Hyperglycaemic and hypoglycaemic emergencies among patients with diabetes mellitus who participated in pilgrims of the 2019/1440H Hajj season.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic emergencies are serious acute life-threatening complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). The Hajj season requires the health system in Saudi Arabia to prepare efficiently for the healthcare of millions of pilgrims, particularly for diabetic emergencies. Thus, diabetic emergencies need rapid recognition, diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to explore the frequency and associated factors of diabetic emergencies among the pilgrim's patients with DM during Hajj, Mecca 2019. METHODS: This is a prospective study which was conducted on 153 patients with DM. They were select

Activities and participation after primary total hip arthroplasty; posterolateral versus direct anterior approach in 860 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the past decade, a shift occurred in surgical total hip arthroplasty (THA) approaches to the posterolateral (PLA) and direct anterior approach (DAA). Comparisons of postoperative activities and participation between surgical approaches for THA are sparse. We therefore investigated the association between PLA and DAA for THA regarding the construct "activity and participation" (ICF model) during the first postoperative year. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was an observational cohort study on osteoarthritis patients scheduled for primary THA in 2 hospitals. Questionnaires

Downregulation of lncRNA-PVT1 participates in the development of progressive chronic kidney disease among patients with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a major cause of the development of progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD), while the mechanism is still unknown. LncRNA PVT1 contributes to kidney injury. This study aimed to explore the role of PVT1 in the development of CKD in CHF patients. METHODS: Expression of PVT1 in plasma samples of CHF patients with and without CKD was determined by RT-qPCR. The diagnostic value of plasma PVT1 for CKD was evaluated by ROC curve analysis. The predictive value of PVT1 for the development of CKD in CHF patients was analyzed by a 2-year follow-up study. Ch

Polygenetic Risk Scores for Major Psychiatric Disorders Among Schizophrenia Patients, Their First-Degree Relatives, and Healthy Participants.

BACKGROUND: The genetic etiology of schizophrenia (SCZ) overlaps with that of other major psychiatric disorders in samples of European ancestry. The present study investigated transethnic polygenetic features shared between Japanese SCZ or their unaffected first-degree relatives and European patients with major psychiatric disorders by conducting polygenic risk score (PRS) analyses. METHODS: To calculate PRSs for 5 psychiatric disorders (SCZ, bipolar disorder [BIP], major depressive disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and PRSs differentiating SCZ

The Indian Stroke Scale: Development and validation of a scale to measure participation in daily activities among patients with stroke in India.

BACKGROUND: Prospects of a participation measure to be valid across cultures are debatable. Existing stroke outcome measures had been shown to have limited validity when used within Indian sociocultural contexts. AIM: To develop and validate a patient-reported outcome measure of participation in daily activities appropriate for patients with stroke living in an Indian sociocultural context. METHODS: The scale was developed in two phases: scale development and psychometric testing. Items were derived from a conceptual framework of participation in daily activities of patients who had experien

Dynamic Force Production Capacities Between Coronary Artery Disease Patients vs. Healthy Participants on a Cycle Ergometer.

BACKGROUND: The force-velocity-power (FVP) profile is used to describe dynamic force production capacities, which is of great interest in training high performance athletes. However, FVP may serve a new additional tool for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. The aim of this study was to compare the FVP profile between two populations: CAD patients vs. healthy participants (HP). METHODS: Twenty-four CAD patients (55.8 ± 7.1 y) and 24 HP (52.4 ± 14.8 y) performed two sprints of 8 s on a Monark cycle ergometer with a resistance corresponding to 0.4 N/kg × body

A new parameter to discriminate amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients from healthy participants by motor cortical excitability changes.

INTRODUCTION: We sought a combination of abnormalities to define a more sensitive measure of cortical excitability in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). METHODS: The automatic threshold tracking method was employed to assess the resting motor threshold, intracortical facilitation (ICF), short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), and short-interval intracortical faciilitation (SICF) in patients and controls. RESULTS: SICF at interstimulus intervals (ISI) between 1 and 1.8 ms and 2 and 3 ms as well as average SICI and SICI at ISIs of 1 and 2.5 ms were significantly reduced in ALS. The S

Patient-Reported Outcomes in ATLAS and FLAIR Participants on Long-Acting Regimens of Cabotegravir and Rilpivirine Over 48 Weeks.

The phase 3 ATLAS and FLAIR studies demonstrated that maintenance with Long-Acting (LA) intramuscular cabotegravir and rilpivirine is non-inferior in efficacy to current antiretroviral (CAR) oral therapy. Both studies utilized Patient-Reported Outcome instruments to measure treatment satisfaction (HIVTSQ) and acceptance (ACCEPT general domain), health status (SF-12), injection tolerability/acceptance (PIN), and treatment preference. In pooled analyses, LA-treated patients (n = 591) demonstrated greater mean improvements from baseline than the CAR group (n = 591) in treatment satisfaction (Week

What are research nurses' experiences of obtaining consent from or for patients participating in emergency care research? A qualitative review.

INTRODUCTION: If studies are to be valid, recruitment of representative samples is essential. In 2012, 28% of UK emergency departments met the 80% standard for recruitment to trials set by the National Institute for Health Research. Research nurses play a vital role in the conduct of high-quality research, and it has been argued that dedicated research nurses are needed if clinical trials are to recruit successfully to target. REVIEW QUESTION: What are research nurses' experiences of obtaining consent from or for patients participating in emergency care research? A qualitative evidence review

Financial Incentives to Increase Cardiac Rehabilitation Participation Among Low-Socioeconomic Status Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine the efficacy of financial incentives to increase Medicaid patient participation in and completion of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). BACKGROUND: Participation in CR reduces morbidity, mortality, and hospitalizations while improving quality of life. Lower-socioeconomic status (SES) patients are much less likely to attend and complete CR, despite being at increased risk for recurrent cardiovascular events. METHODS: A total of 130 individuals enrolled in Medicaid with a CR-qualifying cardiac event were randomized 1:1 to receive financial incentives on an es…

Factors influencing participation in a randomized controlled resistance exercise intervention study in breast cancer patients during radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Over the past years knowledge about benefits of physical activity after cancer is evolving from randomized exercise intervention trials. However, it has been argued that results may be biased by selective participation. Therefore, we investigated factors influencing participation in a randomized exercise intervention trial for breast cancer patients. METHODS: Non-metastatic breast cancer patients were systematically screened for a randomized exercise intervention trial on cancer-related fatigue. Participants and nonparticipants were compared concerning sociodemographic characteris

CD161 receptor participates in both impairing NK cell cytotoxicity and the response to glycans and vimentin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

We investigated the role of natural killer (NK) cells and CD161, their primary C-type-lectin-like receptor in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Samples were compared with healthy donors (HD), dermatomyositic (DM), polymyositic (PM), and osteoarthritic (OA) patients. RA, PM, and DM NK cell cytotoxicities significantly decreased relative to the HD and OA NK cells (p<0.0001). These results correlated with an increased expression of NK cell inhibitory receptor CD161, in active disease RA patients. We demonstrated that NK cells are able to respond to mutated citrullinated vimentin (MCV), an RA-specific au

A method for multi-group inter-participant correlation: abnormal synchrony in patients with schizophrenia during auditory target detection.

The general linear model (GLM) approach is the most commonly used method in functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis in predicting a particular response. Recently, a novel method of analysis, referred to as inter-participant correlation (IPC), was developed which attempts to determine the level of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) synchrony among subjects. The IPC approach enables detection of changes in inter-participant BOLD synchrony in a manner that does not rely on an explicit model of the hemodynamic activity. In this paper, we extend IPC to the case of two groups and derive an a

Relatives of psychiatric inpatients--do physical violence and suicide attempts of patients influence family burden and participation in care?

A common concern of psychiatric patients' relatives is that patients might be a danger to themselves or others. The aim of this study was to investigate family burden and relatives' participation in care in relation to physical violence towards others and suicide attempts by psychiatric inpatients before admission. Information concerning violence and suicide attempts by the patients prior to admission was collected from the medical records of 155 acutely voluntarily and involuntarily admitted psychiatric inpatients. Relatives were interviewed a month after admission, using a semi-structured qu
