A summer camp for children with cancer.

The prognosis for children with cancer has changed significantly over the past 10 years. Currently, it is anticipated that cure can be achieved in approximately 50% of newly diagnosed cases of childhood cancer. The quality of life for these children depends not only on their medical treatment but also on the successful management of the psychological problems related to their diagnosis. A summer camp was established in Florida as a part of our psychosocial rehabilitation program for pediatric cancer patients. Participating in the day-to-day camp life were 26 children with various forms of canc

Estimating the number of deaths averted from 2008 to 2020 within the Ethiopian CMAM programme.

The management of wasting in Ethiopia is heavily reliant on the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) programme that has been implemented in more than 18,000 service delivery points scattered across the country. Despite the full-scale implementation of the CMAM, the number of child death averted, and the cost per child death averted remains unknown. This study aimed to estimate the cost and the number of child death averted by the CMAM programme between 2008 and 2020. Using data from routine monitoring of the CMAM programme, we estimated the excess mortality averted by the pr

Maternal Functioning and Child's Externalizing Problems: Temperament and Sex-Based Driven Effects.

This study examines how maternal adverse parenting (hostility, neglect, low warmth) and psychological distress explain the associations between child temperament factors and externalizing problems. It also examines if these associations differ according to the child's biological sex. The sample consists of 339 school-age children receiving in-school services for conduct problems. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by mothers at 3 time points, at one-year intervals. Results from path analyses revealed that maternal psychological distress partly explained the associations betwe

Multiplex developmental disorders. The role of communication in the construction of a self.

This article discusses the integration of various aspects of the child's development, particularly the development of language and communication and the way in which these developments interact to enable the child to construct a coherent sense of self. Multiplex developmental disorder is presented as an example of a disorder that affects several of these crucial strands of development. Recent research and controversies regarding the diagnostic descriptions of multiplex and other pervasive developmental disorders are presented. This discussion is used to illustrate the ways in which such disord

[Brucellosis in a 3 month-old infant].

During the course of a bronchiolitis in a 3 month-old child, one blood culture yielded Brucella melitensis. The diagnosis of brucellosis is difficult in infancy because the symptoms are nonspecific and the disease may be mild and self-limited. The child received only breast milk and dietetic preparations. So, the detection in the maternal serum of a significant titer of Brucella agglutinin enabled us to consider the very rare human-to-human transmission from mother to child. Because the efficacy of ceftriaxone assessed by a favorable initial response, and in order to avoid complications due to

The burden of parenting children with frontal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Caring for a child with a chronic illness adds stress to the typical parenting stress in healthy developing children. This stress can place a heavy burden on parents and may increase when a child displays problem behavior. In general, parenting and child's behavior problems are associated. Furthermore, externalizing (more outgoing) behavior is reported frequently in children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Therefore, in this study, we first investigated the burden of parents of children with FLE, and second, we investigated the relation between the experienced burden and reported

Agreement between parent reported and child self-reported sport-related concussion history: A brief report.

This cross sectional investigation measured the agreement between parent report of their 8-14 year old child's sport-related concussion (SRC) history and their child's self-report of their own SRC history. Parent-child dyads (n = 405) within a youth contact sports (e.g., football, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer) setting participated in the study. Parents (6.2%) and 8.6% of children self-reported a history of at least one diagnosed SRC. We observed substantial agreement between the number of parent-reported and child self-reported SRCs (κ = 0.613, p ≤ .001). Partial agreement regarding the number

An overview of child physical abuse: developing an integrated parent-child cognitive-behavioral treatment approach.

This article reviews and summarizes the extant literature regarding child physical abuse (CPA). Literature is summarized that describes the wide range of short- and long-term effects of CPA on children as well as the documented characteristics of parents/caregivers who engage in physically abusive parenting practices. Although the reviewed research documents that interventions geared only toward the parent have been found to produce significant improvements with respect to parenting abilities, parent-child interactions, and children's behavior problems, there is a paucity of research examining

Is there an association between the nutritional status of the mother and that of her 2-year-old to 5-year-old child?

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between the nutritional status of the mother and that of her 2-year-old to 5-year-old child in a rural village in South Africa where there is a high prevalence of childhood malnutrition (in particular, deficiencies of vitamin A and iron) and of maternal obesity. A blood sample and anthropometric measurements were obtained for 118 child-mother pairs. There was a positive mother-child correlation for serum ferritin (R=0.2304, P<0.05) and haemoglobin (R=0.2664, P<0.01) concentrations, respectively. The child of an anaemic moth

Direct and Indirect Longitudinal Associations of Mother and Father Engagement in Middle Childhood on Adolescent Externalizing and Internalizing Behaviors.

Parent engagement is an important aspect of parenting during childhood. However, little is known about the unique longitudinal associations of mother and father engagement with adolescents' externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors. This study uses Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study data to examine the potential direct and indirect associations of parent engagement at age 9 on adolescent externalizing and internalizing behaviors at age 15. The analytic sample size is 1349, and at age 9, the mean age of children was 9.40 years (SD = 0.37). Forty-eight percent of children were

Effects of parents' knowledge and attitudes about to child sexual abuse on childhood sexual myths.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse is a serious global public health concern. Parents' myths about sexual abuse may cause the abuse or the abuser to be overlooked. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the role of parents' child sexual abuse-related knowledge and attitudes in predicting childhood sexual abuse myths. METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional, descriptive design, and the sample consisted of 410 parents. The Information Form and the Parent Form of the Childhood Sexual Abuse Myths Scale (CSAMS) and Child Sexual Abuse Knowledge/Attitude Scale for Parents (CSAKAS) were used for dat

Parent and child anxiety sensitivity: relationship to children's experimental pain responsivity.

UNLABELLED: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) or fear of anxiety sensations has been linked to childhood learning history for somatic symptoms, suggesting that parental AS may impact children's responses to pain. Using structural equation modeling, we tested a conceptual model in which parent AS predicted child AS, which in turn predicted a hypothesized latent construct consisting of children's pain intensity ratings for 3 laboratory pain tasks (cold pressor, thermal heat, and pressure). This conceptual model was tested in 211 nonclinical parent-child pairs (104 girls, 107 boys; mean age 12.4 years; 17

Qualitative differences in perspective on children's quality of life between children with cerebral palsy and their parents.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common childhood disabilities, impacting many areas of a child's life. Increasingly, quality of life (QOL) measures are used to capture holistic wellbeing of children with CP. However most validated QOL measures for children are based on adult perspective only, with limited focus on child perspective. Conceptual differences between children's and adults' definitions of QOL may reflect different underlying QOL models which contribute to measurement score divergence. This qualitative study investigated the conceptual meaning of QOL for children

Parental and Child Factors Associated With 2- to 6-Year-Old Children's Diet Quality in Finland.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence about diet quality and associated factors in a representative population-based sample of preschool-aged children in Finland. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to investigate (1) the extent to which child diet quality and the consumption of health indicator foods (vegetables, fruits, berries, vegetable oil-based spread, nonfat milk) are in accordance with Finnish recommendations for preschool-aged children, (2) whether diet quality differs between children with underweight or normal weight compared with children with overweight or obesity, and (3) whe

Emergency department presentations and admission for common mental disorders following agency-notified child maltreatment at 40-year follow-up: results from the Childhood Adversity and Lifetime Morbidity study.

BACKGROUND: Most evidence on associations between child maltreatment and subsequent common mental disorders (CMDs) comes from retrospective studies. Such findings may be affected by recall bias. Prospective studies of reports to statutory agencies are less common and may be subject to attrition bias. AIM: To examine the associations of child maltreatment with emergency department presentations and in-patient admissions for CMDs in individuals up to 40 years old. METHOD: Queensland-wide administrative health data were linked to a prospective birth cohort, including agency-reported and substan

Maternal Parental Self-Efficacy Following Child-Focused Birth Preparation Classes for Families Expecting a Second Child: A Pilot Exploratory Study.

Background/Objectives: Mothers expecting a second child experience the parenting of multiple children for the first time, differing from first-time motherhood. This highlights the need for childbirth preparation education tailored to families expecting a second child. Parental self-efficacy influences maternal mental health, child development, and parent-child interactions. This non-randomized pilot exploratory study aimed to examine the association between childbirth preparation education for families expecting a second child and maternal parental self-efficacy at 1-month postpartum, focusing

Parental attitudes and practices in families with siblings with and without intellectual disability: Influences of sociodemographic and child-related factors.

BACKGROUND: Parenting styles and attitudes are a relevant factor of a child's developmental environment. When parents raise both a child with an intellectual disability and a typically developing (TD) sibling, their approaches may differ due to factors related to the child, family, and social context. This study explored whether parenting styles and attitudes are consistent across children and examined whether sociodemographic and child-related factors explain variations in parenting behaviors. METHOD: Ninety-five parents with one child diagnosed with intellectual disability (according to DSM
