BACKGROUND: In 1999 the first endo-exo femoral prosthesis (EEFP) was implanted in Germany in a patient who had suffered a traumatic above-knee amputation. This procedure involves a skeletally anchored exoprosthetic device that is inserted into the residual femur. The distal part of the implant protrudes transcutaneously and allows attachment to a prosthetic limb which provides direct force transmission to the external prosthetic components. The technique originated from dental implantology and helps to avoid possible problems resulting from treatment of amputated limbs using socket prostheses.

An implant was malpositioned and osseointegrated at the maxillary sinus floor with no complications. However, unexpected bone formation over the implant made the implant nonfunctional. The case of a patient with high-flow arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) affecting the mandible and lower face is presented. The patient had undergone surgical resection, sclerotherapy, and transcatheter embolization over the course of 16 years. Current literature reports that surface acid etching can improve bone--implant contact (BIC). Until recently the options for reconstruction of the microtic ear were unsatisfactory and the ear was often left alone. With recent advances, both autologous rib reconstruction and osseointegration produce good quality results. The fibula osteocutaneous flap with osseointegrated implants was used for reconstruction of a total maxillectomy defect. We have achieved satisfactory reconstruction of three-dimensional facial structure, orbit support, and a functional prosthesis. Our procedure restored the patient's masticatory function of the maxilla and enabled good speech and a natural facial appearance. A very high quality of function was obtained without any complications, but long-term follow-up is necessary for maintenance of the implants.

OBJECTIVE: We report here on a patient with unilateral cleft lip and alveolus who underwent dental rehabilitation of cleft alveolus using an osseointegrated implant after cleft repair by periosteoplasty. The patient, whose lateral incisor was congenitally missing, had periosteoplasty, followed by excellent bone formation at the cleft alveolus within 2 years. After the completion of orthodontic alignment of the maxillary dental arch, a Brånemark single-tooth implant was placed into the bone-formed alveolus.

Twenty-three patients with Kennedy Class I mandibular dentition were supplied with prostheses in the posterior parts of the mandible. On one side they were given a prosthesis supported by two implants (prosthesis Type I) and on the other side they received a prosthesis supported by one implant and one natural tooth (prosthesis Type II).
