Vasopressin has been used with increasing frequency to control gastrointestinal bleeding, the beneficial effect being attributed to marked splanchnic vasoconstriction. Because vasopressin may result in impaired cardiac function and because other potent vasoconstrictive substances have been shown to increase the pulmonary shunt and decrease arterial oxygenation, this study was undertaken to determind the effect of vasopressin on oxygen availability. Ten healthy anesthetized mechanically ventilated dogs received a five hour intravenous vasopressin infusion, 0.005 U/kg/min. The heart rate decreas

The O2 cost of breathing has been calculated in awake and anesthetized dogs breathing spontaneously. Respiratory variables were measured in tracheostomized dogs in the standing position, while supported in a canvas sling, at room temperatures between 20 and 23 degrees C. Minute ventilation ranged between 3 and 53 liters/min while VO2 ranged from 61 to 686 ml/min. VE, VO2 and f varied considerably from measurement to measurement even though body temperatures and experimental conditions changed very little. VO2 increased with VE: VO2 = 10.2 VE + 58.4 r = 0.94. A cubic polynomial equation was als

1. Voluntary hyperventilation during rest and in the recumbent position induces a fall in H+ concentration, PCO2 and PO2 in mixed venous blood and in the blood of the coronary sinus. 2. In 7 of 12 patients the arterio-venous O2 difference increased by more than 10% of the control value (mean increase 21%). At the same time the O2 extraction of the myocard increased (mean increase 17%) in these subjects. Blood pressure and pulse rate varied only slightly in these experiments. 3. Chest pain and angina pectoris due to hyperventilation are the result of impaired myocardial O2 supply, a finding whi

Tissue hypoxia is an essential feature in the pathophysiology of hypovolaemic shock. In traumatized patients gross injury and haemorrhage may induce both general and local oxygen deficiency. Prolonged hypoxia can induce irreversible changes in tissues, inhibit wound healing, and increase susceptibility to infection. Correction of cardiac index and arterial PO2 does not necessarily ensure a normal tissue PO2, and therefore, arterial oxygen tension provides an inadequate index of peripheral tissue oxygenation. There are two methods currently available for clinical measurements of tissue gases: 1

Oxygen dissociation studies were carried out on haemoglobin E (Hb E) at both high and low haemoglobin concentrations. Oxygen affinities of fresh red cells from three people homozygous for Hb E and from one with Hb E-beta thalassaemia (Hb-E trait/beta-thal trait) were low in three out of four patients studied, while the oxygen affinity of red cells from an individual with Hb-E was normal 2,3-DPG concentration in the fresh cells from the people with homozygous Hb E or Hb-E trait/beta-thal trait which showed low oxygen affinities were elevated sufficiently to account for the shifts observed. When
