Inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) is a benign neoplasm characterized by a downgrowth of the urothelium beneath the surface of morphologically normal urothelial cells; however, the molecular features of IUP and their association with clinicopathological characteristics are unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mutational landscape, clinicopathological features, genotype-phenotype associations, and spread patterns of IUP. We performed targeted next-generation sequencing of 39 consecutive IUP cases, the largest series investigated to date, and identified oncogenic driver mutations

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical and prognostic behaviors of sinonasal papillomas.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with sinonasal papilloma were reviewed between 2001 and 2016 at a tertiary rhinology practice. Using pathology-specific electronic medical record software, patients diagnosed with sinonasal papilloma were identified. Four subcategories of this lesion were identified: inverting (IP), exophytic (EP) oncocytic (OP) and inverting + exophytic (IP + EP) papillomas.
RESULTS: A total of 107 patients were identified with unique sinonasal papilloma diagnoses. Of these, the majority were d

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a common sinus neoplasm with a probability of malignant transformation. Nasal polyps (NP) are the most frequent masses in the sinus. The classification of IP and NP using computed tomography (CT) is highly significant for preoperative recognition, treatment, and clinical examination. Few visible differences exist between IP and NP in CT, making it a challenge for otolaryngologists to distinguish between them. This study intended to classify IP and NP using a neural network and analyze its ability to discriminate the differences.
METHODS: IP and NP in CT

Endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach is a promising technique for treating various maxillary sinus diseases because it allows for adequate visualization and wide access to the entire maxillary sinus. However, the incidence of absent prelacrimal recess (PLR) has ranged from 7% to 17.5%, implying that there is a limitation for the application of EPLA in this population. Here, a male patient with concomitant Krouse T2 maxillary inverted papilloma and mycetoma presenting with unilateral nasal obstruction and blood-tinged secretion is described. The presurgical computed tomography showed no reces

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To compare structured computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scores for differentiating inverted papilloma (IP) from other benign and malignant causes of unilateral sinonasal opacification.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 179 patients with histopathologically confirmed unilateral sinonasal opacification were classified as IP spectrum (n = 72) or non-IP (n = 107). Two blinded readers independently assessed CT (n = 172) and MRI (n = 109; both modalities, n = 102) using prespecified IP scores; Reader 1's final ass

Objective:To investigate the expression of HPV 6/11 in NIP tissues and evaluate the adjuvant therapeutic effect of interferon-α gel on HPV-positive NIP patients. Methods:Forty-two newly diagnosed Nasal Inverted Papilloma(NIP) patients were included, and the expression of HPV6/11 in tissues was detected using fluorescence in situ hybridization with specific probes. Twenty-two HPV-positive patients were randomly divided into an interferon treatment group(n=11) and a control group(n=11). Both groups underwent endoscopic tumor resection, with the treatment group receiving local application of inte

A rare case of dual malignancy involving sinonasal basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) and contralateral temporal bone carcinoma is presented in a female patient in her early 50s. With a prior history of sinonasal inverted papilloma excision 3 and 5 years earlier, she presented with nasal obstruction, forehead swelling and left ear symptoms. Imaging revealed aggressive sinonasal and temporal bone masses with intracranial and orbital involvement. The patient underwent surgical resection of the sinonasal tumour and biopsy of the temporal bone lesion. Histopathology confirmed BSCC (basaloid s

PURPOSE: With the aid of ever-increasing computing resources, many deep learning algorithms have been proposed to aid in diagnostic workup for clinicians. However, existing studies usually selected informative patches from whole-slide images for the training of the deep learning model, requiring labor-intensive labeling efforts. This work aimed to improve diagnostic accuracy through the statistic features extracted from hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides.
METHODS: We designed a computational pipeline for the diagnosis of inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) of the bladder from its cancer mim

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is a rare and benign epithelial tumor in the sinonasal tract. Recent study suggested the potential role of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of IP. This study aims to compare the inflammatory pattern, the capacity of epithelial cell proliferation and EGFR mutation status of unilateral IP with contralateral polyp tissue.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with unilateral IP and contralateral nasal polyps (NP) were identified through a retrospective chart review. The neutrophil and eosinophil infiltration in IP and NP were assessed by immunostaining f

BACKGROUND: Both the prevalence of sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) and the causal association with alpha-human papillomaviruses (alpha-HPVs) are controversial. In this study we aimed to determine HPV status in histologically selected, microdissected, formalin-fixed, and paraffin-embedded tissue samples of IP.
METHODS: HPV status was assessed retrospectively by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-bead-based multiplex genotyping on tissue samples of patients diagnosed with IP and consecutively treated with endoscopic resection. Forty-one HPV genotypes were considered, distinguishing between high

BACKGROUND: Inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) of the upper urinary tract is an uncommon benign tumour that occasionally presents as a polypoid mass causing urinary obstruction. Histologically, IUP is characterised by a proliferating urothelium arranged in cords and trabeculae, in continuity with overlying intact epithelium, and extending into the lamina propria in a non-invasive, endophytic manner. Cytological atypia is minimal or absent. Top differential diagnoses include urothelial carcinoma with inverted growth pattern and florid ureteritis cystica. Although urothelial carcinomas of the u

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is the most common benign epithelial tumor in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, with a worldwide incidence between 0.6 and 1.5/100 000 persons per year. However, only a few studies have investigated patient-dependent factors related to IP recurrence and persistence. According to available evidence, these factors are still debated, and results are contradictory. In this multicenter retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical records of 130 patients who were surgically treated for sinonasal IP to evaluate the factors affecting recurrence and persistence

To evaluate histopathologic and biologic characteristics in a patient with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) with an endophytic growth pattern similar to that seen in an inverted papilloma. Although the tumor surface was mostly covered with normal-looking urothelium, the covering layer was thicker in parts than in those of benign papillomas. The widths of the trabeculae were irregular, and cytologic atypia with remarkable mitosis was seen. High expression of p53, Ki67, and cytoplasmic cyclin D1 was demonstrated by immunohistochemical staining. To clarify the biologic activities of tumors with

BACKGROUND Nasosinusal papilloma is a benign aggressive tumor. It usually occurs unilaterally in the nasal cavity and can extend to the sinuses. The diagnosis is made by the correlation of findings observed in tomographic and histopathological exams. The recommended treatment is surgical excision with clinical monitoring. Orbital involvement occurs in about 9% of cases of advanced SIP. However, there is no report of cases of a benign tumor that invaded the adjacent soft tissues. Therefore, our objective is to report an unusual case of SIP that bilaterally involved the nasal cavity and maxillar

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic medial maxillectomy is currently the most commonly used endoscopic approach to the maxillary sinus inverting papilloma. The possible complications of this procedure include epiphora, crusting and empty nose syndrome. Another method, a prelacrimal recess approach, enables preservation of the nasolacrimal duct and inferior nasal turbinate, but offers limited possibility of postoperative endoscopic follow-up.
AIM: To evaluate the combined middle and inferior meatus antrostomy approach to treat the maxillary sinus inverting papilloma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospectiv

INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC: Inverted papilloma is a rare condition of the middle ear. In this paper, the authors present a case report of a patient at a Midwestern health system with inverted papilloma. To supplement the case report, a literature review was also performed to identify clinical trends predisposing such cases to recurrence, malignant transformation, and response to radiation. In addition, the authors also propose a surveillance algorithm derived from this case and previously published surveillance strategies.
CASE REPORT: The authors present a rare case of inverted papilloma of t
