The effects of electronic cigarette smoking on retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell layer, inner plexiform layer, and choroidal thickness.

PURPOSE: To compare the thickness of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), inner plexiform layer (IPL), and choroid in healthy electronic cigarette smokers and non-smokers using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). MATERIAL AND METHOD: 25 healthy electronic cigarette smokers and 25 age- and gender-matched healthy non-smokers were included in the study. RNFL, GCL, IPL and choroidal thickness were measured by SD-OCT using an automated programme. After normality tests, an independent sample t-test was used to analyse the differences in RNFL, GCL, IPL,…

Concurrent effect of noise exposure and smoking on extended high-frequency pure-tone thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Concurrent effect of noise and smoking on hearing loss is a recent concern. In this study, the concurrent effect of noise and smoking on hearing loss in conventional frequencies and frequencies higher than 8 kHz was assessed. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study on workers exposed to noise who were divided into two groups: smokers and non-smokers. Hearing thresholds were assessed by conventional audiometry, and HFA. Data were analysed using non-parametric tests and Student's t-test. STUDY SAMPLE: There were 212 workers. RESULTS: Ninety-seven subjects were smokers and 115 indi…

Increased frequency of micronuclei in B and T8 lymphocytes from smokers.

The frequency of micronuclei was measured in peripheral B lymphocytes and some T lymphocyte subpopulations from 5 medium-tar cigarette smokers, and 5 non-smokers with no regular exposure to tobacco smoke. The peripheral lymphocytes were stimulated in vitro with phytohemagglutinin and B lymphocytes and the various T lymphocyte subsets were classified by a recently developed MAC (Morphology, Antibody, Chromosomes) method which allows the immunologic identification of different cell lineages. An increased frequency of micronuclei was observed in B and especially in the suppressor/cytotoxic T8 lym…

Does smoking affect the outcomes of lumbar decompression surgery?

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar decompressions and micro-discectomies are commonly performed non-complex spinal surgeries that do not involve the inser … scectomy or a micro-decompression. RESULTS: We found no statistical difference between smokers and non-smokers in the outcomes of lumbar decompression surgery. Both groups improved equally and significantly in terms of back pain, leg pain and functions. Out of 143 patients, only 2% more non-smokers had improved leg pain compared to smokers, 1% less non-smoke …

Cigarette smoking and psychophysiological stress responsiveness: effects of recent smoking and temporary abstinence.

Studies comparing the cardiovascular function and stress responsiveness of regular smokers and non-smokers have produced mixed results, possibly because of variable intervals between stress tests and recency of smoking. This experiment compared the cardiovascular, cortisol and affective responses to a problem solving task of non-smoking young men (n = 16) and regular smokers randomised to overnight abstinence (n = 14) and smoking 30 min prior to testing (n = 19). Smoking status was validated biochemically. Overnight abstinence was associated with reduced diastolic blood pressure at rest and wi…

Increased local matrix metalloproteinase-8 expression in the periodontal connective tissues of smokers with periodontal disease.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 has been associated with the progression of periodontitis, a common inflammatory disease of the supporting structures of the teeth, and with other degradative diseases. Tobacco smokers are at high risk of developing periodontitis that may progress more rapidly and respond poorly to treatment. Therefore, MMP-8 expression was determined by immunofluorescence staining in 60 random, computer-selected fields in the excised periodontal tissues of smokers and non-smokers, balanced for age, gender, and periodontal status. Immunofluorescence intensity, representing MMP-…

Physiological evidence that emphysema is not a feature of byssinosis.

A group of women with byssinosis of grades 2 and 3 were seen consecutively over three years in an occupational outpatient clinic. Detailed lung function tests were performed and the results for smokers and non-smokers compared. One hundred and fifty three patients were seen and 50 of these were life time non-smokers, 35 smoked one to nine cigarettes a day, and 68 smoked 10 or more cigarettes a day. After correction for age the mean FEV1 was found to be significantly lower (p less than 0.01) in heavy smokers than in non-smokers. In a subgroup of 89 subjects who were able to perform the carbon m…

Augmented transforming growth factor-beta1 in gingival crevicular fluid of smokers with chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Patients who smoke are at increased risk for chronic periodontitis (CP). Also, CP patients who smoke exhibit significantly less reduction of probing depths and gains in clinical attachment compared to non-smokers following periodontal therapy. Several studies suggest that the effects of smoking on the host response may be paramount in regulating the basal systemic inflammatory status and therapeutic outcomes in this cohort. Growth factors, specifically transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1), are critical in regulating the wound healing response by controlling cell division, d…

The smoking behaviors of incarcerated smokers.

To determine smoking behaviors, quit attempts, and cessation preferences among incarcerated smokers, a cross-sectional survey was given to a sample of inmates from three state prison facilities in the United States. A majority of Black smokers (62%) identified as smokers, and 38% identified as ex-smokers, as compared to 46.4 percent of smokers (and 53.6% of ex-smokers) in the non-Black group. There were significant differences in the number of cigarettes smoked per day with non-Black smokers smoking one pack (M = 20.44, standard deviation = 15.86) than Black smokers (M = 14.49, standard deviat

Elevated Urotensin-II and TGF-β Levels in COPD: Biomarkers of Fibrosis and Airway Remodeling in Smokers.

Background and Objectives: Small airway fibrosis plays a critical role in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Previous research has suggested that Urotensin-II (U-II) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) may contribute to pathological fibrosis in various organs, including the cardiovascular system, lungs, and liver. However, their specific relationship with airway fibrosis in COPD has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to evaluate the concentrations of U-II and TGF-β in individuals with COPD, as well as in healthy smokers and non-smokers, to …
