Warthin tumor is a well-defined benign salivary gland neoplasm consisting of both epithelial and lymphoid components. The tumor is the second most common benign tumor next to pleomorphic adenoma. We present a case of adenocarcinoma, not otherwise classified, arising in unilateral Warthin tumor of the parotid gland in a 63-year-old male patient. Carcinomas arising in or from the epithelial component of a preexisting parotid Warthin tumor are rare and differential diagnosis of metastasis from an adenocarcinoma in Warthin tumor is important. The patient underwent a complete and thorough work-up,

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland masses encompassing both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions present diagnostic challenges. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is commonly used to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions but has limitations such as variable sensitivity and potential sampling errors. This study assesses FNAC's accuracy for parotid gland lesions, evaluates the Milan Salivary Gland Cytopathology Reporting System (MSRSGC), and compares FNAC results with histopathological findings.
METHODS: This retrospective study at our medical center analyzed data from 2321 patients

Primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland (PMMPG) is an exceptionally rare neoplasm, comprising less than 0.7% of all parotid malignancies and often mistaken for metastatic melanoma. This case presents a 66-year-old man with a painless, slowly enlarging right parotid mass. Imaging revealed a lesion localized to the superficial parotid lobe with FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose)-avid level II lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration suggested melanoma, confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The patient underwent total parotidectomy, neck dissection, adjuvant radiotherapy and immunotherapy with pembrolizuma

Facial nerve monitoring has been increasingly routinely used as an intraoperative adjunctive method to help the head and neck surgeon to identify and minimize facial nerve injury during parotid surgery. The goals, current applications, recent technical advances, and limitations of the method are reviewed. A main focus of this chapter is a review of several prospective clinical trials that have been performed in recent years that have analyzed the benefit of electrophysiological nerve monitoring during parotid surgery. It has been demonstrated that nerve monitoring reduces the risk of early pos

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an exceedingly rare malignant neoplasm. The management of this tumor is fully challenging due to its rarity and lack of documentations. We share a case with primary parotid FDCS. This case report depicts the clinicopathological features of FDCS, which intends to serve as a reference to clinicians in its correct identification.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for 63% of all parotid gland tumors. Most tumors originate in the superficial lobe but, more rarely, these tumors may involve the deep lobe of the parotid gland, growing medially and occupying the parapharyngeal space (PPS). Our case presents a 48-year-old man with an extremely huge recurrent parapharyngeal lesion that bulging in the nasopharynx and the oropharynx and significantly comprised the airways. Surgery was planned to approach the deeper lobe of parotid gland and para-pharyngeal mass by transparotid, transmandi

UNLABELLED: Objective; Neoplasm of accessory parotid glands are very rare, accounting for only 1% to 7.7% of all parotid gland tumors. External appproaches including parotidectomy or facelift incision are the recommended treatment, allowing a good control over the anterior facial nerve's branches and Stensen's duct, but they require a large flap elevation and leave an external scar.
METHODS: We report the case of a 76-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of swelling in the right cheek. The patient underwent ultrasonography, FNAC and MRI which identified a subcutaneous mass over the

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma comprises approximately 10% of all epithelial salivary neoplasms and most frequently involves the parotid. Perineural invasion is a common feature but intraneural invasion and spread is less common.
AIM: The authors report a case of parotid adenoid cystic carcinoma with invasion and spread via the facial nerve with an emphasis on radiologic features.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of a 47-year-old man presenting with a right submandibular mass evolving for 4 years. On physical examination, the mass was firm painless, well delineated. There was no facial pa

AIM: We evaluated the feasibility of perfusion CT (CTP) of the parotid gland and attempted to differentiate benign from malignant tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CTP was performed in 17 patients with benign tumors and 10 patients with malignant parotid tumors. Data were postprocessed by using deconvolution-based perfusion analysis. Postprocessing-generated maps showed blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), mean transit time (MTT), and capillary permeability surface product (PS). Regions of interest were placed through the tumor site and the contralateral healthy parotid tissue. Ratios of the perf

When considering a mandibular osteotomy for access to resect a parapharyngeal neoplasm, the following goals should be considered: preservation of the facial nerve, complete removal of the neoplasm without tumor rupture, maintenance of the preoperative teeth occlusion, acceptable temporomandibular joint function, functional preservation of the inferior alveolar nerve sensation, and satisfying aesthetic results. We propose a modified median osteotomy technique, which combines the advantages of sufficient exposition of the tumor with very good functional and aesthetic results. A case series of ni

Masses near the angle of the mandible containing extracellular matrix or mucin on cytology raise concern for various benign and malignant parotid gland neoplasms. Here a 76-year-old female with a history of cosmetic hyaluronic acid (HA) filler injections presented with a painless 6 mm left sided facial mass. Injection of hyaluronidase into the mass had failed to cause regression, raising concern for a neoplastic process. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) showed amorphous, mucinous/extracellular matrix-like material in a background of numerous histiocytes and occasional multinucleated giant cells, c

OBJECTIVE: Parotid tumors are rare neoplasms in adults but are exceedingly infrequent in adolescents. We aimed to determine the clinical characteristics and outcomes of parotid tumors in adolescents under 20 years old.
METHODS: Between 1999 and 2020, 979 cases of benign parotid tumors and 236 cases of malignant parotid tumors were treated surgically in our department. Of these, 12 benign cases (1.2%) and 9 malignant cases (3.8%) were in adolescents. There were no benign or malignant cases for those aged under 10 years.
RESULTS: Regarding the histological type, all benign tumors were pleomorp

BACKGROUND: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a common diagnostic tool used in the initial evaluation of parotid masses. In the literature, variable diagnostic accuracy of FNA is reported. Therefore, when considering clinical management of these patients, the utility of FNA is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the capability of ultrasound-guided FNA to differentiate between benign and malignant neoplasms. Further, the way in which FNA results affect clinical decision-making was assessed.
METHODS: Retrospective data were collected for all patients who underwent parotidectomy at a l

Mucinous (secretory) myoepithelioma is a very uncommon variant of myoepithelioma characterized by the presence of intracellular mucin. We herein report the findings of a 51-year-old woman who presented with a mass in the right parotid region, which had been slowly growing over the previous year. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a rounded mass with lobulated margins in the tail of the right parotid gland that showed heterogeneous uptake in the anterior margin of the mass. A clinical diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma was made. Superficial parotidectomy revealed a 3.6 cm encapsulated, round-sha

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms of the salivary gland account for 3% of all head and neck tumors; most of these occur in the parotid gland and are benign; 80% of them are pleomorphic adenomas. Benign neoplasms of the salivary gland are rare in children compared with adults. Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is considered the second most frequent neoplasm of all odontogenic tumors after the ameloblastoma. In the present report, we introduce the unusual presentation of a child with a simultaneous pleomorphic adenoma of the right hard palate and a KCOT of the left mandibular angle.
DISCUSSION: The cas

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) is an uncommon but highly aggressive malignancy arising from long-standing pleomorphic adenoma. Malignant transformation typically presents with rapid enlargement, pain, and facial nerve involvement. Metastatic spread is exceptionally rare. We describe a 67-year-old man with a decades-long right parotid mass that underwent malignant change after prior surgical excision confirmed Ca ex PA. After being lost to follow-up, he re-presented with neck stiffness, hearing loss, and facial nerve palsy. Imaging demonstrated a recurrent parotid mass infiltrating

The simultaneous occurrence of benign and malignant tumours in the ipsilateral parotid gland is extremely rare. The cases of five patients with synchronous multiple parotid gland tumours consisting of diverse combinations of benign and malignant histological types are presented here. In addition, all published cases of this entity identified in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases up to January 2018 were reviewed. It is concluded that clinical vigilance should be raised when multifocal tumours are indicated by imaging examinations, in the presence of unmovable, painful, and rapid g

Myoepitheliomas account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and mostly occur in the parotid gland and palate. A 58-year old male patient reported to the Outpatient Department of PMS College of Dental Science and Research (Kerala, India) with a slow growing painless swelling on the palate for 4 years. Pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, cyst adenoma, lipoma, neurofibroma, neurilemmoma and leiomyoma were considered. Histopathology revealed a thinly encapsulated tumor composed mainly of sheets of clear cells mixed with cells having eosinophilic cytoplasm. Histopatho
