Elements of dialysis nursing practice associated with successful cannulation: result of an international survey.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Vascular access (VA) cannulation is an essential skill for dialysis nurses: failure to correctly repeat this operation daily may result in serious complications for the patients. This study investigates if different aspects of arteriovenous fistula and graft cannulation have an effect on the development of acute access complications, which may affect the VA survival. METHODS: In April 2009 a cross-sectional survey was conducted in 171 dialysis units located in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to collect details on VA cannulation practices. Information on cannulation retrieve

We proceeded to take blood pressure (158/96 mmHg) and assess lower limb edema. The fetal heart rate monitoring was normal. Knowledgeable and user of healthy guidelines during her pregnancy, she did not follow any treatment. Single mother, she worried about her fetus (achieved through in vitro fertilization), her mother offered to help for any mishap. We developed an Individualized Care Plan.

Image, measure, figure: a critical discourse analysis of nursing practices that develop children.

Motivated by discourses that link early child development and health, nurses engage in seemingly benign surveillance of children. These practices are based on knowledge claims and technologies of developmental science, which remain anchored in assumptions of the child body as an incomplete form with a universal developmental trajectory and inherent potentiality. This paper engages in a critical discursive analysis, drawing on Donna Haraway's conceptualizations of technoscience and figuration. Using a contemporary developmental screening tool from nursing practice, this analysis traces the effe

Epilepsy specialist nurse prescribing practice in the United Kingdom: a national questionnaire survey.

Recent advances in legislation have enabled nurses in the United Kingdom (UK) to become Nurse Independent and Supplementary Prescribers (NISP). The NISP can assess, diagnose and independently prescribe any licensed medicine within their area of competence. This change has meant the number of nurse prescribers in disease specific areas has increased. This study set out to assess the number of Epilepsy Specialist Nurses (ESNs) prescribing and the context in which they do so. A draft questionnaire was developed and piloted with 10 ESNs. Minor changes to improve data collection were made. In April

Critical thinking of nurse managers related to staff RNs' perceptions of the practice environment.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Critical thinking (CT) skills and the inclination to engage in critical thinking are essential for nurse managers to function as transformational leaders capable of influencing staff to align with organizational goals. In an extensive literature review, numerous studies were found examining the concept of CT in students and no studies were found exploring CT in nurse managers. Identifying the attributes, such as CT, that lead to success in the nurse manager role is useful when preparing nurse managers to lead effectively in the current healt

Practice nurses' self-reported opportunistic smoking cessation advice in three contexts.

Little is known of the current smoking cessation activities of practice nurses and their attitudes toward giving smoking cessation advice. This study aimed to (a) compare practice nurses' reports of giving smoking cessation advice as part of cervical screening with their reports of giving such advice in cardiovascular disease screening and diabetes care, (b) compare their beliefs about providing such advice in these three contexts, and (c) determine the strongest predictors of their reports of giving smoking cessation advice. A survey was completed by 152 practice nurses in the United Kingdom.

Nurse practice issues regarding sperm banking in adolescent male cancer patients.

The impressive increase in the survival rate of childhood cancer patients has produced increased interest in quality of life issues. This research addresses nurse practice issues in determining whether the newly diagnosed adolescent male patient is offered the option of sperm banking before undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Questionnaires were distributed to nurses and nurse practitioners on 3 inpatient and outpatient units who care for adolescent male cancer patients at the time of diagnosis, during chemotherapy, and during follow-up care. Findings indicate that 96.3% of respondents agreed t

The treatment of oesophageal varices using a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube: considerations for nursing practice.

The Sengstaken-Blakemore tube is slowly becoming the least preferred method for the treatment of oesophageal varices, possibly due to the potential complications that are inherent in its placement. Nursing practice pertaining to the care of this patient group appears ad hoc and reliant on local knowledge and experience, as opposed to recognized evidence of best practice.

Initiating committal proceedings "just in case" with voluntary patients: a critique of nursing practice.

Voluntary patients entering mental health units retain the right to accept or refuse treatment, including ongoing admission, as they see fit. However the nature of acute mental distress means that some patients have fluctuations in their mental status and competency to make informed decisions. Inpatient mental health nurses face the ongoing challenge of practising in a way that balances the requirement to support and promote the autonomy of voluntary patients with the need, occasionally, to take actions which although they may appear paternalistic are needed to protect those patients or other

Is the SANE role within the scope of nursing practice? On "pelvics," "colposcopy," and "dispensing of medications".

Clearly communicating with other professionals and with sexual assault survivors about the boundaries and imitations of the SANE medical-forensic examination is important. Although SANEs work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary sexual assault response team model to better meet the needs of sexual assault victims, they function as independent professional nurses in their role of collecting medical forensic evidence. Properly defined to focus on assessment, identification, and documentation of trauma, the SANE role is an independent professional role but is still within the scope of basic nurs

Appropriately trained nurses are competent at inserting intrauterine devices: an audit of clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: Very few nurses in the UK insert intrauterine devices (IUDs). Within King's Healthcare, nurses with the advanced family planning qualification (ENB AO8), who have also undertaken further training in IUD insertion, have done so for many years. This is a controversial issue and our aim was to evaluate whether women who had IUDs inserted by specialist nurses had significantly more problems compared with those inserted by doctors. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective, ongoing, cohort study of all IUD insertions in hospital-based family planning clinics over a 3-month period. A medical,

Accuracy of bedside electrocardiographic monitoring: a report on current practices of critical care nurses.

Diagnostic criteria for many arrhythmias can be observed from any monitoring lead; however, other important criteria are "lead specific," such as the diagnostic QRS patterns in V1 that aid in distinguishing ventricular tachycardia from supraventricular tachycardia with bundle branch block or aberration. Therefore, it makes a great deal of difference which leads are selected for bedside monitoring. Our purpose was to determine which leads nurses select for monitoring, and the accuracy of lead placement. From a random sample of nurses who were members of the American Association of Critical-Care

Clinical Supervision in Nursing and Evidence-Based Practices in Radial Haemostasis: A Pilot Study.

AIM: To explore radial artery haemostasis practices in relation to recommended protocols, alongside the strategies and characteristics of clinical supervision among nurses providing this care. BACKGROUND: The radial artery is the preferred access route for coronary angiography, but successful outcomes depend on appropriate postprocedure haemostasis management, primarily a nursing responsibility. Clinical supervision supports professional development and care quality, yet little is known about its relationship to haemostasis protocols in interventional cardiology settings. METHODS: A descript
