OBJECTIVE: Common variation is a statistical process-control term for variability associated with usual operating conditions. Special variation occurs when usual operating conditions are disrupted. The objective was to explore the implications for preventive occupational medicine practice of common and special variation in air-level exposure.
METHODS: Illustrations are derived from US and UK beryllium facility databases.
RESULTS: Special variation may be missed in finite sampling sets, giving a very inaccurate indication of the highest air levels experienced on the job. Depending on the toxi

Rubber allergy is an important occupational health problem for an increasing number of patients. It may produce a type I urticarial reaction, or more commonly, a type IV delayed eczematous dermatitis. The risk groups include health care workers, rubber industry workers, and children with spina bifida (meningomyelocele) and urogenital abnormalities. In this report, we describe a physician with a relevant history who was found to have type I hypersensitivity to rubber by prick test and use test. Our aim is to increase awareness among physicians, discuss diagnosis and management, and review the l…

The author reviews the worldwide references concerning the problem of HIV infection in health care workers (HCW) after occupational exposure in its different aspects: infection risk rate (0.36-0.4%); common types of exposure (percutaneous, contact, and mucomembranous); main risk factors related to the lesion, the patient (donor) and HCW (receptor); and preventive attitude to be adopted. In what concerns prevention, the author emphasises the universal precautions (nosocomial infection prevention) and drug prophylaxis with anti retroviral drugs-reasons for administration, inclusion and exclusion

Health care workers are challenged by an imposing group of occupational hazards. These hazards include exposure to ionizing radiation, stress, injury, infectious agents, and chemicals. The magnitude and diversity of these hazards are not fully appreciated. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic has created additional occupational hazards and has focused attention on the problem of occupational hazards to health care workers. Concern over the nosocomial transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus has contributed to efforts to implement universal infection control precautions and t

BACKGROUND: Nursing staff are exposed to demanding occupational conditions, including physical load, physiological stress and negative institutional factors that are associated with job turnover and unhealthy behavior, health complaints (such as back pain), and other issues. Occupational health promotion programs, such as ergonomics and exercise, are offered to counteract these unfavorable trends, but participation is often low. However, knowledge about factors favoring or reducing the participation of nursing staff in occupational health promotion programs in nursing home settings remains inc…

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapy is underpinned by the belief that occupation facilitates health and wellbeing. However, evidence suggests that occupational therapists encounter challenges to implementing occupation-centred practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the uptake, acceptability and impact of a workplace intervention designed to enhance occupation-centred practice of occupational therapists in an acute adult physical context.
METHODS: A concurrent mixed methods study using a pre-post design was employed. The setting was a regional and rural health service in Queensland.

Hotel housekeepers represent a large, low-income, predominantly minority, and high-risk workforce. Little is known about their exposure to chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study evaluates VOC exposures of housekeepers, sources and factors affecting VOC levels, and provides preliminary estimates of VOC-related health risks. We utilized indoor and personal sampling at two hotels, assessed ventilation, and characterized the VOC composition of cleaning agents. Personal sampling of hotel staff showed a total target VOC concentration of 57 ± 36 µg/m3 (mean ± SD), about tw

OBJECTIVES: Beryllium is primarily used in its metallic form, in alloys, or in beryllium oxide ceramics. Its physical and mechanical properties make it useful for many applications across a range of industries. Because beryllium is recognized as a sensitizing and carcinogenic agent, the management of occupational health for workers who may be occupationally exposed to beryllium has long been an important issue in the world. Under these circumstances, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had published a rule in January 2017, to prevent the development of chronic berylli…

OBJECTIVE: Occupational health staff and managers play important roles in supporting workers with mental health concerns and mutual co-operation among them is a necessary element. However, when co-operating with other professionals, several problems arise that often make such co-operation a challenge. Effective mutual actions are needed to promote such co-operation, and relationships must be formed for this purpose. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to clarify how occupational health nurses form relationships for facilitating co-operation with managers to provide support to workers with menta…

Industrial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are strictly controlled worldwide. However, the gap between VOC regulation and health effects has increased owing to the complexity of characterizing deleterious species and understanding their hazards. By identifying the differences in exposure patterns among VOC-related industries, we examined occupational exposure profiles in 24 industries by analyzing 557 samples collected in breathing zones. The high-end exposure level was used to estimate aggregate health risk, and the cumulative risks for affected organs/tissues were then assessed individuall

Benzene is one of the most common occupational hazards in the working environment which was in the list of group 1 carcinogens. This study applied four occupational health risk assessment models: EPA model; MOM model of Singapore; the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) model, and the Technical guide WS/T 777-2021 of China. The models assessed both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects of benzene for 1629 employees in 50 factories in Jiangsu Province (China) who were exposed to benzene in the working environment and analysis the risk between industries by principal component …

BACKGROUND: Office workers face workplace-related health issues, including stress and back pain, resulting in considerable cost to businesses and health care systems. Workplace health promotion attempts to prevent these health issues, and the internet can be used to deliver workplace health promotion interventions to office workers. Data were provided by Fitbase GmbH, a German company, which specializes in workplace health promotion via the internet (Web-based health). The Web-based health intervention allowed workers to focus on different health categories by using information modules (readin

BACKGROUND: An occupational health supplement (OHS) to the 1988 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) bypassed many limitations of traditional occupational health surveillance systems, but the data collected about chronic work-related conditions have not yet been reported.
METHODS: We calculated the prevalence and proportion of cases related to work for the aggregation of 13 chronic conditions included in the NHIS-OHS, and for 11 conditions individually. For each of nine conditions, and for the aggregation of all conditions, we also calculated the prevalence of workers' compensation claims …

BACKGROUND: Projects for workplace health promotion (WHP) for back pain traditionally focus exclusively on work-related but not on leisure-time stress on the spine. We developed a comprehensive WHP project on the back health of hospital workers regardless of the physical characteristics of their work and compared its effects on sedentary and physically active hospital workers.
METHODS: Study assessments were carried out before and six months after participation in the WHP intervention. The primary outcome parameter was back pain (Oswestry Disability Index, ODI). Anxiety (Generalized Anxiety D
