Copper status abnormalities and how to measure them in neurodegenerative disorders.

Copper is essential for life. It plays a pivotal role in the central nervous system, in which a low concentration of copper results in incomplete development, whereas an excess of copper is injurious. Redox reactions are at the basis of copper toxicity: in fact, it catalyses the production of reactive oxygen species in Fenton or Haber-Weiss reactions. Abnormalities of copper homeostasis in neurodegenerative disorders were discovered decades ago. The steady increase in reports from the literature demonstrating copper involvement in neurodegenerative disorders coincides with the improvement, rel

The potential of allergen biochips.

Immediate-type allergies (type I) allergies to environmental allergens such as plant pollen, pet dander, food, honeybees' and wasps' venom affect around a third of the total population in developed countries. The diseases comprise a broad spectrum from rather mild diseases such as hay fever and skin reactions like urticaria to severe ones such as bronchial asthma, vomiting and diarrhea and finally anaphylactic shock. Type I allergies are caused by an errant immune response leading to the production of allergen-specific IgE. The usual algorithm for the diagnosis of type I allergies begins with

Tear flow dynamics in the human nasolacrimal ducts--a pilot study using dynamic magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Jones's theory of tear drainage suggests that the lacrimal sac fills when the eyelids are closed and empties into the nasolacrimal duct when the eyelids are open. This is aided by the contraction of the orbicularis muscle during each blink. This study was undertaken to ascertain the possibility of seeing the dynamic movement of tears in the nasolacrimal system during blinks using magnetic resonance dacryocystography (MR-DCG). METHODS: The sac was initially localized with a three-plane gradient echo sequence using a 1.5-T MRI platform. Fast, dynamic MR-DCG was carried out after we

Assessment of Blockchain Technology in the Improvement of Supply Chain Management in the Pharmaceutical Industry.

Blockchain technology has drawn a lot of interest in the healthcare industry in recent years. Efficient data management is crucial for pharmacies. Blockchain technology is a novel technology that has the potential to make many pharmaceutical processes safer and more transparent. In 2013, the US Congress created the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) to prevent the distribution of stolen, contaminated, or counterfeit drugs. Blockchain technology serves as an answer to this problem as it enables the tracking and tracing the product from manufacturer to patient through an electronic, immutabl

Letter to the editor: heterogeneity in effects of PDA treatment.

The recent meta-analysis by Matsushita et al on "Heterogeneity in treatment response for patent ductus arteriosus" confirms prior results showing that medical treatment of PDA does not reduce but increases mortality. The discussion implies that there is heterogeneity in effects of treatment on mortality, but this is not consistent with the data. The implication of their analysis is that early medical treatment of PDA in preterm infants should be abandoned, as recommended in the recent Clinical Report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

[Government spending on antiretrovirals in Brazil and its main determinants].

The development of public policies for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Brazil is a history of struggle that has united public health officials, researchers and activists since the 1980s. An important part of this journey is linked to the production and distribution of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), initiatives to reduce the price of ARVs and civil society mobilizations to guarantee rights, which have contributed to creating one of the most successful programs to combat the disease in the world. Based on this history, this study aimed to analyze government spending on the acquisition

Impact of COVID-19 on Brain and Psychological Health, its Possible Mechanisms, and Coping Strategies.

COVID-19 pandemic has been depicted to possess a robust association with psychological disorders. SARS-CoV-2 is the most recent virus of the coronavirus family and has the potential to bind the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) receptor. The receptor is mainly present peripherally and to some extent in the brain. Different psychological and neurodegenerative disorders can arise due to the peripheral origin of destruction. These triggers could be inflammatory pathways releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines reaching the brain and causing neuroinflammation. In continuation with traditional viruse
