The pattern of HTLV-1 replication was assessed through PCR amplification of the 3' proviral integration sites in patients with TSP/HAM at different times. The discovery that there is an expansion of a CTG repeat underlying myotonic dystrophy has led to new approaches in diagnosis and genetic counselling for this disorder. The size of the expansion correlates to a reasonable degree with the clinical symptoms within a given family. We report comparisons of the length of the expansion seen in lymphocytes and muscle samples from eight patients. Forty-six cases of sporadic melanoma have been investigated for loss of heterozygosity at 4 loci: D11S29 (11q23), YNZ22 (17p13.3), TP53 (17p13.1); and NM23 (17q22). Each of the loci is thought to be important in the pathogenesis of other tumours. Mutations were found infrequently at the YNZ22, NM23, and TP53 loci. Thirty-seven DR4-positive patient-unrelated bone marrow donor pairs previously DR/DQ restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) typed and tested in mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC), have been DR4-Dw subtyped retrospectively using sequence specific oligonucleotide probes. We found that DR4-Dw subtyping substantially increased the accuracy of pre-MLC matching and could potentially accelerate donor searches by avoiding unnecessary MLC tests on Dw-mismatched donors.

Nucleoside monophosphate in the presence of cyanamide at acid pH condenses to form dithymideine pyrophosphate and phosphodiester bonded compounds. Imidazole compounds and activated precursors such as nucleoside triphosphate are not necessary for this ologomerization reaction which produces primarily cyclic ologonucleotides.
