OBJECTIVE: To identify and to measure entry level competencies (knowledge, skills, attitudes, judgements) for nurses to practice safely and effectively in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
INTRODUCTION: Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small sub-Saharan country between South Africa and Mozambique. There are four nursing programs approved by the Eswatini Nursing Council (ENC) that provide nursing education in the areas of general nursing, midwifery, mental health and community health. The mandate of the ENC is to protect the public and to this end licensed nurses must be able to meet standar

Along with a variety of distressing symptoms, a diagnosis of fibromyalgia (FM) brings with it substantial physical, psychosocial, and financial costs. Research shows that self-management is an effective means to manage FM and can lead to fewer healthcare visits. Yet due to the complexity of this disorder, healthcare providers need to be able to tailor treatment to individual patients by understanding effective treatment interventions. Home healthcare nurses (HHNs) are in a unique position to assess and implement effective treatment recommendations in the home setting and as such could consider

In addition to movement disorders, Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with several nonmotor symptoms, including dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). Dysphagia can make the consumption of solid medicines difficult, which potentially contributes to the poor adherence that is common among people with PD. However, patients may be reluctant to admit that they experience dysphagia. Community nurses should actively enquire into swallowing difficulties among all patients, not only those with PD, and should work with pharmacists and other members of the multidisciplinary team to help optimise medic

Smoking is the most preventable cause of ill health, and is associated with many long-term conditions. Around 24% of all deaths in Scotland in 2004 were attributed to smoking (NHS Health Scotland and ASH Scotland, 2007). This article provides background information on the health effects of smoking, and discusses issues around stop smoking support, highlighting some implications for community nurses who work with clients who want to stop smoking.

Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction is the most prevalent liver disease worldwide, though both patient and health professional still lack awareness of it. An international consensus panel has produced what is sure to be an influential report renaming the disease from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and suggesting how the disease should be diagnosed. This viewpoint explores the call from the perspective of nurse and allied health practitioners. This group have raised serious concerns on the existin

A street nurse position in the rural and small-town interior of British Columbia has been addressing the needs of street-involved or otherwise marginalized client populations by bringing healthcare services to wherever those clients are, rather than waiting for the clients to seek care. The primary reason for a street outreach approach is that marginalized populations face a variety of barriers to accessing traditional healthcare services--barriers such as homelessness, mental health problems, criminal involvement, lack of transportation, lack of ability to pay for prescriptions, lack of speci

The introduction of MMR makes it imperative to improve and maintain high vaccine uptakes. Here we describe an increase in measles uptake following two short campaigns at a year's interval, run by geographically attached health visitors in inner London. The computer controlled immunisation system was used to organise and evaluate the campaigns. They were directed at two groups of children; those due vaccination (eligible prompt participants) and those who had failed to attend previously (eligible late participants). Results are given as cumulative percent uptake for the 1984, 1985 and 1986 birt

1. About one in four adults in the United States has high blood pressure on the basis of a single evaluation. Hypertension is associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency, and peripheral vascular disease. 2. Weight loss, reduced sodium intake, reduced alcohol consumption, and exercise have documented efficacy as interventions to decrease high blood pressure. A number of intervention programs in community based settings and in health care provider practice based settings have documented that behavioral change and r

A historic examination of the major responsibilities of nurses in providing care to individuals with mental retardation indicates that the responsibilities have remained relatively constant, whereas the roles have shifted and expanded over time from nursing assistant activities to advanced practice roles. Regardless of the setting, nurses have been involved in primary and secondary prevention, case finding, health care management of the individual with mental retardation and their family across the life span, instruction about this care to other nurses, and referral. This specialty nursing pra

Haematoma management in community settings presents a clinical challenge because of the absence of standardised national guidance. Haematomas, defined as localised collections of clotted or partially clotted blood within tissues, can result in complications such as skin necrosis, infection and delayed healing if not managed appropriately. This article outlines the assessment and management of closed, open-bleeding and open-clotted haematomas, with emphasis on timely escalation and risk identification, based on the haematoma clinical decision guide designed by the author to address hesitation a

District Nurses and Continence Advisors were surveyed by post to audit their management of long-term indwelling catheters. They were asked to outline, anonymously, their management strategies in response to common specified catheter-related problems. The responses to each question were graded for the appropriateness of strategy from A (best) to E (worst) by previously formulated criteria. Completed questionnaires were returned from all 10 Welsh Continence Advisors and 73 of 139 (53%) District Nurses in South Glamorgan regularly involved in catheter care. A greater proportion of Continence Advi

BACKGROUND: In the UK, people with intellectual disabilities who exhibit aggressive behaviour often receive community-based specialist health services from a community learning disability team (CLDT). Our aim was to estimate costs associated with this provision and to identify predictors of higher costs.
METHOD: Costs were estimated for 60 adults with intellectual disabilities and aggressive behaviour who attended specialist psychiatric outpatient clinics in the West Midlands region of the UK, including contact time with members of the CLDT and use of psychotropic medication over a 12-month p

Communication and cultural competency improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities. Communication is a key skill in culturally competent care. However, most nursing students do not have the opportunity to practice nursing care in languages other than English during their education. An undergraduate elective nursing course integrates scaffolding simulations, cultural competency concepts, and technology-based Spanish-language learning tools to improve Spanish-language proficiency and enhance cultural competency for the care of Spanish-speaking patients. The course uses an innovative de

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how shifting hospital visitor restrictions issued by national health authorities were communicated, managed, and adapted by hospital charge nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
AIMS: To describe the shifting visitor restrictions and the passing on of restrictions from the national authority level to charge nurses and secondly describe charge nurses' management of the restrictions and their challenges when enforcing them.
METHODS: The study consisted of a document analysis and a cross-sectional survey including open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics a

Children who live with medical conditions that were previously considered incompatible with long term survival are often highly dependent on interventions and equipment which would traditionally have required hospitalization. However, it is generally accepted that their social, psychological, emotional and developmental needs are best met at home. One of the many factors that can impede these children from being discharged from hospital is the lack of availability of staff who can provide care and support for them and their families. Increasing the number of staff who are able to provide such

The 2014 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa has presented a significant public health crisis to the international health community and challenged U.S. emergency departments (EDs) to prepare for patients with a disease of exceeding rarity in developed nations. With the presentation of patients with Ebola to U.S. acute care facilities, ethical questions have been raised in both the press and medical literature as to how U.S. EDs, emergency physicians (EPs), emergency nurses, and other stakeholders in the health care system should approach the current epidemic and its potential
