Total parenteral nutrition has showed his efficacy in severe digestive diseases. However, infections, metabolic and hepato biliary complications can appear. Aim of this study is to report hepato biliary complications in 200 adult patients, mean age 53 years, treated between 1979 and 1988. Three types of hepato biliary complications occurred in 138 patients initially free of hepato biliary disorders: 1) biochemical hepatic disorders (cholestasis and/or cytolysis) occurred in 58 patients (42%) with mean time of 27 days. In 40% these disorders disappeared after modifications or stop of parenteral

The ability to diagnose and treat acid-base disorders is an important component in the practice of the nutrition support clinician. A complete understanding of the basic principles of metabolic and respiratory disorders allows the practitioner to formulate educated decisions regarding fluids, parenteral nutrition salts, and the management of electrolytes. This review will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of common metabolic and respiratory disorders encountered in nutrition support practice.

The prevalence of eating disorders is higher in university nutrition faculties than in other faculties. We examined beliefs about and approaches to eating disorders in nutrition education faculties around the world. We developed a questionnaire specifically for this project and distributed 664 copies electronically, using contact information obtained in collaboration with Dietitians of Canada and the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations. Using the 101 questionnaires returned from 14 countries, we found that 77% of respondents felt eating disorders are a concern among nutrition

PURPOSE: The ketogenic nutritional therapy (KeNuT) is an effective dietary treatment for patients with obesity and obesity-related comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, coronary artery disease, and some type of cancers. However, to date an official document on the correct prescription of the ketogenic diet, validated by authoritative societies in nutrition or endocrine sciences, is missing. It is important to emphasize that the ketogenic nutritional therapy requires proper medical supervision for patient selection, due to the complex biochemical implications of

Nutrition support practitioners should be confident in their ability to recognize and treat various metabolic and respiratory disorders encountered in daily practice. A clinician's comprehension of the underlying physiologic processes and/or exogenous causes that occur during acid-base disorders is essential when making therapeutic decisions regarding fluids, parenteral nutrition, and electrolyte management. This invited review will discuss basic metabolic and respiratory disorders while briefly addressing mixed acid-base disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gastrointestinal symptoms are common and often severe in patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/hypermobility spectrum disorders (hEDS/HSD), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). This review provides a structured, practical framework for evaluation of gastrointestinal symptoms and appropriate use of nutrition support in this population, where clinical practice remains variable and escalation to non-oral nutrition support may occur prematurely.
RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging data highlight the high prevalence of diso

The functional integrity of the gastrointestinal tract is an essential prerequisite in intensive care patients for the sufficient administration of enteral nutrition. Up to 65% of patients in intensive care units develop symptoms of gastrointestinal dysfunction with high residual gastric volume, vomiting and abdominal distension. The pathophysiological alterations of gastrointestinal intolerance and the subsequent effect on the tolerance of enteral nutrition can affect the whole gastrointestinal tract. Gastroduodenal motility disorders in particular, with increased gastroesophageal reflux lead

Despite the high prevalence of nutrition disorders in patients with heart failure (HF), major HF guidelines lack specific nutrition recommendations. Because of the lack of standardized definitions and assessment tools to quantify nutritional status, nutrition disorders are often missed in patients with HF. Additionally, a wide range of dietary interventions and overall dietary patterns have been studied in this population. The resulting evidence of benefit is, however, conflicting, making it challenging to determine which strategies are the most beneficial. In this document, we review the avai

AIM: Artificial nutrition, including tube feeding, continues to be given to dementia patients in numerous geriatric facilities in Japan. However, the clinical characteristics of patients receiving artificial nutrition have not been fully investigated. Therefore, we tried to evaluate the clinical features of those patients in this study.
METHODS: Various clinical characteristics of all inpatients at 18 of 20 psychiatric hospitals in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, with a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube, nasogastric tube, or total parenteral nutrition were evaluated.
RESULTS: Two hundred t

Recent anecdotal reports suggest that total parenteral nutrition may be associated with an increased incidence of both acalculous cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. The validity of this association, however, has not been tested in a large population of patients on long-term total parenteral nutrition. Therefore, we assessed the incidence of gallbladder disease among our patients 15 yr and older who had received a minimum of 3 mo of total parenteral nutrition. Of the patients meeting these criteria, 128 were on total parenteral nutrition a mean of 13.5 mo. Nineteen had gallbladder disease before

BACKGROUND: Infants with gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are at risk for parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis. A multioil intravenous lipid emulsion (MO ILE) contains less phytosterols and more arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) than 100% soybean oil lipid emulsion (SO ILE). This study compares parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis, growth, and fatty acids in infants with GI disorders who received MO ILE or SO ILE.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 48 infants with GI disorders born between 2014 and 2022 who received an intravenous lipid emulsion for ≥14 da

The nutrition support practitioner is confronted with numerous metabolic abnormalities in the daily care of patients. An understanding of the basic principles of acid-base balance, along with the ability to recognize common causes of the various disorders, enhances the clinician's ability to provide specialized nutrition support. The basic metabolic and respiratory disorders, along with common causes, are reviewed in this tutorial.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant U.S. military health concern. Although emerging evidence suggests that nutrition may contribute to TBI outcomes, research on clinical nutrition interventions, especially within military populations, is limited because of a lack of data repositories that integrate the Nutrition Care Process, lifestyle factors, and clinical outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established a novel Nutrition and TBI Data Repository, integrating TBI and nutrition care data from military health records spanning from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2024. Ou

Disorders of immunity and nutritional status are known to be present in alcohol-induced diseases of the liver, but their significance is still debated. Nutrition and immunity were evaluated at different stages of the disease in 58 alcoholic patients with steatosis (n = 20), alcoholic hepatitis (n = 14) or cirrhosis (n = 24). Most of the anthropometric data and biochemical values relating to nutrition were altered to the same degree in these 3 groups. Only patients with cirrhosis had significantly lower blood albumin and zinc levels (P less than 0.01). Humoral immunity was altered in cirrhosis

It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that nutrition services provided by registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered (NDTRs), who work under RDN supervision, are essential components of comprehensive care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). Nutrition services should be provided throughout life in a manner that is interdisciplinary, family-centered, community based, and culturally competent. Individuals with IDD and CYSHCN have m

In long-standing stress situation, in malabsorption syndromes we cannot provide the adequate protein and energy intake with enteral nutrition, so we often have to add complementary parenteral feeding. Using combined enteral and "individualised" parenteral nutrition the quality of life improves, the time of hospital stay decreases. The parenteral nutrition of neonates and infants implies a great challenge for health care supplier; there is no available "All-in-One" mixture infusion below 2 years of age. We developed a new chart for parenteral nutrition, which can be modified easily according to

Nutrition has a central role in child growth with long-term effects, and nutrition management in gastrointestinal disorders has great importance for child health and disease outcomes. Breast milk is the first choice for infant nutrition. When it is not available, special milk formulas are adopted in specific conditions, as a medical treatment. Moving from the strong guidelines, recommendations and the new possibilities of special diet treatment, this review will analyse the current diet treatment in different gastrointestinal disorders, including food allergy, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bow

Undernutrition due to insufficient intake of energy and macronutrients and/or due to deficiencies in specific micronutrients impairs the immune system, suppressing immune functions that are fundamental to host protection. The most consistent abnormalities are seen in cell-mediated immunity, complement system, phagocyte function, cytokine production, mucosal secretory antibody response, and antibody affinity. There is a number of physiological situations such as ageing and performance of intense physical exercise associated with an impairment of some immune parameters' response. Nutrition can i
