Optic disc characteristics in patients with glaucoma and combined superior and inferior retinal nerve fiber layer defects.

IMPORTANCE: Eyes with initial bihemifield defects show faster progression compared with eyes with initial single-hemifield involvement, suggesting greater optic nerve susceptibility to glaucomatous damage. We hypothesized that certain disc phenotypes may exist in patients with glaucoma who have bihemispheric structural damage at the initial stage of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To identify the optic disc characteristics related to bihemispheric retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects in early-stage glaucoma. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional study of 136 patients with early-st

Analysis of differential gene expression in plurihormonal pituitary adenomas using bead-based fiber-optic arrays.

Plurihormonal pituitary adenomas (PHPAs) are defined as those pituitary adenomas secreting two or more hormones that differ in chemical composition, immunoreactivity, and biologic effects. Since the pathogenesis of these adenomas is not well understood, our study aimed to explore mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of PHPAs. We used bead-based fiber-optic arrays (Illumina Human GeneChip WG-6 v3.0) to examine the gene expression profiles in seven PHPAs compared with three normal pituitary glands. Four differentially expressed genes were chosen randomly for validation by quantitative real-tim

A comparative study of visual evoked potentials and of retinal nerve fiber layer photography in neuropathies of the optic nerve.

The degree of retinal nerve fiber loss within the papillomacular bundle in optic neuropathies was evaluated from red-free fundus photographs. Visual evoked potentials were obtained from pattern reversal with variable check sizes. A semiquantitative scale was used for the estimation of nerve fiber loss and amplitude reduction of the visual evoked potentials. A significant correlation was found between both. However, a few patients showed rather well-preserved visual evoked potentials with an atrophic nerve fiber layer. Possibly a small number of invisible remaining fibers are able to sustain ne

Qualification of infrared optical fibers and emitters for a spectrometer for in situ planetary exploration: Results from the TRIS (TRansmission and Illumination System) project.

Visible-infrared spectroscopy has played a key role in in situ planetary exploration, enabling investigation of the composition and physical properties of rocky bodies. Extending these measurements into the mid-infrared (MIR) region provides access to diagnostic spectral bands directly linked to surface composition. However, this requires optical components capable of operating under harsh space conditions. This work presents the results of the TRansmission and Illumination System (TRIS) program, aimed at qualifying infrared optical fibers and emitters for planetary spectrometers. Indium fluor…

Proof of Concept for a Quick and Highly Sensitive On-Site Detection of SARS-CoV-2 by Plasmonic Optical Fibers and Molecularly Imprinted Polymers.

The rapid spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pathogen has generated a huge international public health emergency. Currently the reference diagnostic technique for virus determination is Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) real time analysis that requires specialized equipment, reagents and facilities and typically 3-4 h to perform. Thus, the realization of simple, low-cost, small-size, rapid and point-of-care diagnostics tests has become a global priority. In response to the

MOF-SERS hybrid architecture integrated on Fiber-Optic probes for quantification of plasma dopamine in human blood.

Dopamine (DA) is an essential neurochemical marker, yet its reliable quantification in complex biofluids remains challenging for fiber-based sensors due to limited signal return and bio-interference. Here, we present a MOF-SERS hybrid architecture integrated onto a fiber-optic probe for DA detection in human plasma. The platform employs polyhedral Au@Ag nanostars coated with an ultrathin MIL-100(Fe) shell, enabling synergistic plasmonic amplification and molecular enrichment at the sensing interface. This engineered interface delivers a high SERS enhancement factor of 3.2 × 108, an ultralow de

Distributed optical fiber sensing for metal particle defect detection in GIS via frequency-swept interferometry.

Conventional detection of metal particle defects in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) mainly relies on piezoelectric (PZT) sensors, which are inadequate for distributed monitoring in modern power equipment. Although interferometric optical fiber sensors offer high sensitivity for GIS partial discharge detection, they are generally limited to single-point measurements. To address this issue, this study proposes a multiplexing method for optical fiber acoustic emission sensors based on optical frequency-scanning in a Michelson interferometric configuration. By introducing high-frequency carriers th

Achieving Highly Sensitive In Situ Detection of Trace Starch with a Hydrogel-Functionalized MZI Optical Fiber Biosensor.

To address the critical concern about trace starch residues in cleaning water within the food industry, which can lead to cross-contamination and water eutrophication, a label-free optical fiber biosensor designed for high-sensitivity, specific in situ detection of starch was proposed. The sensor was constructed as an Multimode-No-core-Multimode (MNM) structure by cascading multimode fiber (MMF) and no-core fiber (NCF), which was functionalized with a hydrogel-based sensing layer. A key innovation involved the covalent immobilization of α-amylase onto the NCF surface via a glutaraldehyde-CS cr

Mid-infrared optical parametric amplification pumped with a low-conversion fiber four-wave mixing source.

We demonstrate an optimized cascaded χ(3)-χ(2) source for picosecond mid-infrared pulse generation at 3.34 µm. A 1064 nm Yb-fiber master oscillator power amplifier system pumps a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) to generate a weak Stokes seed at 1.56 µm via four-wave mixing (FWM), which, together with residual pump light, pumps and seeds optical parametric amplification (OPA) in an MgO-doped PPLN crystal. We empirically maximize the OPA idler conversion efficiency by performing a systematic cutback of the PCF to optimize the Stokes seed power relative to the residual pump power. The optimum PCF le

Fiber-Optic Raman Sensor for Early Dental Caries Detection: Performance Evaluation and Robustness to Probe Positioning.

Early detection of dental caries remains a significant clinical challenge, as conventional diagnostic methods lack sensitivity for incipient lesions. Raman spectroscopy offers high chemical specificity for enamel characterization; however, clinical translation is hindered by the complexity of conventional polarized confocal systems. In this work, we present a Raman-based fiber-optic sensing approach for the detection and classification of dental enamel conditions, including sound, affected, and carious tissues. A custom fiber-optic probe was developed for remote measurements and evaluated agai

Miniaturized fiber-optic bolometer with reduced thermal time constant exhibiting first-order thermal dynamics.

Accurate measurement of transient radiation power is critical for plasma diagnostics in magnetic confinement fusion, where rapid radiation events require high temporal resolution and reliable signal reconstruction. Fiber-optic bolometers (FOBs) based on silicon Fabry-Perot interferometry are attractive alternatives to resistive bolometers because of their compact size, electromagnetic-interference immunity, remote sensing capability, and compatibility with high-temperature and high-vacuum environments. However, conventional FOB designs can exhibit slow and non-first-order thermal responses bec

Fiber-optic SPR sensor with layer-by-layer hydrogel-entrapped enzymes for specific glyceryl tributyrate detection.

Glyceryl tributyrate holds considerable promise for applications in intestinal health regulation and adjuvant therapy. However, conventional enzymatic assays are susceptible to lipase deactivation and environmental perturbations, often leading to signal drift and compromised analytical reliability. Accordingly, it is of considerable significance to develop a detection platform that integrates high sensitivity, robust stability, and strong resistance to interference. In this work, we propose an Ag-coated no-core fiber (NCF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for glyceryl tributyrate quantit
