Severe crowding and a dilacerated maxillary central incisor in an adolescent.

This study reports the treatment of an adolescent patient with dilacerated maxillary incisor. She complained of severe crowding with a high-positioned left upper canine. Her left central incisor had been impacted and moved to proper position at the age of eight years, resulting in a severe root dilaceration. To avoid any progression of root dilacerations and resorption in the maxillary incisor, maxillary lateral expansion and molar distalization plus multibracket appliance were selected as the best nonextraction treatment plan. The maxillary expansion and molar distalization should provide ade

Long-term stability of mandibular orthopedic repositioning.

Mandibular anterior repositioning appliances attempt to diminish temporomandibular joint pain, soft tissue noise, and myofascial discomfort by altering condyle-disc relationships. Secondary stabilization of the occlusion to this arbitrary anterior position through orthodontic tooth movement may significantly alter functional and muscular relationships. A case report is illustrated to show that as the functional environment attempted to reestablish equilibrium through adaptation, relapse occurred as the condyles "seated" posteriorly and superiorly toward their original relationship within the f

A retrospective cohort study on reasons to retain third molars.

The primary goal of this study was to identify and quantify indications for retaining third molars. This retrospective cohort study included 1682 patients (818 male, 864 female; mean age 31 years) who were referred to the University Hospitals Leuven for third molar removal. Eight reasons for retaining the third molars were identified: (1) risk of damaging adjacent structures, (2) compromised health status, (3) adequate space for eruption, (4) third molar serves as abutment tooth, (5) orthodontic reasons, (6) eruption into proper occlusion, (7) symptomless third molars in patients >30 years old

[Angle class I malocclusion in primary dentition and findings in permanent dentition--a follow-up study].

The aim of the study was to examine stability and changes in Angle Class I malocclusion from deciduous to permanent dentition in 168 subjects. All the subjects had Class I malocclusion in deciduous dentition, and were examined by the same orthodontist on two occasions during deciduous and permanent dentition. None of the subjects had received orthodontic therapy in the meantime. The results showed considerable changes from primary to permanent dentition. Crowding in primary dentition was retained in permanent dentition in 45.2% cases. In 16.2% cases it changed into normocclusion and 38.6% subj

The orthodontic-restorative interface: 2. Compensating for variations in tooth number and shape.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this second article in this series of two is to outline a variety of methods which may be used to compensate for variations in tooth shape and number using a combination of orthodontic and restorative approaches. It will also provide an overview of other areas of patient care which necessitate a multi-disciplinary orthodontic/restorative approach. The article will highlight the importance of combined planning from the outset and the close relationship between the different specialties, which must be maintained throughout treatment. The methods of compensating for variati

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 13. Repair of root resorption 4 and 8 weeks after the application of continuous light and heavy forces for 4 weeks: a microcomputed-tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: The reparative process of root absorption begins in the periodontium when orthodontic force is discontinued or reduced below a certain level. Our aim was to evaluate cementum repair at 4 and 8 weeks of retention after 4 weeks of continuous light and heavy orthodontic forces. The effects of age, tooth movement, and fluoride exposure were also investigated. METHODS: Forty patients were recruited and divided into 4 groups of 10. The maxillary first premolars were loaded with either light (25 g) or heavy (225 g) orthodontic force. After 4 weeks of loading, the maxillary left first p

Intrusion of teeth with class III furcation: a clinical, histologic and histometric study in dogs.

AIM: To assess orthodontic intrusion effects on periodontal tissues in dogs' pre-molars with class III furcations treated with open flap debridement (OFD) or with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) associated to bone autograft (BA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Class III furcations were created in the pre-molars of seven mongrel dogs. After 75 days, teeth were randomly treated with OFD or GTR/BA. After 1 month, metallic crowns were assembled on pre-molars and connected apically to mini-implants by nickel-titanium springs. Teeth were randomly assigned to orthodontic intrusion (OFD+I and GTR/BA+I) group

Long-term changes in dentoskeletal pattern in a case with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome following tongue reduction and orthodontic treatment.

Long-term changes in the dentoskeletal pattern in a 6-year-old Japanese girl with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome were demonstrated. The patient showed macroglossia, which is the most common symptom of the syndrome, protruded lower lip, mandibular protrusion and anterior open bite. The jaw base relationship improved to skeletal Class I and the molar relationship to Angle Class I at the early preadolescent period following tongue reduction and phase I orthodontic treatment using a chin cap and tongue crib. Optimum intercuspation of teeth was achieved after edgewise treatment without orthognathic su

A postretention study of patients presenting with a maxillary median diastema.

The purpose of this study was to assess postretention stability of maxillary midline diastema closure, to search for predictors of relapse, and to test for associations between relapse and other postretention changes. The sample consisted of 35 patients with pretreatment diastemas ranging from 0.9 mm to 3.0 mm (mean 1.4, SD = 0.5) following eruption of the maxillary canines. Data were gathered from treatment charts, study models, periapical radiographs, and cephalograms taken pretreatment, posttreatment, and 1 to 26 years postretention (mean 11.4, SD = 6.4). Measurable diastema relapse was obs

Retained primary teeth in STAT3 hyper-IgE syndrome: early intervention in childhood is essential.

BACKGROUND: STAT3 hyper-IgE syndrome (STAT3-HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency that clinically overlaps with atopic dermatitis. In addition to eczema, elevated serum-IgE, and recurrent infections, STAT3-HIES patients suffer from characteristic facies, midline defects, and retained primary teeth. To optimize dental management we assessed the development of dentition and the long-term outcomes of dental treatment in 13 molecularly defined STAT3-HIES patients using questionnaires, radiographs, and dental investigations. RESULTS: Primary tooth eruption was unremarkable in all STAT3-HIES pat

An impacted central incisor due to supernumerary teeth: a multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: Hyperdontia is a disorder of odontogenesis characterised by excess teeth. Many complications can be associated with supernumerary teeth, such as crowding, tooth displacement, diastema, deep caries, retention or impaction, delayed eruption or ectopic eruption of adjacent teeth, aesthetic problems, neuralgic manifestations, root resorption of adjacent teeth, and dentigerous cyst formation with significant bone destruction. Treatment of hyperdontia depends on the area and number of supernumerary teeth, and also on the presence of pathologic processes that can affect them and/or the te

Mandibular premolar transplantation to replace missing maxillary anterior teeth: A multidisciplinary approach.

One of the most challenging problems for orthodontists is that of multiple missing maxillary teeth in a growing patient. In many patients, a good treatment option is autotransplantation. This case report describes the multidisciplinary treatment of an 11-year-old girl with regional odontodysplasia affecting the maxillary right and left central incisors, and congenitally missing maxillary left lateral incisor and canine. Autotransplantation of the mandibular second premolars to the affected area was combined with orthodontic space closure, and the transplanted premolars were reshaped and restor

Role of dental hardware in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma in the low-risk nonsmoker nondrinker population.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in nonsmokers and nondrinkers remains poorly characterized. We hypothesized that these patients had prior exposure to metallic dental hardware. METHODS: We utilized a questionnaire querying the lifetime oral health status of 54 patients. Demographics and extensive oral health history were collected. RESULTS: The majority of patients (74%) had prior exposure to metallic dental hardware. The younger population with almost exclusively oral tongue cancer had a high prevalence of metallic orthodontic braces (40%) within 15 years before

Wisdom teeth removal and anterior alignment stability after orthodontic treatment-a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Tertiary crowding is common after orthodontic treatment. The role of third molars in their development remains a subject of controversy. We aim to evaluate whether third molar removal affects long-term anterior alignment after orthodontic treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Manual searches reference lists of included studies, selected orthodontic journals, and recent reviews. Included studies specifically addressed the following PICOT question: PICOT: In patients who do not wear retention devices

Conservative orthodontic-surgical management of a mandibular premolar impaction associated with a dentigerous cyst: A case report.

RATIONALE: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common odontogenic cysts and are frequently associated with impacted permanent teeth. Conventional management typically involves enucleation with extraction of the involved tooth, which often leads to tooth loss and alveolar bone resorption. This case illustrates a conservative surgical orthodontic protocol that preserved the impacted tooth, maintained alveolar bone support, and corrected the malocclusion. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 15-year-old male presented with the chief complaint of dental crowding and facial asymmetry. Clinical examination reveal

Some periodontal tissue reactions to orthodontic tooth movement in monkeys.

The purpose of the experiment reported was to study soft tissue changes at teeth which were orthodontically moved into areas with varying thickness and quality of periodontal tissues. The maxillary central incisors and first premolars in 5 adult monkeys were used as experimental teeth. 6 months prior to the start of the orthodontic treatment phase, the maxillary second premolars were extracted. By surgical means, areas with varying width of the keratinized gingiva were established in the incisor and premolar region. Following a clinical baseline examination which involved assessments of gingiv
