Oregano Oil and Its Principal Component, Carvacrol, Inhibit HIV-1 Fusion into Target Cells.

Oregano essential oil has long been known for its health-promoting benefits. Here, we report its activity against viral replication. Oregano oil was found to specifically inhibit lentiviruses, such as human and simian immunodeficiency viruses (HIV and SIV), irrespective of virus tropism, but not hepatitis C virus, adenovirus 5 (ADV5), Zika virus, and influenza (H1N1) virus. Oregano oil's most abundant components, carvacrol and its isomer, thymol, were shown to block virus-target cell fusion while not perturbing other stages of the virus life cycle. We detected changes in virus particle density

The effect of some natural alternative to antibiotics on growth and changes in intestinal histology in broiler exposed to Salmonella challenge.

This study was conducted to find the effect of different feed additives on the production performance and intestinal histology in Salmonella challenged birds. A total of 600 day-old-broiler chicks (Ross 308) were assignment to 10 treatments. Each treatment was further divided into 10 replicates. The chicks were randomly divided into one of the following 10 treatments as follow: Negative control; positive control infected with Salmonella enterica subsp. typhimurium; T1, infected + avilamycin at the rate of 0.2 g/kg; T2, infected + probiotic having viable spores (2 × 107 CFU/g) of Bacillus subti

Acaricidal activity of oregano oil and its major component, carvacrol, thymol and p-cymene against Psoroptes cuniculi in vitro and in vivo.

Oregano oil possesses marked antioxidant and antimicrobial activity and is widely applied in animal husbandry. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the acaricidal activities of oregano oil and its major component, carvacrol, thymol and p-cymene against Psoroptes cuniculi in vitro and in vivo. The results revealed that oregano oil exhibited significant acaricidal effects against P. cuniculi that were dose- and time-dependent response. In in vitro test, concentrations of 0.05% and 0.02% (v/v) killed all of the mites within 1h and 6h, respectively. Moreover, 0.1mg/ml (w/v) carvacrol, 0.2

CCl4 induces tissue-type plasminogen activator in rat brain; protective effects of oregano, rosemary or vitamin E.

The high metabolic rate and relatively low antioxidant defenses of the lipid-rich brain tissue render it highly susceptible to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, whereas the implication of ROS in the pathogenesis of several diseases in the central nervous system is well-established. The plasminogen activator (PA) system is a key modulator of extracellular proteolysis, extracellular matrix remodeling and neuronal cell signaling and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of these diseases. This study evaluates the role of tissue-type PA (t-PA) in oxidative stress and the protec

Development, characterization, and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of nanocarriers based on surfactant swollen micelles that encapsulate essential oils.

This work aimed to compare the performance of two relatively underexplored methods for the swollen micelles (SMs) production as nanocarriers for essential oils (EOs). Origanum vulgare and Thymus vulgaris EOs were examined. The first method (SMs-1), involved a self-assembly process, while the second one (SMs-2), employed titration operation of an emulsion into a surfactant solution for SMs formation. Tween 80 and ethanol were used as surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively. The solubilization kinetics and the saturation concentration of EOs were determined. Particle size (measured by DLS) an…

Biocontrol of Rice Seed-Associated Fungal Pathogens Using Green Synthesis Approaches.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major cereal crop that balances the food demand of the worldwide population. The crop quality drops daily due to their exposure to biotic and abiotic stresses, especially pathogens. It needs to be improved to maintain the consumption level to cope with increasing population demands for food. The current study was designed to analyze the comparison of the effects of green synthesis approaches on pathogens associated with rice seeds. In this study, essential oils were extracted from Cymbopogon citratus, Thymus vulgaris, and Origanum vulgaris medicinal plants and used as …

Oregano essential oil alone and in combination with biogenic silver nanoparticles exhibits anti-Toxoplasma gondii activity in human trophoblastic cells.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is a globally significant zoonosis, particularly severe in immunocompromised individuals and in ocular and congenital infections. Conventional treatment with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine is limited by its toxicity, highlighting the need for safer and more effective alternatives. In this context, oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgare L., OEO) and biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNp-Bio) have emerged as promising candidates due to their vast antiparasitic activity and low toxicity. METHODS: This study evaluated the anti-T. gondii eff…

Antimicrobial activities of gaseous essential oils against Listeria monocytogenes on a laboratory medium and radish sprouts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of gaseous essential oils (EO gases) against Listeria monocytogenes on the surfaces of a laboratory medium and radish sprouts. We determined the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal lethal concentration (MLC) values of EO gases from eight EOs extracted from basil leaves, carrot seed, cinnamon bark, cinnamon leaves, clove flower buds, oregano leaves, thyme flowers (linalool), and thyme leaves (thymol) against L. monocytogenes on a nutrient agar supplemented with 1% glucose and 0.025% bromocresol purple (NGBA). An integrated in vitro antioxidant/in vivo metabolomics approach unravels the synergistic effects between oregano essential oil and vitamin C as a nutritional strategy for alleviating heat stress in rabbits.

This study investigated the synergistic antioxidant effects of oregano essential oil (OEO) and vitamin C (Vit-C) in rabbits exposed to heat stress using both in vitro and in vivo approaches. A preliminary in vitro DPPH assay demonstrated that combining half-concentrations of OEO and Vit-C yielded superior antioxidant activity compared to the full concentration of each individual compound. To test these findings in vivo, 24 adult male rabbits were allocated to four groups for 35 d under naturally occurring heat stress conditions (air temperature = 30.58 ± 1.04, relative humidity = 71.29 ± 3.83)

Diet-Dependent Chemical Profiling and Bioactivity of Otala tingitana Mucus: Antibacterial Activity, Antioxidant Capacity, and In Vivo Wound-Healing Effects.

Snail mucus is increasingly investigated as a biologically compatible source of multifunctional biomolecules for pharmaceutical and dermatological use. However, the chemical profile and biological activities of mucus from the Moroccan endemic terrestrial snail Otala tingitana remain poorly characterized. In addition, the influence of heliciculture diet on the composition and functional properties of the mucus remains unclear. Here, O. tingitana was reared for 140 days under controlled conditions and fed a basal flour diet or the same diet supplemented with 3% Rosmarinus officinalis, Origanum c…

Enhancing Meat Emulsion Quality and Storage Stability During Refrigeration Using Thyme and Oregano Essential Oil Nanoparticles.

The ability to efficiently store raw emulsion and market it as a ready-to-cook convenience meat product would be extremely advantageous to society and the global meat business. With this innovation, consumers may easily make a range of fresh emulsion-based meat products, saving time and labour. The current study was thus designed with the goal of improving the quality and storage stability of meat emulsions by using chitosan-based thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil nanoparticles as natural preservatives. The treatments included the following: T0-control; T1-em…
