are named according to their chemical constituents. For their ability to defend biotic and abiotic stresses they are considered as plants' defensive compounds. These metabolites take part in plant protection from insects, herbivores, and extreme environmental conditions. They are indirectly involved in plants' growth and development. Secondary metabolites are also used by people in the form of medicines, pharmaceutic
