Spin-Orbit-Driven Quarter Semimetals in Rhombohedral Graphene.

Semimetals exhibit intriguing characteristics attributed to the coexistence of both electrons and holes. In rhombohedral multilayer graphene, a strong trigonal warping effect gives rise to a semi-metallic state near the Fermi surface, offering unique opportunities to explore the interplay of semi-metallic properties with strong correlations and topologies. Here, the observation of quarter semimetals in rhombohedral multilayer graphene by introducing spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is reported. The semi-metallic characteristics of rhombohedral graphene manifest as nearly vanished Hall resistance and …

Nonlinear spin-orbit coupling in optical thin films.

Tunable generation of vortex beams holds relevance in various fields, including communications and sensing. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of nonlinear spin-orbit interactions in thin films of materials with second-order nonlinear susceptibility. Remarkably, the nonlinear tensor can mix the longitudinal and transverse components of the pump field. We observe experimentally our theoretical predictions in the process of second-harmonic generation from a thin film of aluminum gallium arsenide, a material platform widely spread for its role in the advancement of active, nonlinear, a…

Spin-Orbit Effects on Exciton Complexes in Diamond.

Ultrafine splittings are found in the optical absorption spectra of boron-doped diamond measured with high resolution. An analytical model of an exciton complex is developed, which permits assigning all absorption lines and sizing the interactions among the constituent charges and crystal field. We conclude that the entry of split-off holes in the acceptor-bound exciton fine structure yields two triplets separated by a spin-orbit splitting of 14.3 meV. Our findings thereby resolve a long-standing controversy [R. Sauer et al., Revised fine splitting of excitons in diamond, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, …

Theoretical spin-orbit laser cooling for AlZn molecule.

A spin-orbit coupling electronic structure study of the AlZn molecule is conducted to investigate the molecular properties of the low-lying electronic states and their feasibility toward direct laser cooling. This study uses the complete active-space self-consistent field level of theory, followed by the multireference configuration interaction method with Davidson correction (+Q). The potential energy and dipole moment curves and the spectroscopic constants are computed for the low-lying doublet and quartet electronic states in the 2S+1Λ± and Ω(±) representations. The transition dipole moment…

[Embryonic development and congenital diseases of the orbit].

Many neuroradiologists focus primarily on the central nervous system and give little attention to other regions like the eye/orbit. It is easy to be deceived by the pitfall called satisfaction of search (also abbreviated SOS), despite most congenital eye diseases being easily recognized if one is aware of them. In this article, the most common congenital orbital abnormalities are described, and their basic prenatal causes are summarized.

Enhanced superconductivity in spin-orbit proximitized bilayer graphene.

In the presence of a large perpendicular electric field, Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) features several broken-symmetry metallic pha … ields that push BLG hole wavefunctions towards WSe2, indicating that proximity-induced (Ising) spin-orbit coupling plays a key role in stabilizing the pairing. Our results pave the way for engineering robust, highly tunable and ultra-clean graphene-based superconductors.

Spin-orbit coupling induced by ascorbic acid crystals.

Some anisotropic materials form semicrystalline structures, called spherulites, when observed in a polarisation microscope, exhibit a characteristic "maltese-cross"-like pattern. While this observation has been hitherto considered as a tool to characterize these materials, we show that these patterns are associated with a strong light's spin-orbit coupling induced by the spherulite structures. We experimentally demonstrate these effects using samples of crystallized ascorbic acid and observing the creation of optical vortices in transmitted laser beams, as well as the formation of inhomogeneou…

Dumbbell-Shaped Congenital Conjunctival Cyst of the Orbit.

Congenital conjunctival cysts often occur in the medial orbit without adjacent bone destruction and have not been previously reported in a dumbbell configuration. A 46-year-old female patient presented with left proptosis and headache. A radiological study revealed a large, cystic, bilobed mass in the orbital-temporal area with an osseous defect in the lateral wall. A histological examination of the excised lesion showed that the cyst wall consisted of non-keratinized stratified epithelium with goblet cells. There was no recurrence during the follow-up. Of the previously reported 54 cases, onl…

Spin-orbit torque flash analog-to-digital converter.

Although analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are critical components in mixed-signal integrated circuits (IC), their performance has not been improved significantly over the last decade. To achieve a radical improvement (compact, low power and reliable ADCs), spintronics can be considered as a proper candidate due to its compatibility with CMOS and wide applications in storage, neuromorphic computing, and so on. In this paper, a proof-of-concept of a 3-bit spin-CMOS Flash ADC using in-plane-anisotropy magnetic tunnel junctions (i-MTJs) with spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching mechanism is design…

Tunnel Josephson Junction with Spin-Orbit/Ferromagnetic Valve.

We have theoretically studied the transport properties of the SIsNSOF structure consisting of thick (S) and thin (s) films of superconductor, an insulator layer (I), a thin film of normal metal with spin-orbit interaction (SOI) (NSO), and a monodomain ferromagnetic layer (F). The interplay between superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and spin-orbit interaction allows the critical current of this Josephson junction to be smoothly varied over a wide range by rotating the magnetization direction in the single F-layer. We have studied the amplitude of the spin valve effect and found the optimal rang…

Topological Superconductivity Based on Antisymmetric Spin-Orbit Coupling.

Topological superconductivity (TSC) has drawn much attention for its fundamental interest and application in quantum computation. An outstanding challenge is the lack of intrinsic TSC materials with a p-wave pairing gap, which has led to the development of an effective p-wave theory of coupling s-wave gap with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC). However, the RSOC-strict mechanism and materials pose still both fundamental and practical limitations. Here, we generalize this theory to antisymmetric SOC (ASOC). Using k·p perturbation theory, we demonstrate that 2D crystals, with point groups of C2,…

Osteolytic sarcoidosis of the orbit without pulmonary involvement.

A 69-year-old woman with a history of a left orbital mass presented to the emergency room with progressive breakthrough pain in her left orbit despite medical therapy. On examination, there was extraocular motility restriction with diplopia upon left supraduction. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the orbits revealed soft tissue thickening of the left medial and superior periorbita and left lacrimal fossa; bony erosion of the left frontal bone, left orbital roof, and left lamina papyracea; and bilateral mass-like enlargement of the extraocular muscles. An orbitotomy with incisional biopsy was p…

Topical Timolol for Infantile Haemangioma of the Orbit.

Infantile haemangiomas (IHs) are the most common benign tumours of the eyelid and orbits in infancy. Beta-blockers, in the form of oral propranolol, have become first-line treatment in severe cases with functionally significant or disfiguring IH. However, adverse drug reactions of oral propranolol in infants are reported in 1 in 11 and serious or potentially life-threatening systemic side effects in 1 in 38, including dyspnoea, hypotension, hyperkalaemia, hypoglycaemia, and cyanosis, therefore requiring careful and close monitoring during the course of systemic treatment. More recently, two la…
