Pandemic-related stress and suicide risk among healthcare professionals during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Depression and suicide are common in the hospital workplace. Extreme stress is more likely in periods of major crisis. METHODS: To determine the stress levels and sources of stress for healthcare providers, a survey was administered to approximately 3000 clinicians in a single healthcare system in April 2022, gathering both quantitative and free-text responses. RESULTS: A total of 485 clinicians completed the questionnaire. Their responses revealed a high level of pandemic-related, personal, and professional stress, as well as burnout. Top stressors included staffing issues, incr

Temporal patterns of influenza A subtypes and B lineages across age in a subtropical city, during pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic seasons.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal patterns of influenza A subtypes and B lineages in tropical/subtropical regions across age have remained to be explored … . Changes of periodicity and age shifts should be considered in public health response to influenza pandemics and epidemics. In addition, it is suggested to use quadrivalent influenza vaccines to provide protection against both influenza B lineages.

Pandemic vaccination strategies and influenza severe outcomes during the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 pandemic and the post-pandemic influenza season: the Nordic experience.

During the 2009/10 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 pandemic, the five Nordic countries adopted different approaches to pandemic vaccination. We compared pandemic vaccination strategies and severe influenza outcomes, in seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11 in these countries with similar influenza surveillance systems. We calculated the cumulative pandemic vaccination coverage in 2009/10 and cumulative incidence rates of laboratory confirmed A(H1N1)pdm09 infections, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and deaths in 2009/10 and 2010/11. We estimated incidence risk ratios (IRR) in a Poisson regression model to co

Determinants of trust among ethnic minority community members towards community-based organisations and leaders during pandemics and other emergencies in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Effective pandemic plans must be applicable to all members of our communities. However, people from multicultural communities with diverse language needs often engage with a wide range of organisations and individuals when seeking information during a pandemic or health emergency. Despite this, there is limited evidence on levels of trust and the influence of these sources on promoting community engagement with pandemic preparedness activities in high-income settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among members of ethnic minority communities in Australia who self

Clinical and Electrophysiological Characteristics of Guillain-Barré Syndrome Across Pre-Pandemic, Pandemic, and Post-Pandemic Periods: A Ten-Year Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic markedly altered patterns of exposure to respiratory and gastrointestinal pathogens, healthcare-seeking behaviors, and environmental immune triggers. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), an immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy frequently preceded by an infectious event, may therefore exhibit changes in clinical presentation or electrophysiologic subtype distribution. However, it remains unclear whether the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of GBS have changed across pandemic periods. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included adults diagnosed w

Functional Tic-like Behaviors: From the COVID-19 Pandemic to the Post-Pandemic Era.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been multiple reports about an unforeseen surge in adolescents and young adults exhibiting sudden onset functional tic-like behaviors. This phenomenon has been mainly associated with the female gender and occasionally after exposure to social media content featuring similar patterns of functional tic-like behaviors. A significant portion of these individuals have been directed to specialist clinics for movement disorders with initial misdiagnoses of late-onset refractory Tourette syndrome. Distinguishing between rapid onset functional tic-like behaviors

A parallel and silent emerging pandemic: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) amid COVID-19 pandemic.

World is in the middle of the pandemic (COVID-19), caused by SARS-COV-2 virus, which is a significant global health crisis after Spanish influenza in the beginning of 20th century. Progressive drastic steps have been enforced to minimize the transmission of the disease. Likewise, in the current years, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been referred as one of the potential perils to the global economy and health; however, it is now veiled under the present pandemic. During the current pandemic, AMR to available frontline antibiotics may prove fatal and life threatening to bacterial and fungal

Estimates of Population-level Palliative Care Needs in the UK: Pre-Pandemic and During the Pandemic

Abstract Background: Existing estimates of palliative care need were produced before the COVID-19 pandemic and estimates across the UK nations had methodological differences. We aim to produce updated, population-level estimates of palliative care need for each of the four UK nations and explore how these changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study design was a descriptive analysis of routine data. We used a well-established, diagnosis-based methodology which produced minimal estimates of palliative care based on underlying causes of death, intermediate estimates using underlying

Post-Pandemic Stress Disorder as an Effect of the Epidemiological Situation Related to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

According to many experts in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, the destabilization resulting from the coronavirus pandemic may not be as noticeable now as it will be after the pandemic period is over. Undoubtedly, the fact that the surrounding reality is standardized and normalized by many at present contributes to this. In the opinion of many researchers, the scale and degree of trauma experienced by society will only be noticed by many once the pandemic is over. Many also suggest that we will experience post-pandemic stress disorder. This literature review aims to bring together in on

Narcolepsy and Pandemic Influenza Vaccination: What We Need to Know to be Ready for the Next Pandemic.

After the initial identification of the H1N1 pandemic influenza strain in Mexico in April 2009 and its subsequent global spread, several monovalent influenza vaccines were developed as part of the pandemic response. Three of these vaccines, Pandemrix, Arepanrix and Focetria were adjuvanted. One of these, the AS03-adjuvanted Pandemrix vaccine, was primarily used in Europe. Following widespread Pandemrix vaccine administration in Scandinavia, an increased risk of narcolepsy was noted in observational studies. Subsequently, this increased risk was also reported in other European countries as well

Spatiotemporal dynamics of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in Brazil during the pandemic and post-pandemic periods.

Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was responsible for the first global flu pandemic in 21st century affecting all the world. In Brazil, A(H1N1)pdm09 is still circulating as a seasonal virus, causing deaths every year. Nevertheless, the viral diffusion process that yearly seeds new influenza strains in the country was not investigated yet. The aim of the current study was to describe the phylodynamics and phylogeography of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in Brazil between 2009 and 2014. Neuraminidase sequences from Brazil and other regions of the World were retrieved and analyzed. Bayesian phylogeographic and phyl

Planning for pandemic influenza: effect of a pandemic on the supply and demand for blood products in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Influenza causes episodic pandemics when viral antigens shift in ways that elude herd immunity. Avian influenza A H5N1, currently epizootic in bird populations in Asia and Europe, appears to have pandemic potential. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The virology of influenza, the history of the 1918 pandemic, and the structure of the health care and the blood transfusion systems are briefly reviewed. Morbidity and mortality experience from the 1918 pandemic are projected onto the current health care structure to predict points of failure that are likely in a modern pandemic. RESULTS: Blo…

Integration of Developed Mathematical Model for Predicting and Monitoring the Spread of Epidemics and Pandemics: The Case of COVID-19 in Rwanda.

This study presents a novel, context-specific mathematical modeling framework for predicting and monitoring COVID-19 transmission in Rwanda, addressing the increasing demand for integrated and data-driven public health decision-support tools. The model incorporates localized epidemiological dynamics, transmission pathways, and major intervention measures, including lockdowns, vaccination, quarantine, and home-based care, which is considered a critical factor influencing disease transmission. Using a system of differential equations, the framework models transition among infected, home-based ca
