To determine whether chronic rhinitis usually accompanies chronic sinusitis, and critically examine the concept of chronic rhinosinusitis, paired specimens of nasal septal mucosa and ethmoid sinus mucosa were obtained in a prospective cohort of 42 patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis. The histopathological degree of inflammation for each specimen was scored using a five-point rating scale. We describe a case of steatocystoma multiplex with an unusual clinical manifestation. A 5-year-old girl had 8 papulonodular lesions arranged in a linear fashion on the left side of the nose. These had been present at birth. Histologically the lesions showed the typical features of steatocystoma multiplex. There was no family history of similar lesions. This is the second case of linear steatocystoma multiplex, a rare variant of steatocystoma multiplex.

The authors analyze statistical data on nasal haemorrhages in 50 patients regarding haemorrhage etiology and hospital stay. Treatment results are available for patients with recurrent nasal haemorrhages and essential hypertension. The patients have undergone submucosal resection of the nasal septum. The technique of this operation with reimplantation of the autoligament and autobone is detailed. The procedure proved highly effective in management of recurrent nasal haemorrhages.

The operative procedure performed for marked deformity of the external nose includes the following stages: reestablishment of nasal breathing (submucosal resection of the nasal septum), plastic repair of the external nose (correction of scoliosis ny means of mobilization of the nasal bones, repair of the saddle nose using cartilage transplants). Rethy method allowed optimization of the operative procedure. A simple and reliable scheme of external nose immobilization is outlined.

Over a 6-month period a record was kept of all patients presenting to the accident and emergency (A&E) department with nasal injuries. The results of the nasal radiographs were analysed to gauge their benefit. It was found that there was poor correlation between the radiological findings and the presence of external deformity, the latter determining the decision to carry out treatment. Routine radiographs of the nose are unnecessary in patients with nasal trauma.

Ten patients with red nose due to telangiectasias were treated with the argon laser. Seven had telangiectasias due to rosacea, two had had rhinoplasty, and one had experienced trauma. All of the patients had a good clinical result.

Surgical attempts to straighten a deviated nose do not always produce a satisfactory result, partly due to the surgeon's inability to straighten the anterior part of the nasal septum or to maintain it in a correct position postoperatively. Two cases of fungal infection of the nose and paranasal sinuses by rhinophycomycosis and actinomycosis are reported. The clinical diagnoses in both cases were wrong and in one of them, a malignancy was suspected. These cases are the first to be reported from Central Nigeria. The authors feel that fungal granuloma should be included on the differential diagnoses list for patients with swellings of the nose and paranasal sinuses in this environment.

A form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis, subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN), recurred twice on the nasal ala of a healthy 6-year-old girl whose serum calcium and phosphorus levels were within normal limits. Basophilic granular material and numerous mast cells were present in the superficial dermis. The pathogenesis of SCN is uncertain, but the clinical and histologic features of this lesion are distinctive.

Verruciform xanthoma, first reported in 1971, has been thought to be primarily a lesion of oral and genital sites, the overwhelming majority occurring in the mouth. Recently a few cases have been seen in other sites in association with inflammatory linear epithelial nevus or epidermal nevus syndrome. This report is the first known example of verruciform xanthoma arising in the sun-damaged facial skin of an older patient who had no other associated cutaneous abnormalities.

Nasal telangiectasias, a common condition, can be caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet light, rosacea, topically applied corticosteroids, or rhinoplasty. Use of the argon laser for 15 to 45 minutes in a continuous mode over the entire involved area can produce considerable lightening of the nasal redness and improvement in the cosmetic appearance, as illustrated in the two cases described in this report.
