Pesticide residues in olive oil.

The attacks of pests and diseases and the presence of weeds make it necessary to apply pesticides to olive trees to ensure crop protection. Residues of these compounds may remain and contaminate the oil produced. For the analysis of pesticide residues in olive oil, the most common methods are multiresidue methods for fatty substrates, based on partitioning between hexane or light petroleum and acetonitrile. Recently, other methods have been applied, such as ready-to-use, disposable minicolumns or direct injection of oil into a capillary gas chromatograph equipped with a precolumn with an oil r

Kuwait oil fires: correction.

In our article "Airborne studies of the smoke from the Kuwait oil fires" (15 May, p. 987) (1), we stated that the depletions of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) in the smoke plume from the Kuwait oil fires were 50 and 60% per hour, respectively. These values were derived from measurements made aboard a Convair C-131 aircraft, and measurements of CO(2) were used as a conserved tracer. Subsequent comparisons of these measurements of CO(2) (which were obtained from a continuous analyzer) with independent measurements of CO(2) (obtained from "grab" samples) revealed that the cont

The effect of silicone oil on the cornea.

Intraocular silicone oil tamponade is being used with increasing frequency as an adjunct to conventional vitrectomy techniques in the treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy. When used in patients with aphakia, corneal decompensation is a common long-term complication. In this study, we evaluated the clinical and morphologic changes that occurred in the corneas of 14 rabbits and seven cats when the anterior chamber was filled with silicone oil. Within six days, wide-field specular microscopy showed a 40% reduction in endothelial density in the area of the silicone oil bubble in both group

Chemical Profiling and Antimicrobial Prospective of Commercial Essential Oils from Selected Lamiaceae Genera.

Essential oils (EOs) of Lamiaceae family have been reported to possess antimicrobial properties. However, commercial preparations of EOs are often of variable quality and inconsistent efficacy due to adulteration and chemotypic variation. This study comprehensively profiled six retail Lamiaceae EOs (Origanum vulgare, O. vulgare subsp. hirtum, Thymus vulgaris, Lavandula angustifolia, Salvia officinalis, and Melissa officinalis) available in Türkiye using GC-MS, complemented by principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) to discern chemotypic relationships. Antimic…

Green innovations in food packaging: Sustainable biopolymeric films infused with nanoencapsulated essential oils.

Food degradation through multiple pathways contributes to increased food wastage while also increasing the likelihood of foodborne diseases … improve the functional properties of such materials. Natural food additives, particularly essential oils (EOs), exhibit potent antimicrobial activity and good mechanical properties making them promising candidates for novel food preservatives. However, their practical application in the food industry has been limited due to key challenges, including lo …

Activity of essential oils against Caenorhabditis elegans: Showing anthelmintic potential for new products.

The emergence of anthelmintic resistance in livestock and companion animal parasites necessitates the search for alternative therapeutic molecules. This study investigated the nematicidal activities of six essential oils (EOs) - Thymus vulgaris, Eugenia caryophyllus, Cymbopogon flexuosus, Illicium verum, Pelargonium graveolens, and Origanum vulgare - using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism. Methods included adult lethality, egg hatching, and egg-laying assays, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess cuticular damage. Strains tested included the wild-type (N2) and four …

Antibacterial activity of selected plant essential oils against carbapenemase-producing multidrug-resistant bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by carbapenemase-producing multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria represent a major global health challenge, highlighting the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial agents. METHODS: In this study, MDR isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were obtained from the microbial bank of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The presence of carbapenemase genes (blaKPC, blaIMP, blaNDM, blaVIM-1, and blaOXA-48) was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Gram-negative isolates. Essential oils (Eos) of …

Antibacterial Essential Oils as Adjuvants to Inhibit Antibiotic Resistance in Multidrug-resistant Bacteria.

In order to contribute to the fight against the antibiotic resistance crisis, we used a dual-activity prospection strategy for natural product mixtures with antibiotic resistance modulating and antibacterial activities in the essential oils (EOs) of Artemisia ludoviciana, Lippia graveolens, and Cosmos bipinnatus against multidrug-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa HIM-MR01, Staphylococcus aureus HIM-MR02, Enterococcus faecalis HIM-MR05, and Salmonella typhi HIM-MR06. The three EOs exerted antibacterial activity on the bacterial strains with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ran…

Cytotoxic Activity of Essential Oils from Middle Eastern Medicinal Plants on Malignant Keratinocytes.

Skin cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma cancers (basal and squamous cell carcinomas), is the most common type of cancer. UV radiation, family history, and genetic predisposition are the main risk factors. Although surgical excision is the standard treatment, essential oils are attracting growing interest for their anti-cancer effects. This study tested the effects of Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb. (Cupressaceae), Lavandula vera DC. (Lamiaceae), and Salvia fruticosa (Mill). (Lamiaceae) essential oils extracted from Middle Eastern medicinal plants on HaCaT (normal), A5 (benign), and II4 (lo…

Essential Oils From Four Litsea Species of Uttarakhand: Phytochemical Insights and Biological Activities.

In this study, the chemical composition of four species of genus Litsea, namely, Litsea lanuginosa, Litsea monopetala, Litsea glutinosa and two chemotypes of Litsea umbrosa was investigated. The major compounds identified in the studied EOs of Litsea species were tetradectetraenoic acid ethyl ester, furanodiene and E-(β) caryophyllene and so forth. The EOs exhibited good radical scavenging activity against DPPH with IC50 values. All the tested EOs showed activity in the metal chelating and reducing power assay. Nitric oxide and superoxide radical scavenging were also analysed and found to be s
