INTRODUCTION: The management of impacted, unerupted, or malpositioned mandibular second molars with orthodontic therapy requires special attention in order to achieve normal anatomic positioning within the dental arch. We present a surgical approach to managing these teeth combining exposure and surgically-assisted forced eruption.
METHODS: This retrospective single-group cohort study followed 260 impacted mandibular second molars. The molars were exposed and surgically uprighted. An orthodontic bracket was bonded to aid in orthodontic traction, and the wound was packed to prevent soft tissue

BACKGROUND: While different levels of root resorption may occur in orthodontic treatment, several preventive approaches have been reported. Nevertheless, little is known about the effect of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) on root repair during orthodontic tooth movement.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of EMD on root resorption repair following the application of orthodontic force.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A force of 100 g was exerted for 14 days on the left maxillary first molars of twenty 10-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats divided into the EMD and control groups (n = 10 per group). In the EMD

This article focuses on on the presentation and management 9 adult patients who experienced complications because of their maxillary or mandibular fixed retainers 5-33 years after orthodontic treatment. Such complications include the development of an anterior crossbite, open bite, incisal cant, and twist- and x-effects. The detrimental effects on periodontal health were highlighted, especially in the mandibular canines. A range of fixed retainer types was identified, including flexible spiral wire bonded to 4 maxillary or 6 mandibular anterior teeth, rigid wire bonded to mandibular canines on

Orthodontic treatment involves the use of apparatuses that impairs oral hygiene making patients susceptible to periodontal diseases and caries. To prevent increased antimicrobial resistance A-PDT has shown itself a feasible option. The aim of this investigation was to assess the efficiency of A-PDT employing 1,9-Dimethyl-Methylene Blue zinc chloride double salt - DMMB as a photosensitizing agent combined with red LED irradiation (λ640 ± 5 ηm) against oral biofilm of patients undertaking orthodontic treatment. Twenty-one patients agreed to participate. Four biofilm collections were carried out

Foreign bodies embedded in the maxillofacial region following traumatic injuries pose a significant challenge to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. These retained objects may become a source of persistent pain, infection, and other complications. Early diagnosis can be achieved through the use of computed tomography (CT), which facilitates accurate localization of the foreign body. Once identified, prompt removal is recommended to prevent further morbidity. Here, we report a case in which early diagnosis of a foreign body embedded within the maxillofacial soft tissues enabled its successful retr

Treatment of horizontally and deeply impacted mandibular molars is challenging for both orthodontists and oral surgeons because of the limited access and anchorage control. We report on two patients who had horizontally and mesially impacted mandibular second molars (MM2s). Both patients were treated by a surgical orthodontic approach, and the crowns of the impacted teeth were brought into the arches by closed forced eruption. Mesially impacted MM2s were uprighted with orthodontic microimplants, inserted in the retromolar area, and then moved into their ideal position. The first patient was in

BACKGROUND: Scissor bite is a rare malocclusion that often leads to minor facial asymmetry. An orthodontic and orthopaedic correction is advisable in young patients to prevent subsequent temporomandibular diseases requesting maxillofacial intervention.
CASE REPORT: In this case report a 8-year-old girl in mixed dentition with unilateral left scissor bite was treated with a modified Rapid Palatal Expander. To modify an overexpanded maxilla (width 39 mm measured between both upper first molars) the device was used to close rather than to expand, without need of patient compliance. Orthodontic c

AIM: Dental malocclusions present the third-highest prevalence among oral pathologies. The occlusion is evaluated in primary, mixed and permanent dentition. Most orthodontic patients are treated in the early permanent dentition. Early detection of dental anomalies is important to prevent complications and can have short- and long-term benefits. The aepidemiological data on the prevalence of malocclusion are an important determinant in planning appropriate orthodontic services. Dentists have the responsibility to recognise, diagnose, and treat or refer anomalies. Data from previous studies show

The undesired movement of anchor teeth, and relapse of previously moved teeth, are major clinical problems in orthodontics. Dental implants are increasingly used to preserve anchorage, but these are costly and require invasive surgical procedures. An alternative strategy for maintaining anchorage may be the use of biological inhibitors of osteoclastic bone resorption. In the present study, we investigated the relative efficacy of pamidronate vs. osteoprotegerin (OPG) in inhibiting bone resorption and tooth movement, using a new orthodontic model in mice in which maxillary molars are moved for

Involvement of the temporomandibular joints in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis usually leads to destruction of the mandibular condyles with consistent growth disturbances and facial anomalies. Due to its frequently silent course, temporomandibular arthritis tends to be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. In addition to drug therapy, orthodontics and physiotherapy are essential to prevent further progression and restore lost temporomandibular function.

Fourteen impacted teeth in thirteen patients aged 9 to 17 years were either repositioned or transplanted, followed by postoperative orthodontic treatment. Successful results were achieved in twelve of the teeth. In one tooth, ankylosis of the root prevented a successful outcome, and deficient bone healing of the alveolar process led to an unsuccessful result in a second tooth.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous soft tissue grafting is indicated in thin gingival biotypes before orthodontic proclination or labial movements to increase the keratinized gingiva and prevent gingival recession. However, its effect on local alveolar bone remodeling is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of autogenous soft tissue grafting on local alveolar bone after orthodontic proclination or labial movements.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with a thin scalloped gingival biotype, narrow keratinized gingiva, or thin cortical bone requiring orthodontic proclination or labial moveme

We present a clinical case of tooth-surface loss affecting the palatal surfaces of the upper incisors, caused by prolonged pregnancy-induced vomiting. The patient was successfully treated, first orthodontically and then with indirect composite palatal veneers. As dental practitioners, we should be aware of this problem when screening pregnant patients, as early diagnosis and prevention are important.

BACKGROUND: The formation of white spots, which represent early carious lesions, is a major issue with fixed orthodontics. The addition of remineralizing agents to orthodontic adhesives may prevent the formation of white spots. The aim of this study was to produce a composite orthodontic adhesive combined with nano-bioactive glass-silver (nBG@Ag) for bracket bonding to enamel and to investigate its cytotoxicity, antimicrobial activity, remineralization capability, and bond strength.
METHODS: nBG@Ag was synthesized using the sol-gel method, and characterized using transmission electron microsc

Accidental ingestion or aspiration of foreign bodies is considered as a medical emergency in dentistry. Despite their rare occurrence, accidental ingestions are associated with various complications and morbidity, thereby necessitating prevention of their incidence along with early and effective management. Herein, we report a case of accidental swallowing of an orthodontic molar band in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate and its management.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a critical aspect of dental treatment that requires the precise control of bone remodeling processes. Hypertension (HTN) can affect the effectiveness of OTM. Salt-sensitive hypertension (SSHTN) is of particular concern due to its detrimental effects on bone health, potentially altering orthodontic outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of SSHTN on OTM using a mouse model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male mice were divided into a normal and an SSHTN group. The SSHTN model was generated by administering N(ω)-nitro-l-arginine meth
