Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a parasitic infection caused by Leishmania protozoa and transmitted by sandfly bites, can be classified into Old World and New World subtypes. We report a case of a 2-year-old female who developed complex CL after travel to Panama. Ultimately, successful treatment required two rounds of liposomal amphotericin B. We report this case for its challenging clinical course and management.

A 48-year-old man who had returned from Panama 5 weeks prior presented with fever, dysuria, hematuria, flank pain, and suprapubic pain and was found to have a prostatic abscess. Abscess fluid obtained during transurethral drainage grew Burkholderia pseudomallei. Blood cultures remained negative, and imaging did not show any other visceral abscess. This presentation of primary prostatic melioidosis is extremely rare in this region.

Tick-borne rickettsiosis is an important emerging disease in Panama; to date, there have been 12 confirmed cases, including eight fatalities. The authors review the clinical reports of twelve children with craniocerebral trauma admitted to the Children's Hospital of Panama from January 1979 to March 1987 who underwent neurosurgery for supratentorial acute extradural hematoma. The age range was 7 months to 14 years. Findings in relation to age, cause of injury, location of the extradural hematoma, lucid interval period, mortality rate, prognosis, plain roentgenograms, cerebral angiograms, and computerized axial tomography are discussed.

The authors present their results in a group of 112 patients studied by transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies. The study was performed in Panama at the Urologic and Ultrasound Clinic of the Consultorios Médicos Paitilla in a period of 9 months. Histologic confirmation was obtained for all patients. 29 prostate cancers were diagnosed, 9 foci of dysplasia, 6 foci of inflammation and 68 benign prostatic hyperplasia. No serious complications were reported in this study. Some technical aspects of the procedure are presented.

The first rotavirus vaccine was associated with a small, albeit statistically significant, risk of intussusception in immunized infants. Before results of new vaccine studies are available, we need to define the real background risk of intussusception in participating countries. A 5-year retrospective study conducted in Panama found an average rate of 1 case per 3300 infants younger than 1 year of age, with substantial yearly variations ranging from 1:2500 to 1:5000.
