Morphine pellets produced atrophy of the spleen and thymus and affected mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation in mice as characterized by marked suppression of concanavalin A-induced blastogenesis at 48 h, and mild stimulation at 120 h. Morphine blood levels in these animals indicated that changes in the immunomodulatory effects of morphine over time were not related to dramatic shifts in circulating morphine. Enclosure of the pellet in nylon mesh did not alter blood levels or morphine-induced immunomodulation.

A nonisotopic ribosomal DNA fingerprinting technique was developed for the characterization of Listeria monocytogenes. Plasmid pKK3535 (a pBR322-derived plasmid containing rrnB ribosomal RNA operon of Escherichia coli) was labeled with digoxigenin-11-dUTP by random priming and used to probe EcoRI fragments of L. monocytogenes chromosomal DNA on nylon filters. The method was successfully applied to the characterization of two sets of patient and food isolates of L. monocytogenes.

A new method has been developed for surgery of the lacrimal duct: direct suture with 10/0 nylon suture without intubation. The authors report their experience in the treatment of canalicular lacerations (20 cases) and herpetic canalicular stenosis (3 cases). Results were very good in the first group and variable in the second. Epiphora can persist in the second group, though to a lesser degree, because of the displacement of the lacrimal point.

The migration of primary aromatic amines (PAAs) from food contact materials raises significant public health concerns. In this study, the migration levels of 26 PAAs were analyzed in 242 nylon cooking utensils using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of intraoperative computerized corneal topographic data in excimer laser-assisted lamellar keratoplasty (ELLK) and penetrating keratoplasty (PK).
METHODS: Prospective, comparative, interventional case series. Intra- and postoperative videokeratography (Keratron Scout) evaluation was performed on 30 eyes of 30 consecutive patients affected by keratoconus (16 men and 14 women; mean age 32.63±8.02 years) submitted to ELLK (15 eyes) using 16 interrupted 10-0 nylon stitches or to PK (15 eyes) using a 12-bite 10-0 nylon double-running continuous suture.

The paper is a clinical retrospective analysis of free conjunctival autograft in treatment of pterygia. In period from 1998 until 2006, 47 patients with pterygia were operated using free conjunctival autograft. There were 19 female and 38 male, average age 61 years. We describe a simple and rapid dot immunoperoxidase assay for the direct detection of parvovirus B19 capsid antigens in human sera. The assay was performed with serum specimens dotted onto nylon membranes. We report an unusual case of unilateral rhinolith. The patient was a 21-year-old man who had a history of left-sided nasal obstruction and recurrent bouts of fetid, purulent rhinorrhea of several years'duration. The rhinolith, which had formed around an impacted foreign body, was extracted in several pieces under local anesthesia. Laboratory evaluation revealed that the foreign body was a hardened mixture of codeine and opium wrapped in a small sheet of nylon-what we called an "opioma."

The degradation of plastic waste can be facilitated by a process in which polymers react with nitrogen oxides and dioxygen under relatively mild conditions. Polystyrene generates a mixture of benzoic and nitrobenzoic acids. Both high- and low-density polyethylene produce mixtures of short-chain α,ω-diacids (including adipic acid) in good yields.
