Effects of wheat straw particle size as a free-choice provision on growth performance and feeding behaviors of dairy calves.

In the dairy calf feeding, supplementation of forage to the starter feed is commonly practiced. However, data are insufficient about how changes in particle size (PS) of forage affect calf performance and behavior in a free-choice forage provision system. This study aimed to assess the effects of supplementing wheat straw varying in PS on performance, skeletal growth characteristics, ruminal pH, nutritional behaviors, and blood metabolites of dairy calves. Forty-eight Holstein calves (43.8 ± 3.2 kg of BW) from d 15 of age were randomly assigned to one of the four treatments (n = 12/treatment;

Effects of rice straw biochar on sorption and desorption of di-n-butyl phthalate in different soil particle-size fractions.

Sorption of organic contaminants by biochar greatly affects their bioavailability and fate in soils. Nevertheless, very little information is available regarding the effects of biochar on sorption and desorption of organic contaminants in different soil particle-size fractions. In this study, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), a prevalent organic contaminant in agricultural soils, was taken as a model contaminant. The effects of biochar on DBP sorption and desorption in six particle-size fractions (i.e., coarse sand, fine sand, coarse silt, fine silt, clay, and humic acid fractions) of paddy soil wer

Size distributions of fine and ultrafine particles in the city of Strasbourg: correlation between number of particles and concentrations of NO(x) and SO(2) gases and some soluble ions concentration determination.

An Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) was used during spring and autumn 2003 in the centre of Strasbourg for the measurement of atmospheric aerosols size distribution. The concentration of NO(x) and SO(2) in air was simultaneously measured with specific analysers. Samples were collected in the range 0.007-10 microm in equivalent aerodynamic diameter size. Number distributions are representative of a pollution originating from urban traffic with a particle size distribution exhibiting a nucleation mode below 29 nm and an accumulation mode around 80 nm in size. A mean particle density equal

Tattoo Pigment In Situ as a Determinant of Laser Treatment Response: Composition, Particle Size Distribution, Cellular Localisation, and In Situ Transformations.

Introduction: The safety assessment of tattoo removal procedures rests on the assumption that the treatment substrate corresponds to the ink composition declared by the manufacturer. This assumption has rarely been verified. Methods: A structured, comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science using a four-block strategy encompassing ink composition and impurities, particle characteristics, cellular localisation, and in situ transformations. Analytical chemistry studies, tissue imaging, market composition research, and regulatory documen

Influence of Thermal Treatment and Particle Size on the Physicochemical Properties and Filler Performance of Oyster Shell-Derived CaCO3 in Mortar.

The cement industry contributes approximately 7-8% of global CO2 emissions, motivating the development of sustainable supplementary materials. This study evaluates the partial replacement (10 wt.%) of Portland cement with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) derived from oyster shells, both untreated and thermally treated at 600 °C, in non-structural mortar blocks. Structural and physicochemical characterization was performed using XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, and TGA to assess phase composition, morphology, and surface properties. Thermal treatment modified the textural characteristics of CaCO3, reducing the cry

Densification and Mechanical Properties of Monolithic B4C and In-Situ Formed TiB2 Containing B4C-TiB2: Effects of Particle Size and Impurity.

This study investigates the effects of particle size, powder purity, and in situ TiB2 formation on the densification behavior and mechanical properties of B4C-based ceramics fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS). The results demonstrate that particle size is the dominant parameter controlling densification and microstructural evolution. An intermediate particle size (F1200) yields the highest relative density (98.41%) and superior mechanical properties, including a hardness of 33.34 GPa and fracture toughness of 4.63 MPa·m1/2, by providing an optimal balance between diffusion kinetics an

Effects of Particle Size and Oxide Shell Thickness on the Oxidation Characteristics of Core-Shell Aluminum Nanoparticles Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation.

Aluminum nanoparticles (ANPs) possess a core-shell structure, yet the coupled roles of atomic stress and interfacial charge transfer in their slow-heating oxidation remain elusive. This study employs ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the oxidation of six core-shell ANPs with different particle sizes (5-10 nm) and shell thicknesses (0.5-2.0 nm) from 300 K to 1400 K. Results reveal that the stress evolution dictates the oxidation pathway. Thin shells (0.5-1.0 nm) undergo a compressive-to-tensile stress transition, leading to shell rupture at ~1060 K and subsequent outflow and

Influence of dietary energy level and corn particle size on performance, nutrient digestibility, and gut development in broilers fed pelleted diets.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary energy levels and corn particle sizes on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broiler chickens. The energy used in this experiment is based on nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn): low AMEn (2,850 kcal/kg) and high AMEn (3,000 kcal/kg) were paired with three corn particle sizes: 2.5, 5.0, and 8.0 mm. Birds fed low-energy diets had significantly greater feed intake and weight gain (P < 0.01). Coarse particles had the lowest FCR when diets contained high AMEn (P < 0.05), while the lowest FCR in the low AMEn group was

Particle size of insoluble fibres and gelation of soluble fibres influence digesta passage rate throughout the gastrointestinal tract of finishing pigs.

Fibres, as abundant in agricultural by-products, exhibit a large range of physicochemical properties that can influence digestive processes such as digesta mean retention time (MRT), thereby affecting nutrient digestion kinetics. In this study, we investigated the effects of particle size of insoluble fibres, and gelation of soluble fibres on MRT of liquids, fine solids, and fibrous particles in the different segments of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of pigs. Twenty-four boars (51.6 ± 4.90 kg) were allocated to four diets; two diets contained 15% wheat straw, either coarsely chopped or fine

Influence of Particle Size and Xylanase Pretreatment of Proso Millet Bran on Physical, Sensory and Nutritive Features of Gluten-Free Bread.

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Millet bran is a by-product rich in dietary fibre, micronutrients and bioactive compounds which are often deficient in a gluten-free diet. Previously, cryogenic grinding has been shown to improve the functionality of bran to some extent, although it offered limited benefits for bread making. This study aims to investigate the effects of adding proso millet bran depending on its particle size and xylanase pretreatment on the physicochemical, sensory and nutritional properties of gluten-free pan bread. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Coarse bran (d50=223 μm) was ground to medium siz

Effects of soybean meal supplementation on ruminal kinetics of feed particle size reduction and passage in dairy cows fed rice straw.

Six ruminal-cannulated nonlactating Holstein Friesian cows (mean body weight:660 ± 42.9 kg) were used to investigate the effect of soybean meal (SBM) supplementation on voluntary rice straw (RS) intake, feed particle size reduction, and passage kinetics in the rumen. They were allocated to two dietary treatments: RS alone or RS supplemented with SBM. Voluntary dry matter intake of RS and total tract fiber digestibility was increased by SBM supplementation (p < 0.05). Supplementation with SBM decreased rumination time per dietary dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDFom) intake (p < 0

Considerations for Size, Surface Charge, Polymer Degradation, Co-Delivery, and Manufacturability in the Development of Polymeric Particle Vaccines for Infectious Diseases.

Vaccines have advanced human health for centuries. To improve upon the efficacy of subunit vaccines they have been formulated into nano/microparticles for infectious diseases. Much progress in the field of polymeric particles for vaccine formulation has been made since the push for a tetanus vaccine in the 1990s. Modulation of particle properties such as size, surface charge, degradation rate, and the co-delivery of antigen and adjuvant has been used. This review focuses on advances in the understanding of how these properties influence immune responses to injectable polymeric particle vaccine

Comparative study of cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and genotoxicity induced by four typical nanomaterials: the role of particle size, shape and composition.

Although the biological effects of some nanomaterials have already been assessed, information on toxicity and possible mechanisms of various particle types are insufficient. Moreover, the role of particle properties in the toxic reaction remains to be fully understood. In this paper, we aimed to explore the interrelationship between particle size, shape, chemical composition and toxicological effects of four typical nanomaterials with comparable properties: carbon black (CB), single wall carbon nanotube, silicon dioxide (SiO(2)) and zinc dioxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. We investigated the cytotox
