An inability to perform tasks involving reaching is a common problem for stroke patients. Knowledge of normal muscle activation patterns during these tasks is essential to the identification of abnormal patterns in post-stroke hemiplegia. Findings will provide insight into changes in muscle activation patterns associated with recovery of upper limb function. In this study with neurologically intact participants the co-ordination of shoulder and elbow muscle activity during two dimensional reaching tasks is explored. Eight participants undertook nine tracking tasks in which trajectory (orientat

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the partial or complete absence of pectoral muscles, varying thoracic deformities, and hand anomalies. To date, many variants of this syndrome and its accompanying anomalies have been reported.
METHODS: In our clinic, 113 patients were diagnosed with Poland syndrome between 1990 and 2014. A latissimus dorsi muscle transfer was performed on 6 of these patients.
RESULTS: Out of 113 patients, 63 (55.7%) were diagnosed with the syndrome on the right side, 42 (37.1%) were diagnosed on the left side, and 8 (7%) had a bilater

One of the drawbacks in one-stage reconstruction of the cervical oesophagus and the hypopharynx is the mortality and morbidity of intestinal transposition or free mucosal grafts. The follow up in 19 patients over the last four years showed that the pectoralis major flap is a good alternative for partial reconstructions of the upper gullet, provided that a mucosal strip of 2 cm can be preserved and that secondary shrinkage of the muscle pedicle is allowed for. This means of reconstruction is not ideal for circumferential lesions because of stricture formation and the high risk of fistula format

AIM: The syndrome was first described by Poland in 1841. It classically consists of unilateral muscular and osseous anomalies of the thorax and upper limb with defects of the ipsilateral breast and nipple. We report the value of panoramic-sonography in the diagnosis of this rare condition in three patients.
METHOD: The three girls, all born in 1990, were independently introduced to our unit of children and adolescent gynaecology because of unilateral "developmental defects" of the breasts at the beginning of puberty. To discriminate a Poland-Syndrome from unilateral accentuation of thelarche

Injuries of pectoralis major (PM) muscle are among rare muscle injuries. Due to the lack of experience and knowledge in this field, they are often missed or improperly treated. Most often they are caused by an indirect mechanism, during strength sports, typically using the bench press. In clinical terms, they are typically characterized by specific disorder of the anterior axillary fold and a hematoma and, after subsidence of the swelling, disfiguration with medial retraction of the muscle belly. The most beneficial imaging method to examine these injuries is MRI with an emphasis on a properly

The complex chest wall deformity of Poland's Syndrome may require intervention in early childhood for missing ribs and paradoxical movement of the involved anterior chest with lung herniation. To stabilize the chest wall, we have used autologous rib grafts and prosthetic fabric to replace absent endothoracic fascia. While physiologically sound, this method does nothing for the cosmetic defect which consists of absence of the pectoralis minor and one half to two thirds of the pectoralis major muscles. Silastic implants are not satisfactory in childhood and have complications from recurrent trau

BACKGROUND: In addition to mastectomy, level II and level III axillary node dissection procedures are performed widely in Japan. A randomized clinical trial was performed to determine which procedure was more effective.
METHODS: One group of women had resection of the pectoralis minor muscle and dissection of level I, II and III axillary lymph nodes (level III dissection). In a second group, the pectoralis minor muscle was left intact and level III axillary lymph node dissection was not performed (level II dissection). A total of 1209 women with stage II breast cancer were enrolled in the stu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of upper limb dysfunction (ULD) and subtypes after breast cancer surgery and to identify factors associated with late ULD.
METHODS: Among 191 enrolled patients, 191 were evaluated at 3 months, 187 at 6 months, and 183 at 12 months after surgery. Pain, shoulder range of motion, muscle strength, and arm circumference were assessed. Based on symptoms and physical examinations, the types of ULD common after breast cancer treatment were diagnosed and categorized.
RESULTS: The prevalence of ULD after surgery were 24.6%, 20.9%, and 26.8% at 3

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is characterized by pain and limited range of motion, caused by stiffness of the joint capsule and coracohumeral ligament. On the other hand, there have been few reports on muscle stiffness in AC. The purpose of this study was to assess muscle stiffness in patients of AC with a portable and noninvasive device, Myoton PRO. We hypothesized that muscle stiffness around shoulder joint increases in AC.
METHODS: At first, we surveyed correlation between Myoton PRO and shear wave elastography with phantoms. Second, reproducibility and repeatability of healthy vol

We are reporting here a rare case of congenital complete sternal cleft in an adult of 25 years of age, with absent anterior pericardium and "diastasis recti." Successful surgical repair was achieved along with the preservation of the already existing anatomic and mechanical sanctity of thoracic cage, sternal reconstruction, and protection of the underlying heart and great vessels with a good cosmetic result using autogenous tissue i.e., iliac bone and "V-Y" myoplasty of pectoralis major muscles with their functional preservation and correction of associated anomalies.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome after subcoracoid pectoralis major transfer for anterior-superior shoulder instability in massive rotator cuff insufficiency. Fourteen patients underwent subcoracoid pectoralis major transfer for this debilitating surgical complication. At a mean 17.5-month follow-up, there were 11 satisfactory and 3 unsatisfactory results. Nine of the patients were satisfied with the procedure and would repeat the operation under similar circumstances. Pain scores, as measured on a visual analog scale, decreased from 6.9 to 3.2 postoperatively. Mean forwar

An uncommon and often-overlooked anatomic variation of the latissimus dorsi muscle is the axillary arch. It is formed by an anomalous slip of the muscle that arises from the body of the latissimus dorsi but then inserts along with the pectoralis major muscle anterior to the axillary vein and neurovascular bundle. If an axillary arch is encountered during axillary lymphadenectomy, the lymph nodes posterior and lateral to the arch should be excised. Experience with a number of cases is used to consider local therapeutic and staging factors.

Most muscle trauma more commonly involves the lower extremity, but injury to the chest wall, particularly the pectoralis major, is well recognized. Trauma to the upper limb muscle-tendon unit is preserved. Development of complications from muscle injury is also discussed. This article systematically reviews the clinical features, pathogenesis, imaging findings, and management for upper limb and chest wall muscle injuries. Imaging modalities focus on magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages in specific situations.

INTRODUCTION: The anterior compartment of the arm consists of three muscles: the biceps brachii (BB), brachialis, and coracobrachialis muscle. The aim of the present study was to characterize possible variations in the supernumerary heads of the biceps brachii and use these to prepare an accurate classification of the area that could be used for planning surgical procedures in the region. Material and Methods. One hundred (51 left and 49 right, 52 females and 48 males) upper limbs fixed in 10% formalin solution were examined.
RESULTS: Four types of supernumerary BB heads were identified, with

Ruptures of the pectoralis major (PM) tendon are rare but have increased in recent years, especially during fitness exercising, such as bench pressing. The pathomechanism is an eccentric load under pretension of the PM (falling onto the outstretched arm, injuries during ground combat, boxing and during downward movement when bench pressing). The rupture sequence starts from superior to inferior at the insertion site with initial rupture of the most inferior muscle parts, followed by the sternal part and the clavicular part. Most classifications are based on rupture location, extent and time of
