Development and validation of a nomogram for predicting heterotopic ossification following spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Heterotopic ossification (HO) following spinal cord injury (SCI) can severely compromise patient mobility and quality of life. Precise identification of SCI patients at an elevated risk for HO is crucial for implementing early clinical interventions. While the literature presents diverse correlations between HO onset and purported risk factors, the development of a predictive model to quantify these risks is likely to bolster preventive approaches. This study is designed to develop and validate a nomogram-based predictive model that estimates the likelihood of HO in SCI patients, ut

Coding and noncoding RNA profile of human heterotopic ossifications - Risk factors and biomarkers.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) means the formation of bone in muscles and soft tissues, such as ligaments or tendons. HO could have a genetic history or develop after a traumatic event, as a result of muscle injury, fractures, burns, surgery, or neurological disorders. Many lines of evidence suggest that the formation of HO is related to the pathological differentiation of stem or progenitor cells present within soft tissues or mobilized from the bone marrow. The cells responsible for the initiation and progression of HO are generally called HO precursor cells. The exact mechanisms behind the d

Living with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva: Radiological Images of a Patient with Extensive Heterotopic Ossification.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an exceptionally rare genetic disorder characterized by the progressive formation of heterotopic bone in soft tissues. Here, we present the radiological findings of an 18-year-old female diagnosed with FOP who had severe spinal and right-upper-limb abnormalities. Her SF-36 scores suggested significant impairment in physical function, affecting work and other regular daily activities. Radiographic evaluation with X-rays and CT scans revealed scoliosis and total fusion of almost all levels of the spine, with only a few disc spaces spared. A large ma

Embolization followed by resection of the heterotopic hip joint ossification with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification of large joints, such as knees and hips, has been reported after spinal cord injury, possibly leading to decreased activity of daily living due to a limited range of motion of the affected joint. Therefore, heterotopic ossification resection is performed to improve the range of motion, but it might cause massive bleeding as a complication. METHODS: In this case, the patient had a history of spinal cord injury and developed heterotopic ossification after the left hip injury. He had left hip ankylosis and could not transfer to a wheelchair by himself; theref

A self-amplifying loop of YAP and SHH drives formation and expansion of heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs as a common complication after injury or in genetic disorders. The mechanisms underlying HO remain incompletely understood, and there are no approved prophylactic or secondary treatments available. Here, we identify a self-amplifying, self-propagating loop of Yes-associated protein (YAP)-Sonic hedgehog (SHH) as a core molecular mechanism underlying diverse forms of HO. In mouse models of progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH), a disease caused by null mutations in GNAS, we found that Gnas-/- mesenchymal cells secreted SHH, which induced osteoblast different

A rare case of a cystic renal mass with heterotopic ossification and a mini literature review.

INTRODUCTION: It is a challenge to make accurate pre-surgical diagnosis for renal tumors. This study is to report the findings, management, and outcome of one rare case of ossification in a cystic renal mass. We present and discuss the pathological characteristics, radiologic features, and treatment alternatives of the patient. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 38 years old female patient had intermittent epigastric pain and microscopic hematuria for two months. Computerized tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) showed a mass with rough edge and dense calcification in the upper pole

Heterotopic ossification in the post cruciate ligament of the knee: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is noted most frequently in periarticular muscles and has not yet been reported in the cruciate ligaments of the knee. We present a rare case of symptomatic ossification of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman had a 2-year history of knee pain that was getting worse during knee motion and had restricted knee motion for 1 year. X-rays could not show the lesion clearly. Multi-planar computed tomography demonstrated ossification within the PCL with mild osteoarthritic changes and excluded any other intra-articular

Heterotopic Ossification of the Inferior Vena Cava Wall: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Masses of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are very diverse, most of which are thrombus and tumor thrombus, whereas heterotopic ossification of IVC has never been reported. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature lamellar bone outside normal bones and in soft tissues. Some researchers believe that HO is a manifestation of vascular calcification. Here we present a case of HO of the inferior vena cava (IVC) wall. A 68 year old female patient complaining hypertension and palpitation and diagnosed with a retroperitoneal mass was found to have a primary mass of the inferior vena cava w

Radiation therapy for the prevention of heterotopic ossification: Efficacy and toxicity of single fraction radiotherapy.

Numerous nonmalignant diseases can be treated with radiation therapy (RT). Among them, Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is a benign condition resulting from several causes that can be successfully managed with ionizing radiation. More often seen in the hip area after major surgical procedures, HO is of major concern as it can lead to functional disorders, pain and even to joint ankylosis. We retrospectively analyzed the outcome of therapeutic irradiation for the prevention of HO in 14 patients treated in our hospital between 2005 and 2011. All patients were irradiated with a dose ranging from 7 t

Cervical Total Disc Replacement and Heterotopic Ossification: A Review of Literature Outcomes and Biomechanics.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) immobilizes surgical segments and can lead to the development of adjacent segment degeneration and adjacent segment disease. Thus, cervical total disc replacement (CTDR) has been developed with the aim to preserve the biomechanics of spine. However, heterotopic ossification (HO), a complication following CTDR, can reduce the segmental range of motion (ROM) and defects the motion-preservation benefit of CTDR. The pathological process of HO in CTDR remains unknown. HO has been suggested to be a self-defense mechanism in response to the non-physiolog

Therapeutic strategies for elbow ankylosis due to heterotopic ossification in patients with severe burns.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs frequently in the elbow in burn patients, and extends beyond the anatomical structure. HO of the elbow can cause joint contracture and adversely affect activities of daily living.Currently, there is no effective prophylaxis for HO as the precise underlying mechanism remains unknown. Therefore, there is no choice but to treat HO after it has developed. To date, however, no effective standard treatment has been reported, and therefore treatment methods vary between different facilities. Surgical resection is widely accepted as the only therapeutic

Hints on transcriptional control of essential players in heterotopic ossification of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva.

Signaling of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) pathway is influenced by the level of expression of its components, in particular receptors, intracellular molecules and target genes which largely depends on gene transcription. One peculiar aspect of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) relates to the cell types in which the genetic mutation exerts its effects, then not only those involved in the heterotopic ossification processes but also others that participate in the inflammatory phases preceding and triggering heterotopic ossification. Such effects are in part detectable as variati

Does Excision of Heterotopic Ossification of the Elbow Result in Satisfactory Patient-Rated Outcomes?

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of heterotopic ossification (HO) of the elbow is challenging and fraught with complications. Patients who sustain direct trauma to the elbow joint, the central nervous system, and thermal burns are at increased risk for development of HO. There is a paucity of studies and reports on patient's self-evaluation after the excision of the heterotopic ossification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study assessed outcomes after excision of heterotopic ossification around the elbow in a cohort of ten patients operated from 2012 to 2015. The outcome assessment was done

Heterotopic ossification of the long head of the triceps after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) around shoulder arthroplasty is a frequent finding with unclear clinical relevance. This study evaluated the incidence, relevance, and predisposing factors of HO in the long head of the triceps tendon after reverse shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted to identify patients who had a reverse shoulder arthroplasty performed between 2008 and 2012. Patient demographics, implant types, and diagnoses were noted. Three fellowship-trained shoulder/elbow surgeons independently evaluated postoperative Grashey radiographs using

Heterotopic Ossification and Entrapment of the Tibial Nerve Within the Tarsal Tunnel: A Case Report.

Heterotopic ossification has been reported to occur after musculoskeletal trauma (including orthopedic procedures). This has been known to cause nerve entrapment syndromes and persistent pain, limiting joint mobility. We present a case of a 19-year old female collegiate athlete who had previously undergone ankle arthroscopy and arthrotomy to remove 2 ossicles. At approximately 1 year postoperatively, the patient developed pain when planting and pivoting her foot. Imaging revealed a radiodense lesion at the posteromedial ankle consistent with heterotopic ossification and entrapment of the tibia

Heterotopic ossification of the hips in a patient with Guillain Barre syndrome demonstrated on SPECT/CT.

A 55-year-old man developed bilateral hip pain following admission with Guillain Barre syndrome. Hip radiographs showed minor degenerative changes. 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy showed bilateral abnormal activity extending from the acetabula to the trochanteric regions. SPECT/CT localized the abnormal activity to the soft tissues surrounding the hips. Heterotopic ossification is a rare complication of Guillain Barre syndrome.

Could insertion of the particles that induce osteolysis be a new treatment option in heterotopic ossification?

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of the bone outside the skeletal system, it is a common complication of surgery or trauma. The abnormal deposition or precipitation of calcium phosphate in tissues may be massive and clinically significant sometimes. Severe ossification often reduce joint function and induce pain. Unfortunately, to date, there is no satisfactory treatment available yet. Nowadays, periprosthetic osteolysis induced by wear debris is the most widely accepted cause of aseptic loosening after total joint replacement. A large number of researches have identified metal p
