New aspects of contact lenses in ophthalmology.

The introduction of the hydrophilic contact lens has been a significant advance in ophthalmology for the correction of ametropia, as well as for the therapy of corneal disease. The number of potential contact lens candidates has been greatly expanded by the introduction of both spin-cast and lathe-cut lenses composed of a variety of individual hydrophilic polymers. Myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, aphakia and moderate astigmatism can be corrected with a reasonable degree of success with the present lenses. Even in keratoconus hydrophilic lenses offer a nonsurgical alternative, especially when co…

Strengthening pediatric ophthalmology in low-income countries.

There is a pressing need for pediatric eye care in low-income countries. Pediatric ophthalmologists from high-income countries can collaborate with local eye care teams to address pressing needs by jointly providing medical or surgical care, codeveloping training programs for local professionals, and supporting initiatives to acquire equipment or enhance infrastructure. Such efforts are maximized through long-term professional relationships with a goal of understanding and strengthening local eye care service and infrastructure. It is important that changes be sustainable so that these needs c

Teleconsultation: Ophthalmology reaching every nook and corner.

This study evaluates the impact of teleconsultation services in rural communities across India through a retrospective analysis. Teleconsult … io and the challenges in accessing quality eye care in rural areas, these findings suggest that teleophthalmology is a powerful tool in bridging the healthcare gap. It not only brings accessible and affordable eye care to underserved populations but also helps reduce the burden on tertiary care centres.

[Burnout in ophthalmology: Review of the literature].

Burnout syndrome is an occupational hazard characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Although it initially arises in the workplace setting, it can spill over and affect all aspects of an individual's life. The high prevalence of physician burnout represents a public health crisis for healthcare systems already under strain. In France, it is estimated that 62% of physicians have experienced an episode of burnout. The consequences of burnout are multiple: deterioration of individual health, decreased productivity, risk of profess

Building a strong European journal of ophthalmology.

Since January 2025, the European Journal of Ophthalmology has entered a phase of change aimed at strengthening its role as a platform for European researchers. We have restructured the editorial board into specialized sections, introduced new content areas focused on AI, public health, and evidence-based medicine, and we are replacing case reports with a new section dedicated to clinical images. We have also launched official social media accounts to share content more widely and are working on ways to better recognize the contributions of our reviewers. These changes reflect a long-term commi…

Exosome Innovations in Ophthalmology and Sjögren's Syndrome.

Exosomes, a subset of extracellular vesicles, have emerged as potential therapeutic agents in ophthalmology due to their ability to modulate immune responses, facilitate cellular communication, and promote tissue repair. This chapter explores the potential applications of exosome-based therapies in corneal and anterior segment disorders, retinal diseases, glaucoma, and Sjögren's syndrome. In corneal disorders, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived secretomes have shown promise in accelerating wound healing, reducing fibrosis, and modulating inflammation, with hydrogel encapsulation strategies po…

Patricia E. Bath: A Luminary in Ophthalmology.

Renowned ophthalmologist and inventor Dr. Patricia Bath made ground-breaking contributions to medicine. After seeing that blindness was more common among Black patients, she focused much of her career on improving access to eye care for underserved communities. Bath's most important contributions to her field of ophthalmology were the inventions of community ophthalmology and the laserphaco probe. Community ophthalmology improves access to eye care by combining treatment, education, and preventive care into a coherent program targeted toward serving underprivileged populations. The laserphaco …

Applications of SMILE-extracted lenticules in ophthalmology.

AIM: To review recent innovations, challenges, and applications of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) extracted lenticule for treating ocular disorders. METHODS: A literature review was performed in the PubMed database, which was last updated on 30 December 2021. There was no limit regarding language. The authors evaluated the reference lists of the collected papers to find any relevant research. RESULTS: Due to the simplicity and accuracy of modern femtosecond lasers and the extensive development of SMILE surgery, many healthy human corneal stromal lenticules were extracted during

Topical Chloramphenicol in Ophthalmology: Old is Gold.

PURPOSE: Topical chloramphenicol is one of the most ubiquitous antibiotics used in ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery globally. It shows broad-spectrum activity against a variety of different pathogenic organisms, is well tolerated on the ocular surface and displays excellent topical pharmacokinetics. Chloramphenicol has been available for purchase over the counter in the United Kingdom since 2005. Despite this, the largest health economy in the world, The United States has had a de-facto moratorium on its use for the past 30 years. In this review, we aim to evaluate topical chloramphenico…

Optical coherence tomography angiography in neuro-ophthalmology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel, noninvasive imaging technique, which provides depth resolved visualization of microvasculature of the retina and choroid. Although OCTA has been widely used for the evaluation of a number of retinal diseases, its use in the field of neuro-ophthalmology has been less studied. In this review, we provide an update on the utility of OCTA in neuro-ophthalmic conditions. RECENT FINDINGS: Peripapillary and macular microvasculature analyses have indicated that OCTA can be a promising tool for early detection of a number of…

[Evaluation of an experiment in ophthalmology telemedicine].

PURPOSE: To meet the need for access to eye care in an area with a lack of physicians, a telemedicine workstation in ophthalmology was created. The main objective was to measure the improved access to eye care via telemedicine consultation. METHODS: No criteria of age, sex or geographical location were defined. Depending on the cause for the consultation and the results of the examinations conducted by an ophthalmic technician physically present in the center, the patient might be given a telemedicine consultation with an ophthalmologist. Eleven indicators were defined to achieve the study ob…
